He is the son of Kay Fanning (born Katherine Woodruff) and Marshall Field IV. His father owned the Chicago Sun-Times, from 1956 to 1965. His mother was editor and publisher of the Anchorage Daily News and editor of the Christian Science Monitor.
Formed two production companies, Interscope Communications in 1982, and Radar Pictures in 2001.
