Witherspoon’s ‘Wild’ Released Into Specialty Theaters This Weekend

4 December 2014 4:26 PM, PST | Deadline New York | See recent Deadline New York news »

Following the success of last year’s Dallas Buyers Club, director Jean-Marc Vallée returns with another high profile title and a big Hollywood star that should easily be this week’s Specialty Box Office go-getter, Wild. Starring Reese Witherspoon, who also produces with Bruna Papandrea under their Pacific Standard label, the Fox Searchlight title will open in a comparatively wider release by this weekend (it opened in NY and La Wednesday) than some of its more recent high-profile brethren including last week’s The Imitation Game or last month’s Foxcatcher. Liv Ullmann returns to the director’s chair after a long absence with her take on Strindberg’s Miss Julie with Jessica Chastain, Collin Farrell and Samantha Morton via Wrekin Hill Entertainment. IFC Films and Magnolia Pictures will each open features Comet and Life Partners respectively which have at their center two people in an intense relationship. And two »

Life Partners Review

16 November 2014 8:56 PM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Movies about friendships being tested by new romantic interests are nothing new, but Life Partners just about manages not to let that familiarity grate. Credit writer-director Susanna Fogel and her co-writer Joni Lefkowitz, who punch up a rather commonplace premise with honest scripting and a warm sense of humor. Their unidealized depiction of the relationship between long-time friends Sasha (Leighton Meester) and Paige (Gillian Jacobs), is interesting to watch, and that realism also helps Life Partners to navigate some trickier, though no less conventional, narrative territory in its latter half.

In terms of plot, what’s on offer is undeniably standard. Sasha and Paige are close friends of the nail-painting, bed-sharing variety, who have their relationship altered and in some ways threatened by Paige’s blossoming romance with Tim (Adam Brody), a badly dressed but incessantly charming guy who quickly wins Paige over. As much as they have in common, »

‘Life Partners’ charmingly explores the balance of a proven friendship

Life Partners

Starring: Leighton Meester, Gillian Jacobs, Adam Brody, Gabourey Sidibe, Beth Dover, Mark Feuerstein, Kate McKinnon, Abby Elliott, Greer Grammer, Elizabeth Ho

Directed by: Susanna Fogel

USA, 2014

Long-term friendships are probably the most treasured definition of a kind of ideal relationship that an individual could ever develop in their lives. This is certainly so for late twenty-somethings Sasha and Paige, the perky protagonists in director Susanna Fogel’s spry, down-to-earth dramedy Life Partners. Charming, quirky and breezily spirited, Fogel presents a chippy but honest character study of female empowerment that is certainly infectious and relatable. Life Partners is a precise look at the subtle anxieties of growing up and possibly growing apart relating to contemporary womanhood.

Fogel establishes a clear cut blueprint for long-time best buddies Sasha (Leighton Meester) and Paige (Gillian Jacobs) whose closeness and continued bonding are puzzling given the fact that they are opposite souls with different philosophies on life. »
