PBS and CBS led the winners at the 36th annual News and Documentary Awards, held Monday night at Lincoln Center’s David Geffen Hall. But lifetime achievement honoree Ted Turner stole the show with an emotional acceptance speech that recounted his “firing” in 2001 from the company he founded.

“I got phased out,” the CNN founder told the crowd. The management of Time Warner, which acquired Turner Broadcasting in 1996, came to him as his contract was about to end.

‘Frontline’ Looks to the Future: Q&A With Executive Producer Raney Aronson-Rath

28 September 2015 8:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Frontline” begins its 33rd year on Tuesday with a first for PBS’ venerable long-form documentary series. “My Brother’s Bomber,” a search in Libya for those responsible for the 1988 Pan Am Flight 103 bombing over Lockerbie, Scotland, will air in three hour-long installments over the next three weeks.

The expansion into multi-part series is one of many new moves — from experiments with virtual reality to stepped up production of digital content — undertaken by “Frontline” executive producer Raney Aronson-Rath, who has taken the reins of the series this season from her mentor, founding exec producer David Fanning. Aronson-Rath, who joined “Frontline” as a senior producer in 2007, sat down with Variety earlier this month in New York to discuss “Frontline’s” evolution.

From public radio’s “Serial” to HBO’s “The Jinx,” documentary filmmaking is in the midst of a boom and big changes. What prompted you to produce “My Brother’s Bomber” as a multi-part series? »

The hunt was sparked after the only person convicted of the crime, Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, was released from a Scottish jail in 2009. (He died three years later in Libya.)

Aronson, who took the reins of “Frontline” from founding exec producer David Fanning in May, said the Boston-based operation has several large-scale investigations in the works that will be presented as multi-part series in the coming years. She said it was »
