There’s some good news and some bad news when it comes to Dan Ewen’s spec script Dear Satan. The first bit of good news is that it’s an original idea that sounds funny. The second bit is that its originality has been rightly rewarded by one of the big studios, as 20th Century Fox just bought it with intentions of putting it into development. Variety broke the story, and says that the script was inspired by a child the screenwriter was babysitting making a crucial misspelling when addressing her yearly letter to Santa Claus. Ewen says of the experience, “There was this cute little card, covered in candy canes and glitter. I fell in love with the idea of this note mistakenly being delivered to the Prince of Darkness and the fiery wackiness that would ensue.” In his script said wackiness actually does ensue, as Satan receives the letter by mistake and ends up »

Peter and Bobby Farrelly have just brought The Three Stooges back to the big screen (though we have to wait until August for that to hit the UK) and for a possible follow-up, they’re looking at getting in touch with the devil. Okay, so they’re not really penning a missive to the big kahuna of Hell, but they are interested in a new comedy script called Dear Satan. Dan Ewen has written the spec screenplay, which finds a 7-year-old girl accidentally misspelling Santa on her Christmas letter. So instead of a jolly, red-bellied old fellow bringing her a toy, the job ends up falling to Satan himself. While it sounds like it draws from The Nightmare Before Christmas in terms of the concept, the idea actually sprang from Ewen’s time spent babysitting, and one of his charges making a slight mistake on a Christmas wish list. "There was this cute little card, »

Peter and Bobby Farrelly have their sights set on a holiday-themed comedy with a twist. Variety reports that the sibling pair are planning on developing Dear Satan from screenwriter Dan Ewen. The plot of Satan involves a 7-year-old girl who, in an attempt to send Santa a Christmas letter, accidentally misspells his name and winds up inviting Satan to her holidays. The brothers most recently directed The Three Stooges for 20th Century Fox, where Satan is also set up. Their next film, set to shoot later this year, is the much-anticipated sequel, Dumb and Dumber 2 . »

Chimpanzee movie Zac Efron/The Lucky One Box Office: $25 Million? Its Friday take was $4 million according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Liam Hemsworth star. The Hunger Games' domestic cume stands at an estimated $346.4 million, which means the dystopic adventure drama is now the no. 20 movie ever at the domestic box office. That is, if you live on a planet where little things called "inflation" and "IMAX surcharges" don't exist. Zac Efron, The Lucky One Box Office: Think Like A Man Beats The Lucky One At no. 2 this weekend, The Lucky One is expected to take in $25 million (up from an estimated $22 million a few hours ago) after collecting $8.8 million at 3,115 sites (about 1,000 more than Think Like a Man) on Friday according to estimates found at Deadline.com. Taylor Schilling, probably best known as the leading lady in the nearly universally panned film adaptation of Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged: Part 1, plays Zac Efron's love interest in this nearly universally panned adaptation of Nicholas Sparks' romantic novel. (This may sound bad for Schilling, but it's not. The Lucky One was a smart, high-profile career move following the Atlas Shrugged critical and box-office disaster.) The Lucky One has a mere 16% approval rating among Rotten Tomatoes' top critics — Think Like a Man is an instant classic by comparison. Yet, even after adjusting for inflation, »

Starring Zac Efron, Taylor Schilling, Blythe Danner
Directed by Peter and Bobby Farrelly
Rated PG-13
I have to start by saying it's strange going to see a movie expecting one thing and being completely surprised by another. I'm not a big fan of romantic movies, but Nicholas Sparks is a decent storyteller, so I gave it a shot. And while I wasn't too impressed with the romance aspect of the film, there were some very enjoyable light hearted moments in The Lucky One that not only made the film bearable for me, but made me wish the entire film was focused around moments like these.

Movie fans have chosen real violence over the slapstick variety as The Hunger Games held off The Three Stooges to remain the number one weekend movie.
Lionsgate's The Hunger Games, the blockbuster about teens competing in a televised fight to the death, stayed on top for a fourth-straight weekend with $21.5 million. That raises the film's domestic total to $337.1 million.
"I think a couple of weeks ago, if someone had told us where we'd be, we would have said, 'We'd like to see that number, but it would be a pleasant surprise.' So we're in that pleasant surprise spot at this point," said Richie Fay, head of distribution for Lionsgate.
Peter and Bobby Farrelly's slapstick update The Three Stooges opened in second-place with $17.1 million, according to studio estimates. »

J Hoberman hasn't even broken his stride since the Village Voice let him go back in January. Not only does he carry on reviewing films week in and week out, only now at Artinfo, he's also turned in several amazing long-form pieces — on, for example, Geoff Dyer's Zona (and by extension, Tarkovsky's Stalker) in the New York Times (where Manohla Dargis and Ao Scott have asked him about the current state of film culture), on Terence Davies for the New York Review of Books and, in yesterday's Los Angeles Times, on Oliver Stone's Wall Street, which turns 25 this year: "Gordon Gekko, portrayed with vulpine, Oscar-winning gusto by Michael Douglas, has added a remarkably durable archetype to American mythology — the personification of capital." Watch Hoberman then segue into Mitt Romney via Karl Marx.
The other Marx is name-checked in another new piece, this one for Tablet, on the Jewishness of the original Three Stooges, »

Supermodel Kate Upton shoves her sexy curves into a bikini for a living, but her appearance dressed as a nun in a tiny swimsuit for "The Three Stooges" has some very upset. The criticism comes from one of the nun characters portrayed by the 19-year old swimsuit model and Seinfeld co-creator Larry David. Upton’s character wears a nun-bikini, while David’s character Sister Mary-Mengele is named after Nazi “Angel of Death” Josef Mengele. The full text of Catholic League president Bill Donohue’s complaint is below: In the 1950s, Hollywood generally avoided crude fare and was respectful of religion. Today it specializes in crudity and trashes Christianity, especially Catholicism. Enter the “The Three Stooges.” This movie is not just another remake: it is a cultural marker of sociological significance, and what it says about the way we’ve changed is not encouraging. The Three Stooges: Will Sasso (Curly), Chris Diamantopoulos (Moe), Sean Hayes (Larry) Gary Ross / Jennifer Lawrence / Josh Hutcherson / Liam Hemsworth's The Hunger Games Box Office: First Since Titanic with Key Female Role, Staying Power At no. 2, Bobby Farrelly and Peter Farrelly's The Three Stooges scored a somewhat disappointing $17.1 million at 3,477 North American sites for a so-so $4,918 per-theater average according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. Overseas prospects aren't exactly the greatest either, but considering that the 20th Century Fox-distributed comedy was budgeted at a relatively modest $30 million, the Farrellys' film should end up in the black after ancillary revenues are tallied. The Three Stooges features Chris Diamantopoulos (Moe), Sean Hayes (Larry), Will Sasso (Curly), Jane Lynch, Sofia Vergara, and Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson (Dreamgirls). The Hunger Games cannot be stopped. Director Gary Ross’s adaptation of the popular Suzanne Collins book took the top spot at the box office for the fourth weekend in a row with $21.5 million, bringing its domestic total to $337 million with a worldwide haul over $479 million. Though Lionsgate is presumably extremely happy with The Hunger Games’ performance, they’re currently on the lookout for a director replacement for the sequel Catching Fire after Ross declined to return due to the tight schedule. They have to start filming the follow-up this August in order for star Jennifer Lawrence to be wrapped in time to move on to the X-Men: First Class sequel in January, and to make Catching Fire’s November 2013 release date.
