Vittorio Storaro and Screenwriter Barry Morrow to be Feted by Italy’s Ischia Global Fest

Rome — Italian cinematographer Vittorio Storaro and American screenwriter-turned-director Barry Morrow (“Rain Man”) will be feted by Italy’s Ischia Global Film and Music Fest.

Morrow will be making the trek to the Italian island off the coast of Naples to present the festival premiere of his directorial debut “Smitten!,” an Italy-set romcom based on his own script. It stars “Glee” actor Darren Criss as an American fashion exec who gets kidnapped and taken to the Alps.

Also set for Ischia’s 14th edition, which runs from July 10 to 17, is the first screening in Italy of Iranian director Majid Majidi’s lavish epic “Muhammad: The Messenger of God,” about the birth of Islam. Storaro worked as cinematographer on this film for three years. Considered the Islamic Republic’s most expensive production ever, “Muhammad” was released last year in Iran but has not traveled much outside its home country. Fellini’s City of Women

30 May 2016 5:08 PM, PDT | Trailers from Hell | See recent Trailers from Hell news »

That naughty boy Federico Fellini goes all out with this essay-hallucination about women, a surreal odyssey that hurls Marcello Mastroianni into a world in which women are no longer putting up with male nonsense. It's an honest (if still somewhat sexist) effort by an artist acknowledging illusions and pleasures that he knows are infantile. City of Women Blu-ray Cohen Media Group 1980 / Color / 1:85 widescreen / 139 min. / La cittá delle donne / Street Date May 31, 2016 / 39.98 Starring Marcello Mastroianni, Anna Prucnal, Bernice Stegers, Iole Silvani, Donatella Damiani, Ettore Manni, Fiammetta Baralla, Catherine Carrel, Rose Alba. Academy Awards Film Series: Scorsese's Spielbergian Biopic Comes Crashing Down Each Time After Take-Off

19 March 2016 9:35 PM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

'The Aviator' movie with Leonardo DiCaprio as bizarre billionaire Howard Hughes: Bloated biopic. 'The Aviator' movie review: What's not good for the Spruce Goose… Imagine Citizen Kane directed by the Steven Spielberg of The Color Purple, Schindler's List, Amistad, and Saving Private Ryan. The final result would look something like a Barry Levinson film – for instance, the superficial and phony Bugsy. Or, an even more appropriate example, the superficial, phony, and bloated The Aviator. Except, of course, that Levinson is not the man responsible for the 2004 mega-production starring Leonardo DiCaprio as the eccentric, billionaire ladies' man Howard Hughes. Strangely enough, that man is Martin Scorsese, the director of hard-hitting films such as Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, and Gangs of New York. Scorsese, a fan of Old Hollywood, apparently wanted to have some fun with the reported $110 million budget (approx. $138 million in 2016) made available to him. The director no doubt had a ball while making The Aviator, »
