Paul Giamatti has dismissed rumours he's set to replace Sean Penn in upcoming comedy The Three Stooges after he was tipped for the role by co-director Bobby Farrelly himself.
Oscar winner Penn quit the project last week (begs15Jun09), in addition to forthcoming drama Cartel, after announcing he was taking a break from his movie career to spend more time with his family and work on his troubled marriage to actress Robin Wright Penn.
Giamatti emerged the favourite to step into the role of Larry Fine alongside Benicio Del Toro and Jim Carrey, after Farrelly admitted the actor would make a "sensational Larry".
However, Bobby's brother Peter Farrelly confessed they'd already offered the part to another star - although he refused to reveal any names.
The Sideways star's representative has also denied Giamatti will be signing on to the movie project, telling E! News columnist Marc Malkin there have been no talks between the two parties.

Apparently, after Sean Penn dropped out of The Three Stooges movie (as Larry Fine opposite Benicio Del Toro and Jim Carrey), Paul Giamatti might be the actor to take his place. When asked about it, director Bobby Farrelly mused that Giamatti would be a "sensational Larry". Sean Penn is one of my favorite actors so it's tough to say that anyone will be able to successfully fill his shoes. That said, Paul Giamatti has a kind, wise face and that makes me feel more comfortable. Does...

Last week Sean Penn announced that he would be backing out of the Farrelly Brothers comedy The Three Stooges and another project to deal with family issues. So who will replace Penn as Larry in redo of the famous comedy trio? How about Paul Giamatti? Over the weekend, The Boston Herald suggested that Giamatti would be good for the part, and Bobby Farrelly admitted to the paper that Giamatti would not only be "a sensational Larry," but they'd "love to have Paul." Unfortunately "an offer" has already been sent out "to someone else." But that doesn't mean that Giamatti is a shoe in for their second choice. The actor, who was also in town at the Nantucket Film Festival with his comedy Cold Souls, didn't seem too responsive to the idea. "They were always so dark and grim. And Moe was this ancient man with a little boy’s haircut.

Sean Penn is taking a break from Hollywood to focus on his family, the upshot being that he has backed out of both The Three Stooges and Cartel.
Peter and Bobby Farrelly (Dumb & Dumber) have spent the better part of a decade trying to get Stooges off the ground, and in March they were able to cast Penn as Larry, with Jim Carrey as Curly and Benicio del Toro as Moe.
Meanwhile, MGM and the Farrellys, who wrote the script and are set to direct, need to decide whether they will wait for Penn or seek to find a new actor.
Time and availability remain the primary issues: Stooges was eyeing a late August start date, and MGM has slotted it for a 2010 release. If the studio does wait, it could risk losing Carrey and del Toro. On the other hand, many actors are vying to replace Penn.

Sean Penn has made the decision to take a year off from acting to focus on his family. Because of this, he has withdrawn from two projects he committed to following his Oscar win for Milk. First was the action thriller, Cartel. The movie would have seen the Oscar winner as a dad who goes to Mexico to protect his son from the drug cartel that killed his wife. Asper Leth is directing the Universal/Imagine film, which will begin filming in the fall as long as the studio is able to strike a deal with one of the actors on their list who might replace Penn. Second is the Farrelly Brothers’ The Three Stooges film. Peter and Bobby Farrelly are currently reviewing their short list to refill the role of Larry. The Farrellys’ list includes Paul Giamatti, Simon Pegg, Zach Galifanakis, and Larry David to join Jim Carrey as

Variety reports that Sean Penn announced he will pull out of two projects for unspecified personal reasons related to family.
Penn will no longer star in Peter Farrelly and Bobby Farrelly's The Three Stooges, in which he was to play Larry opposite Jim Carrey as Curly and Benicio Del Toro as Moe. He also withdrew from Cartel. In the Asger Leth-directed drama, scripted by Peter Craig, a man struggles to protect his son after his wife is killed in the world of Mexican drug cartels.
It is unclear how long Penn will be on hiatus. Prior to the announcement, he had already completed two other projects, which should still see release. The first is Fair Game, the Doug Liman-directed biopic based on the memoir of CIA agent Valerie Plame (with Naomi Watts in the starring role). The other is The Tree of Life, which stars Brad Pitt

"Milk" actor Sean Penn has pulled out of his two forthcoming movie projects, "Cartel" and "The Three Stooges". The 48-year-old star cited personal reasons as the causes for his exit, Universal Pictures and MGM have announced.
With Penn leaving "Cartel", Universal Pictures are now scheduled to recast his role. Additionally, the studio have put together a list of potential actors to replace Penn and hope to find the right actor in early date in the fall.
As for "Three Stooges", it's still unclear whether MGM will recast a new actor to play Larry, to which Penn supposedly attached, or wait for him to return to work. Penn originally was set to star alongside Jim Carrey who has been picked up to play Curly and Benicio Del Toro who is tapped to portray Moe in the movie from directors Peter and Bobby Farrelly.

