Son of stage players Isabel Waldron (1871-1950) and Edward Emery (d. 1938).
Character actor and one-time romantic lead, on the Broadway stage from 1925. Often played immaculately dapper, urbane gentlemen, invariably a likeable rogue, villain (Here Comes Mr. Jordan (1941)) or red herring (as in Spellbound (1945). Known to science fiction fans as the expedition leader, Dr. Karl Eckstrom, of Rocketship X-M (1950).
Was good friends with Zachary Scott. Once saved Scott's life after a boating accident.
From 1961 to 1964, Emery was romantically involved with actress Joan Bennett, who cared for him to the end of during his final illness.
