DVD Review: "The Old Dark House" (1963) Starring Tom Poston, Robert Morley And Janette Scott

By Lee Pfeiffer

Sony has released the 1963 remake of the 1932 James Whale horror film The Old Dark House as a burn-to-order DVD. The difference between the versions is supposedly night and day (I haven't seen the original). The remake is a broad, comedic take on the horror genre that keeps only the basic premise of the story, which was based on a novel by J.B. Priestly. Tom Poston, in a rare leading role, plays Tom Pendrel, an American living in London where he works as a car dealer. His flatmate Caspar Femm (Peter Bull) is a strange man who he hardly ever sees. Nevertheless, Caspar induces Tom to deliver his new car to the family's estate in the British countryside. When Tom arrives, he finds Caspar dead, supposedly from an accidental fall. He's already laid out in his coffin in a parlor. Tom then finds himself among a strange group of other Femms, »

Stephen Moyer: 'We're thinking about a True Blood scene where all the vampires go to a tanning booth…'

The TV vampire on his wife and co-star Anna Paquin, his fan Barack Obama and the joys of an Essex spray-tan

Where are you and what are you doing?

I'm in Venice Beach, California, looking out at a grey day. There are good waves out there but it's too cold to go into the water, even for an Essex boy. My 12-year-old son's been over for the Easter holidays and we did that classic British seaside thing of running in, screaming like wusses and running straight back out again.

The fourth series of True Blood sees your character Bill Compton become king of the vampires. What are the perks?

He gets access to the best blood in Louisiana. All the haemophiliacs step forward and offer themselves. As king, Bill also inherits a cellar full of quality blood, passed down the generations like vintage wine. I love that idea.

Cinema Retro Goes Underground To Cover Hammer Horror Screenings In London

Normal 0 false false false En-gb X-none X-none

Cinema Retro is always on the lookout for classic and cult movies being screened in unique ways by film clubs and societies. We seem to have found one that could really top them all- literally at a dead end!

I learned about The Flicker Club via the B-Movie Podcast (www.bmoviecast.com) recently and I was intrigued. This February they ran a short season of Hammer Films. Nothing exceptional about that, you may say, bar the fact that they have screened rarities such as The Reptile, The Witches and the obscure The Lost Continent. If that wasn’t enough, in conjunction with Hammer, they screened the newly restored Dracula from 1958 with found footage that was missing for decades.. However- wonderful though this is - it is the location and the way in which the Flicker Club screened these gems that elevates them beyond the norm. »

The Skins gang return in style on Monday 23rd January at 10pm on E4,  burning their way through a holiday in Morocco.

But what begins as a hedonistic fortnight before their return to college turns into a living hell. By the time they return to Bristol everything has changed.

Friendships fall apart whilst complicated and toxic relationships begin. And there are strangers in the mix who could either save or destroy them...

Franky (Dakota Blue Richards) goes through a sexual awakening that unleashes a wild and unpredictable side to her when she meets Luke (Joe Cole).

In Franky's wake trails Matty (Sebastian De Souza), deeply in love and about to get himself into even deeper trouble. Meanwhile Nick (Sean Teale) slowly begins to realise just what his brother sees in Franky.
