Formed the folk group The Highwaymen in 1958. Had a #1 hit with the Civil War-era African-American spiritual "Michael (Row the Boat Ashore)" in 1961. The song was previously recorded by Bob Gibson, and later recorded by Harry Belafonte, Trini López, and Pete Seeger.
