Rebecca Ferguson to Star in Biopic ‘The Lady and the Panda’

Rebecca Ferguson will star as Ruth Harkness in the historical adventure “The Lady and the Panda.”

Filming is expected to begin next month in China in the Sichuan region in the foothills of the Himalayas. The Exchange is launching sales at the American Film Market next month.

“The Lady and the Panda” is a U.K./Chinese co-production, produced by Laura Bickford (“Traffic,” “Beasts of No Nation”) and Michelle Qi, CEO of Europe China Picture Group. The executive producers are Joe Simpson of Miscellaneous Entertainment, Andrew Mann, and Fiona Druckenmiller (“Beasts of No Nation”).

Harkness was the first person to bring a live panda from China to the United States. She was a New York socialite whose wealthy explorer husband died unexpectedly in 1936. She took over his expedition to China, joined forces with Chinese guide Quentin Young, and traveled into the uncharted Himalayas, where, against all odds, they rescued an orphaned baby panda. »

Rebecca Ferguson Joins Hugh Jackman’s ‘Greatest Showman’ (Exclusive)

Rebecca Ferguson has been cast opposite Hugh Jackman in Fox’s P.T. Barnum musical biopic “The Greatest Showman” as Swedish opera singer Jenny Lind.

She joins Zac Efron, Michelle Williams and Zendaya on the project. Michael Gracey is directing from a script by Michael Arndt.

Chernin Entertainment and Laurence Mark are producing. Production is set to begin in the fall.

Justin Paul and Benj Pasek, who were Tony-nominated for “The Christmas Story,” are writing original songs for the film. Kira Goldberg is overseeing the project for Fox.

The project has been in development since 2009 with Jackman attached to play the showman, who rose from humble roots and was able to hoax a gullible public, as he created the three-ring Barnum & Bailey Circus that made him famous. Barnum gained fame as a 19th century impresario with tours of Tom Thumb and Lind; he began calling it the “Greatest Show on Earth »

Rebecca Ferguson to Star in Skydance’s Sci-fi Pic ‘Life’ (Exclusive)

Rebecca Ferguson is set to star in the Skydance sci-fi pic “Life,” sources tell Variety.

Daniel Espinosa is directing the film with David Ellison and Dana Goldberg producing along with Bonnie Curtis and Julie Lynn. The project, an original idea, has a script written by “Deadpool” duo Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese.

Story follows the crew of the International Space Station, who, after retrieving a sample from Mars, discover that it displays signs of life, and proves to be more intelligent than expected.

Ferguson has become an in-demand actress in Hollywood following her break-out in Skydance’s “Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation” where she beat out a slew of actresses for the role of Isla Faust.
