The Hunger Games Box Office: All-Time Top Twenty? Think Again

Chimpanzee movie Zac Efron/The Lucky One Box Office: $25 Million? At no. 3 this weekend behind Think Like a Man and The Lucky One, Gary Ross' The Hunger Games is expected to collect about $13 million. Its Friday take was $4 million according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Liam Hemsworth star. The Hunger Games' domestic cume stands at an estimated $346.4 million, which means the dystopic adventure drama is now the no. 20 movie ever at the domestic box office. That is, if you live on a planet where little things called "inflation" and "IMAX surcharges" don't exist. On Box Office Mojo's all-time box-office chart, The Hunger Games currently finds itself sandwiched between Michael Bay's Transformers: Dark of the Moon's $352 million and Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers' $342 million. Zac Efron/The Lucky One Box Office: Overperforming

21 April 2012 1:52 AM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Zac Efron, The Lucky One Box Office: Think Like A Man Beats The Lucky One At no. 2 this weekend, The Lucky One is expected to take in $25 million (up from an estimated $22 million a few hours ago) after collecting $8.8 million at 3,115 sites (about 1,000 more than Think Like a Man) on Friday according to estimates found at Deadline.com. Taylor Schilling, probably best known as the leading lady in the nearly universally panned film adaptation of Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged: Part 1, plays Zac Efron's love interest in this nearly universally panned adaptation of Nicholas Sparks' romantic novel. (This may sound bad for Schilling, but it's not. The Lucky One was a smart, high-profile career move following the Atlas Shrugged critical and box-office disaster.) The Lucky One has a mere 16% approval rating among Rotten Tomatoes' top critics — Think Like a Man is an instant classic by comparison. Yet, even after adjusting for inflation, »

"The Hunger Games" is the first movie since "Avatar" to top the box office for four weekends in a row.

The adaptation of the popular young adult novel fended off competition from the Farrelly brothers' "The Three Stooges," the positively reviewed "Cabin in the Woods" and sci-fi indie "Lockout" over the weekend, collecting another $21.5 million in North American theaters for an estimated domestic gross of $337.1 million.

"Games" is expected to take in at least $370 million domestically and has already earned more than $500 million worldwide, even as director Gary Ross announced he will not return for the follow-up, "Catching Fire," which is set to reunite Jennifer Lawrence and company next year.

Box Office: Lockout Bombs, Mirror Mirror Resilient

Maggie Grace, Guy Pearce, Lockout Box Office: Peter Farrelly / Bobby Farrelly's The Three Stooges, Drew Goddard / Chris Hemsworth's The Cabin In The Woods Disappoint Tarsem Singh's Mirror Mirror has proven itself more resilient than expected. Down 37%, the comedy fantasy grossed $7 million at no. 6, for a total of $49.96 million in North America according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. Needless to say, Mirror Mirror will pass the $50 million mark at the domestic box office on Monday. Julia Roberts, Lily Collins, and Armie Hammer star. Box Office: The Three Stooges/The Cabin In The Woods Disappoint

The Three Stooges: Will Sasso (Curly), Chris Diamantopoulos (Moe), Sean Hayes (Larry) Gary Ross / Jennifer Lawrence / Josh Hutcherson / Liam Hemsworth's The Hunger Games Box Office: First Since Titanic with Key Female Role, Staying Power At no. 2, Bobby Farrelly and Peter Farrelly's The Three Stooges scored a somewhat disappointing $17.1 million at 3,477 North American sites for a so-so $4,918 per-theater average according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. Overseas prospects aren't exactly the greatest either, but considering that the 20th Century Fox-distributed comedy was budgeted at a relatively modest $30 million, the Farrellys' film should end up in the black after ancillary revenues are tallied. The Three Stooges features Chris Diamantopoulos (Moe), Sean Hayes (Larry), Will Sasso (Curly), Jane Lynch, Sofia Vergara, and Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson (Dreamgirls). Reviews have been mediocre; the film has a 46% approval rating among Rotten Tomatoes' top critics. At no. 3, Drew Goddard's The Cabin in the Woods »

'Dumb and Dumber 2' to take place 18 years after first film

15 April 2012 12:43 PM, PDT | digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Dumb and Dumber 2 will take place in the present day, co-director Peter Farrelly has confirmed. The upcoming sequel to the 1994 comedy starring Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels will take place over a decade after the original, rather than continuing where it last left off. "It picks up today. It's 17 or 18 years later. It's not like a month after that happened. It's today. And we explain what they've been doing all those years," Farrelly told The Huffington Post. However, he was unable to give any concrete plot details, saying: "I'm sorry to say, that's top secret." Farrelly added that he has yet to see the poorly-received prequel Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd, but that he has no hard feelings towards the film's makers. "You know, I (more) »

The Three Stooges Movie Review

Title: The Three Stooges Directors: Bobby and Peter Farrelly Starring: Sean Hayes, Will Sasso (TV’s ‘Family Guy’), Chris Diamantopoulos (TV’s ’24′), Sophia Vergera and Jane Lynch Adapting a beloved comedy act from the mid-20th century into a modern-day feature film can put pressure on even the most experienced comedy screenwriters and directors, including acclaimed filmmakers Bobby and Peter Farrelly. While the two writers-directors seem like the perfect duo to script and helm the contemporary film adaptation of ‘The Three Stooges,’ their modernization of the comedy group unfortunately failed to capture the true essence of the popular act. The Farrellys had a commendable idea in bringing ‘The Three Stooges’ to a  [ Read More ] »

Review: The Three Stooges

14 April 2012 8:30 AM, PDT | Slackerwood | See recent Slackerwood news »

There's a lot you can say about Bobby and Peter Farrelly, aka the Farrelly brothers. Among all of the things you can say about them, one thing you certainly can't say is that their movies are lazy. Though their last few films have lacked in quality, they have been full on heart and and they've certainly stuck to the formula that gave them some early success. It's a shame that early success hasn't been more consistent as of late and their homage to some classic comedians, The Three Stooges fits more along their mold as of late than it does their earlier films.

