Emmy spotlight: Will ‘The Alienist’ repeat the success of Cary Joji Fukunaga’s last murder mystery ‘True Detective’?

TNT’s “The Alienist” follows the investigation into a series of grisly murders that haunt a team of investigators. In that sense it’s not unlike HBO’s anthology “True Detective.” The first season of that drama won 5 Emmys out of 12 nominations in 2014, including one for Cary Joji Fukunaga‘s direction. Now Fukunaga is an executive producer and writer for “The Alienist,” so will he return to the Emmy race? If so he’ll be migrating to new categories: his season of “True Detective” was entered as a drama at the Emmys, but “The Alienist” is expected to compete as a limited series.

Apart from Fukunaga’s participation and similarities in tone, “The Alienist” is a quite different series, but it might appeal to many of the same television academy members who voted for “True Detective” or other crime series like “Boardwalk Empire” and “The Night Of.” Where season one

‘The Alienist’ Shocker: Kreizler’s Team Falls Victim to a Terrible TV Trope

‘The Alienist’ Shocker: Kreizler’s Team Falls Victim to a Terrible TV Trope
[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “The Alienist” episode “Psychopathia Sexualis.”]

Well, that was disappointing.

The Alienist” has made an effort to present more progressive viewpoints in its story, overlaying this modern mindset onto the Victorian-era murder mystery. Issues about class, gender, race, and more have been explored in such a way that feels as natural to question now as they might have been during the turn of the century. That’s why it’s frustrating that one key element of Caleb Carr’s original novel didn’t get a similar update.

At the end of Monday’s episode, “Psychopathia Sexualis,” the former Captain Connor (David Wilmot) and a couple of his thugs are sent by NYPD Chief Byrnes (Ted Levine) to make sure that alienist Dr. Laszlo Kreizler doesn’t solve the boy prostitute murders before the cops do. That would be embarrassing, not to mention undermine the people’s faith in the boys in blue.

‘The Alienist’ Humbles Its Hero to Tackle Issues of Class, Privilege, and Systemic Oppression
[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “The Alienist” episode “Many Sainted Men.”]

Set in 1896, TNT’s “The Alienist” hasn’t just been invested in the central mystery of a serial killer preying on boy prostitutes, but also in exploring how society is on the brink of change during the turn of the century. Advances in criminal profiling, forensics, and other police work have been the focus as the killer is sought, but plenty of other social issues have been raised as well.

‘The Alienist’ Team Got Blindsided but Their Issues Investigating Go Far Deeper

‘The Alienist’ Team Got Blindsided but Their Issues Investigating Go Far Deeper
[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “The Alienist” episode “Ascension.”]

The killer of young boys on “The Alienist” is still at large because it turns out that even the police were wrong about his identity. It seemed that privileged pedophile Willem Van Bergen (Josef Altin) was to blame for the mutilation deaths of multiple boy prostitutes — and even IndieWire applauded the move to reveal his identity so early on — but that ended up being a false, albeit intriguing, lead.

On Monday’s episode, titled “Ascension,” the former Captain Connor (David Wilmot) was still stung after being dismissed from his post by Theodore Roosevelt (Brian Gehraghty) for hoodwinking the commissioner as to Van Bergen’s whereabouts. Connor then took it upon himself to track down the miscreant, shot him dead, and then sloppily disposed of the body. But while this act may have rid New York of one child predator, it did not eliminate the actual serial

If you are a fan of Steven Soderbergh's Ocean's trilogy, you might be happy to hear that Ocean's 8 is going to have more cameos from those original films than we thought. We already knew that Matt Damon was going to show up in the film, but in a recent interview with The Toronto Sun, the actor reveals that there are a few others who will pop up. He says:

"It's just a very small cameo. I'm not really in the movie a lot. ... I think there are a few of us who pop up really quickly."

I just assumed that George Clooney would be back as Danny Ocean considering the movie revolves around his sister. He's also producing the film. However, it would be fun to see Brad Pitt as Rusty, Carl Reiner as Saul Bloom, Don Cheadle as Basher, and the rest of the crew.

Ocean's 8 looks
