‘The Conjuring’ Series, Spinoffs Top $1 Billion at Worldwide Box Office

18 August 2017 4:32 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

New Line’s four-film “Conjuring” series has scared up more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office, thanks to “Annabelle: Creation” taking in more than $110 million.

The low-cost franchise launched in 2013 with “The Conjuring,” starring Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson as paranormal investigators, and was spun off with 2014’s demonic doll “Annabelle,” followed by the 2016 sequel “The Conjuring 2” and this summer’s sequel “Annabelle: Creation.”

James Wan and Peter Safran have produced all four films and Wan directed both “Conjuring” movies. New Line will release another spinoff, “The Nun,” in July. The studio is also in active development with Wan’s Atomic Monster and the Safran Company on “The Conjuring 3” and another spinoff, “The Crooked Man,” based on a character that appeared in “The Conjuring 2.”

Godzilla: King of the Monsters director teases connection to original 1954 Godzilla

17 August 2017 12:49 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

As production continues on Godzilla: King of the Monsters, director Michael Dougherty has taken to Twitter to share the following image, which features an interesting connection with Toho’s original 1954 movie…

Godzilla fans will recognise the above as the Oxygen Destroyer, a weapon designed by Dr. Serizawa which is used to kill the King of the Monsters in the original film.

Now, this doesn’t necessarily mean that Dougherty is teasing the death of Godzilla: it’s possible that the Oxygen Destroyer could be used against one of the other kaiju in the film, or perhaps even a hint towards the creation of Destoroyah, the main antagonist in 1995’s Godzilla vs. Destoroyah.

Box Office Democracy: Annabelle: Creation

16 August 2017 7:30 AM, PDT | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

There’s a part of me that can’t help but admire the whole Conjuring franchise.  They have their main series movies directed by James Wan and starring Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, huge stars for mid-budget horror movies, and then in the off-years they can make these spin-off movies like the Annabelle movies or the two forthcoming spin-offs from The Conjuring 2 and just harvest money from their big ideas using lower budgets and less-known talent.  It’s brilliant.  It doesn’t make for a particularly good movie in this case, but I can’t knock the hustle.

Annabelle: Creation is supposed to be a prequel to explain the origins of the haunted doll from The Conjuring.  Interestingly, three years ago they released Annabelle which was also an attempt to tell the origin of the same haunted doll and it started with the titular doll being a mundane non-evil object. »

Why ‘The Conjuring’ Could Become the Biggest Horror Franchise of the Century

14 August 2017 1:04 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Four movies in — with at least three more on deck — and the burgeoning The Conjuring Universe is continuing to scare up big box office bucks with no sign of slowing down. Even during the downturned, dog days of summer, the latest film in the franchise, prequel-to-a-sequel “Annabelle: Creation,” topped out as the weekend’s biggest winner, pulling in over $35 million in domestic returns and handily dispatching with its nearest competition (“Dunkirk,” now in its fourth week, made just $11.4 million to take second place). The 21st century has already played home to one of the genre’s biggest hit franchises ever and has steadily rolled out new offerings that seem destined to inspire their own series but, for now, “The Conjuring” is king. And it won’t stop until it becomes the biggest horror franchise of the century.

The franchise has some stiff competition, including the “Paranormal Activity” films ($401.4 million) and »

First Godzilla 2 Photo Teases Major Connection to 1954 Original

14 August 2017 11:28 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Director Michael Dougherty (Krampus) is hard at work on Godzilla 2 right now, which is currently slated for release on March 22, 2019. The movie is going to do a lot for hardcore fans of the franchise by bringing on some classic kaiju from the history of the series with Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah joining up with the King of the Monsters. Now, Dougherty has revealed a new set photo that appears to be teasing a major connection to the original 1954 Godzilla movie.

Michael Dougherty recently took to Twitter in order to post a photo from the set of Godzilla 2 that doesn't feature any monsters in it, but is definitely a (potentially) big deal. Those who have seen the original Godzilla will likely recognize the weapon depicted in the photo as the Oxygen Destroyer, a weapon that removes oxygen from whatever body of water it is placed in and was used to »

The Real Annabelle Is Actually a Raggedy Ann Doll - and It's Terrifying

10 August 2017 3:54 PM, PDT | POPSUGAR | See recent BuzzSugar news »

Image Source: Flickr user volvob12b This Friday marks the release of Annabelle: Creation, which is the second Annabelle movie and, technically, the fourth movie that traces back to famed paranormal researchers Ed and Lorraine Warren. In its Hollywood context, the Annabelle doll first appears in 2013's The Conjuring (but, sadly, not in The Conjuring 2) as a pretty gnarly little object with some quite impressive drag queen eyebrows. What you might not know is that the doll has been totally creeped up for the big screen, and, in actuality, is just a vintage Raggedy Ann doll. Believe what you will, but the real-life Ed and Lorraine Warren have a full account of Annabelle on their official website. Ahead of Annabelle: Creation, we're presenting the highlights of the haunting tale. 1. The Beginning According to the Warrens, the story of the Annabelle doll began in 1970 when a woman purchased an antique »

Annabelle: Creation is almost upon us, and for those of you venturing out to catch David F. Sandberg’s horror prequel on the silver screen, keep your peepers peeled for an exclusive 4-minute preview of It.

It is, in essence, a timely primer designed to drum up excitement for the movie’s release in September. As for Creation, New Line and Warner Bros.’ spinoff is all set to become the next chapter in the ever-growing Conjuring universe, and while taking a short breather from Aquaman, executive producer James Wan turned in a status report to Entertainment Weekly about The Conjuring 3 and its upcoming offshoot, The Crooked Man.

First up, the latter; when discussing The Conjuring universe and its many spinoffs (The Nun is another property simmering in development), Wan stressed that each new instalment will have “a very different flavor.”

Warner Bros. Orchestrates Kaiju Destruction In First Set Pics For Godzilla: King Of The Monsters

Filming is now underway on the Atlanta set of Godzilla: King Of The Monsters, and the first behind-the-scenes stills have surfaced online to prove it.

First spotted by Facebook fan page Gormaru Island (via Screen Rant), the photos themselves are fairly nondescript in that they only spotlight various nighttime shots, controlled explosions, and a handful of camera operators and other members of the crew. Bear in mind that this is a CG-heavy blockbuster, and considering that King of the Monsters only began filming in mid-June, it’ll be some time yet before we catch a glimpse of Gojira’s new nemeses: Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah.

Nevertheless, eagle-eyed readers may be able to glean some additional tidbits from the set photos below, which appear to showcase either the aftermath of a Kaiju attack, one in which the humans go up against those God-sized monsters, or some form of monstrous brawl »

Spooky International Poster For Annabelle: Creation Looms Onto The Interwebs

29 June 2017 10:02 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

In two months’ time, Warner Bros. and New Line will peel back the curtain on their latest installment in the ever-evolving Conjuring universe. Its name? Annabelle: Creation, a horror sequel coming by way of David F. Sandberg.

If that name rings a bell, it should; following up on a string of no-budget shorts, two years ago Sandberg delivered a cracking feature film debut in the form of Lights Out, and the picture proved so successful – so downright terrifying – that the filmmaker was quickly drafted into the Conjuring universe.

It’s fast becoming one of the biggest horror franchises in Hollywood, too, what with plans in place for multiple spinoffs (see: The Nun and The Crooked Man) along with a third Conjuring film to be written by franchise veteran David Leslie Johnson. Director James Wan is yet to sign on for the threequel, though if Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson have their way, »