It opens with a flashback, the way a lot of Farrelly brothers films do, at an orphanage run by nuns. There are children happily playing until Sister Mary-Mengele (played amazingly by Larry David) ruins their song-and-dance routine. What seems like a normal day is disrupted by a »

[Review] The Three Stooges

13 April 2012 5:00 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

The passion that Bob and Peter Farrelly have for The Three Stooges is undeniable. For the past decade they’ve gone through many possible incarnations of this update in order to give the iconic trio their due respect. The duo deserve applause for their commitment to bring the Stooges to a 21st Century audience, who may not be as familiar with Moe, Curly, and Larry. But it is unfortunate this love letter of a final product does not match their dedication.

Broken into three stories, working independently but structurally tied together, we get the same old Moe (Chris Diamantopoulos), Curly (Will Sasso), and Larry (Sean Hayes), lovable and violent goofballs. Even at a young age which we see them at, they fit everything we know about the characters. These are not actors making impersonations, but embodiments, with perfect casting on the Farrelly’s part.

Looking Back: The Farrelly Brothers Used to Make Funny Comedies?

13 April 2012 3:31 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

With a stretch of movies starting with Osmosis Jones in 2001, all the way to Hall Pass just last year, the recent "comedies" of brothers Peter & Bobby Farrelly between there have included Shallow Hal, Stuck on You, Fever Pitch and The Heartbreak Kid. It's not exactly an Uwe Boll worthy line-up of films, but these are easily some of the worst comedies of their given years of release. Taking that into account, you'd think the Farrelly Brothers were just hacks who can't seem to do anything but inexplicably fit Richard Jenkins into most of their films. But there was a time when the sibling duo actually used to make very funny movies. In "honor" of The Three Stooges, which currently sits with a low 43% on Rotten Tomatoes, I'd like to look back at the 8-year run of four films that gave Bobby and Peter Farrelly the career that they »

Review: ‘The Three Stooges’ Features Fantastic Impersonations, Misplaced Bathroom Humor, Troglodyte Guidos and Very Few Laughs

13 April 2012 3:00 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

With imitation being the sincerest form of flattery, the original Three Stooges would be most flattered (if they were still alive, of course) by the new Farrelly Brothers‘ film The Three Stooges. They could also very well be turning over in their graves. Even Joe Besser and Curly Joe DeRita might be saddened a bit by this flick, and those two guys were saddled with trying to fill the shoes of the original Curly and his follow-up Shemp. It’s not that The Three Stooges is a terrible film. It’s just unnecessary. Like an extended Saturday Night Live sketch that wears on too long, this movie offers little more than a showcase of Sean Hayes, Will Sasso and Chris Diamantopoulos doing solid impersonations of the original Larry, Curly and Moe. Sorry, Bobby and Peter Farrelly, but that’s not enough to make a good movie. What was originally rumored to be a serious look at the »

'Cabin In The Woods', 'Three Stooges', And More: Double Feature Friday!

13 April 2012 2:02 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

"The Cabin in the Woods" almost defeats the purpose of the Double Feature Friday this week, since the only sensible thing to do is see it twice. But if you are interested in catching some non-"Cabin" movies this week, here are some recommendations to keep you busy.

But seriously, see "The Cabin in the Woods."

"The Cabin in the Woods" & "Zoolander"

This one is tricky. Like all other situations when discussing "Cabin in the Woods," I really have to measure my words here. There is one joke in "Cabin" that is set up and pays off particularly brilliantly. It has something vaguely to do "Zoolander." I won't say how and spoil the fun, but if you see "Cabin" this weekend, you'll know what I'm talking about. The real point is "See the movie." It doesn't matter what you watch before or after. See "Cabin in the Woods," and then see it again. »

Screen Rant’s Kofi Outlaw Reviews The Three Stooges

In their homage to the classic Three Stooges comedic trio, directors Bobby and Peter Farrelly (Dumb and Dumber) transport bumbling oafs Larry, Curly and their leader Moe into modern times as three strange-looking babes abandoned on the doorstep of an orphanage. For an emotional core, we’re treated to a setup in which a young Moe is nearly adopted by a caring couple – only to be traded for another boy when he insists that his Stooge brothers also be brought along for the good life.

From there the story breaks into three interlocking vignettes presented as individual Three Stooges episodes, in which Moe, Larry and Curly – now ...

Running Time: 1 hr 32 mins

Rating: PG

Release Date: April 13, 2013

Who’S It For? Have you been dying to see what the original Stooges would be like in today’s movie world? Get in line. Kids who enjoy physical fake pain will probably have fun as well.

Overall

On Friday the 13th, it felt like The Three Stooges was going to be some horrific, cruel joke on audiences. After all, the Farrelly brothers haven’t made a truly funny, buzz worthy film since 1998. Not only that, Sean Hayes is the biggest named Stooge. In the film critic community, thinking about sitting through The Three Stooges was »