The movie would have seen the two-time Oscar winner play a dad who travels to Mexico to protect his son from the gangsters who killed his wife. Two-time Oscar-winning actor-writer-director Sean Penn has dropped out of MGM's Three Stooges film, which the Farrelly brothers are directing, as well as Universal and Imagine's crime thriller Cartel. According to the trades, Penn is taking a leave from his Hollywood career to focus on his family. Penn has already informed the productions he will not be available. It's unclear how long the absence could last, though sources have said up to a year. In Stooges, Penn was set to play Larry with Jim Carrey cast as Curly and Benicio del Toro as Moe. Two major studio films are now without a two-time Oscar-winning actor. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sean Penn will not be appearing in two major films he signed on for, The Three Stooges and Cartel.
It was said that the actor, who picked up his second Oscar for his leading performance in Milk, is taking time off from his career to focus on his family. It was said that the break could be longer than a year, and Penn has already informed the two productions of his decision.
The Cartel production is said to move on without Penn and recast the role, as there has been no start date planned, but The Three Stooges is left with a bit of a bind. An August start-date has already been slotted by MGM, with a 2010 release date set and Jim Carrey and Benecio del Toro have signed on has Curly and Moe,

Sean Penn is in talks to star in This Must Be the Place, a film that will mark the English-language feature debut of Italian filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino, say the trades. The script was co-written by Sorrentino and Umberto Contarello. The deal is still being finalized, but Penn would play a wealthy rock star who becomes bored in his retirement and takes on the quest of finding his father’s executioner, an ex-Nazi war criminal who is a refugee in the U.S. Penn and Sorrentino have made the commitment to work together on the project, pending the completion of his previous film commitments that include The Three Stooges, the MGM comedy to be directed by Peter and Bobby Farrelly and star Penn, Jim Carrey and Benicio Del Toro; Universal/Imagine drama Cartel, to be helmed by Asger Leth; and Fair Game, the Doug Liman-directed drama about outed CIA agent Valerie Plame.

In easily the weirdest news of the week, MGM and the Farrelly brothers are piecing together their cast for their upcoming comedy, the beleaguered and seemingly stasis, The Three Stooges. The odd part? Jim Carrey, Sean Penn and Benicio Del Toro are in talks to portray the 1930s iconic comedy troupe.
The Three Stooges was originally set up with original Stooge shorts producer Columbia, until rights holder C3 Entertainment Inc. sold the film rights to Warner Bros. for the Farrelly brothers to direct in 2001. MGM later obtained the rights along with the Farrelly's services.
The Farrelly's script, which Bobby Farrelly referred to as "Dumb, Dumber & Dumbest", was originally plotted out as a series of four shorts. The story was eventually changed to a full-length feature.

Directors Peter Farrelly and Bobby Farrelly finally found a home for their Three Stooges movie at MGM last year, and it looks like they have finally put together a surprising cast for the movie..
Variety reports that Jim Carrey will play heavier Stooge Curly, and will gain 40 pounds for the role. With Carrey's history in comedies, this isn't as surprising as the next two choices: Academy Award winners Sean Penn as Larry and Benicio Del Toro as Moe.
While neither Penn or Del Toro are strangers to comedies, Penn played the iconoclastic surfer Jeff Spicoli in Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Del Toro has made subtle comic turns in both The Usual Suspects and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, however, they are hardly two names that typically come to mind when thinking of the slapstick comedy of The Three Stooges.
The Stooges movie is not a biopic but a complete remake,

Moe, Larry and Curly are almost complete. MGM and the Farrelly brothers are negotiating with Jim Carrey and Benicio Del Toro to join Sean Penn for the slapstick trio.
The studio has already set Penn to play Larry. They are also zeroing in on Carrey to play Curly and Del Toro to play Moe to complete the set.
Variety also reports that Carrey is already making plans to gain 40 pounds to be at par with Curly's rotund physique.
The slapstick comedy will center around the antics of the trio - Moe Howard, Larry Fine and Curly Howard - in the Columbia Pictures shorts during the 1930s and '40s. Comedy team, Peter and Bobby Farrelly ("My, Myself and Irene," "Shallow Hal," and "There's Something About Mary"), wrote the script and are producing with their Conundrum partner Bradley Thomas and Charlie Wessler.

Well, it’s official. After a casting process so long and involved that we heard the BBC were in talks to turn it into a 10-part series with Graham Norton hosting, the Farrelly Brothers have finally, finally, finally found their Three Stooges: Jim Carrey, Sean Penn and Benicio Del Toro.Let’s put it another way: Jim Carrey, two-time Oscar winner Sean Penn, and Oscar winner, Benicio Del Toro will be playing, respectively, Curly, Larry and Moe in the Farrellys’ revamp of the much-loved Stooges franchise.Wow. Just… wow. That was not what we were expecting. But we have to say, paraphrasing Danny DeVito in another Carrey flick, Man On The Moon, that the casting choices may be insane… but they might also be brilliant.Consider the evidence: Carrey, of course, has worked with Peter and Bobby Farrelly before, on their wonderful debut, Dumb & Dumber, and the much-maligned, although often hilarious,

MGM and the Farrelly brothers are getting closer to getting a cast for the upcoming "The Three Stooges" film. The studio has set Sean Penn to play Larry, and negotiations are underway with Jim Carrey to play Curly, with the actor already making plans to gain 40 pounds to approximate the physical dimensions of Jerome "Curly" Howard. The studio is zeroing in on Benicio Del Toro to play Moe. The film is not a biopic, but rather a comedy built around the antics of the three characters that Moe Howard, Larry Fine and Howard played. Originally constructed as four separate shorts, the feature screenplay has since been streamlined into a single narrative. Included in the story line is an opening that shows the Stooges as kids in an orphanage, a device that will require some "Benjamin Button"-style visual trickery to place the adult actors' heads on child actors' bodies.
