Bode Miller, the U.S. Olympic skier, dedicated his bronze medal win over the weekend in the men’s super-g at the Sochi 2014 Games to his late brother Chelone Miller. After the race, NBC’s Christin Cooper's series of questions regarding “Chilly” caused the Olympian to break down into tears.
Bode Miller Cries In Post-Race Interview
At 36-years-old, Miller became the oldest Alpine Olympic medalist in history. It wasn’t that fact that Cooper wanted to discuss, however. She wanted Miller to talk about the loss of his brother in April 2013, and how that impacted his performance on the slopes. After a couple of leading questions, Miller admitted that this Olympics – and this medal – meant something more to him due to his brother’s unexpected passing.
“This was a little different. You know with my brother passing away, I really wanted to come back here and race the way he sensed it,...

One of these things is not like the others: Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, Clint Eastwood and Mitt Romney all took the stage yesterday for the final night of the Republican National Convention in Tampa. It was billed as Romney’s prime-time introduction to America. Unfortunately for the Republicans, the buzziest moment wasn’t Romney’s big speech (or the genuinely moving video of his relationship with wife Ann). It was “surprise guest” Clint Eastwood, whose rambling, seemingly improvised remarks was easily the most memorable moment of the night. Speaking to an empty chair where an “invisible Obama” was sitting, Eastwood riffed on attorneys,...

'Oh Canada,' begins the national anthem of the friendly neighbor to our North, but last night we watched the underdogs of ice hockey, the Americans, beat the Great White North kings of the rink. Not since the 1980 Miracle on Ice, where team captain Mike Eruzione, the Winthrop Massachusetts kid, along with the late coach Herb Brooks, led the Americans in a stunning defeat over the other kings of the ice rink, Russia. This defeat knocked the breath out of the sports world, as it did the confident Russians who were leveled that a team of mostly amateur kids could best their behemoths. How wonderful it was to see the United States men's hockey teamed trounce Canada...

Miracle is an important film to me. Not being much of a sports fan, sports movies have to have some kind of personal importance, grounding them in human drama or a stronger significance for them to resonate very strongly with me. Miracle has that in spades. It epitomizes the American spirit and not just that the 1980 Olympics were important, but why they were; why we needed, as a nation and a society, to have something spectacular happen. Being born well after all this took place, I would never presume to understand the magnificence of the story like those whose lives it directly affected. That said, the true brilliance of the film comes from how it can make people who know nothing about hockey or the history behind the 1980 games get behind the characters, the struggle, and the beauty of the event. I’m not going to analyze the film; it...
