Woody Harrelson Deserves No Sympathy In New Extended Clip From Corrupt Cop Drama Rampart

16 December 2011 10:00 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

For Rampart, writer-director Oren Moverman has reteamed with Woody Harrelson and Ben Foster, the stars of his Oscar-nominated debut, The Messenger, and he’s made what I think is the best cop crime drama since L.A. Confidential. I got to see the film at its UK premiere at the BFI London Film Festival back in October, and I absolutely loved it; it deserved every one of the 5 stars I gave it in my review (which you can read here).

Since then, we’ve seen the release of the film’s terrific first poster, along with an immense first trailer that really whets the appetite – and makes me want to see it again so much – and ComingSoon.net have now got a great new extended clip to share with us from the film.

Co-written by James Ellroy, often heralded as one of the greatest crime novelists in America, Rampart is »

We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.

Few genres have stood the test of time quite like the mystery. From the early days of literature, the concept of intrigue and the unknowable has piqued the interest of men and women alike.

Even one of the most famed detectives of literature, Sherlock Holmes, has graduated from the written word to the silver screen. In honor of Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy we’re counting down the Top 7 most memorable crime-solving movies.

7. Seven (1995)

Recap: A rookie detective (Brad Pitt) and an aging detective close to retirement (Morgan freeman) team up to take down a brutal serial killer who is killing in the fashion of the seven deadly sins.

Reason: Anybody who’s actually seen this movie knows why this one makes the cut. Pun absolutely intended. I just have four words for you… “What’s in the box? »

‘Rampart’ Trailer & Clips: Woody Harrelson Is A Really Bad Cop

14 December 2011 8:42 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Two-time Oscar nominee Woody Harrelson has never been wary of tackling controversial roles, with a resume that includes memorable turns as a psychopathic serial killer (Natural Born Killers), “Hustler” founder Larry Flynt (The People vs. Larry Flynt), a drag queen (Anger Management), a costumed vigilante (Defendor), and an officer who spends his days meeting the families of recently-deceased soldiers (The Messenger), among many others.

Harrelson has been earning a good deal of buzz during the early stages of the 2011 Oscar season for his performance in Rampart, a “dirty cop” drama that reunites the actor with his Messenger director, Oren Moverman, and features a script co-penned by James Ellroy, a celebrated crime drama author/screenwriter whose credits include the original L.A. Confidential novel and the movie Street Kings.

Here is the plot setup for Rampart:

Interview: "Rampart"'s Ben Foster. He's Dying for a Musical Comedy

27 November 2011 9:47 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Ben Foster photographed at Sundance in January.Ben Foster doesn't like to talk about himself.  This becomes clear immediately after we've begun talking about Ben Foster, though he won't admit it until we're wrapping up.

"Press is very difficult for me," He explains fifteen into our conversation. Some actors do like talking about themselves, I remind him, amiably. "That must be nice for them," Foster quips back sarcastically. On the subject of Rampart and its leading man Woody Harrelson, though, he is much more effusive. "It's so easy to talk about him." the actor says with relief, combining his roles as co-star, friend and first time producer.

"I'm absolutely amazed by the work he did," he offers when the subject of Woody's acclaimed and Oscar buzzing performance as a corrupt cop pops up. "He dropped 30 lbs, he was living the cop lifestyle, he disappeared on set - it was disturbing »

Oren Moverman's "Rampart"

27 November 2011 3:01 AM, PST | MUBI | See recent MUBI news »

"Based on their family histories, Woody Harrelson and James Ellroy were careening race-cars destined to collide," suggests Time's Richard Corliss. "Harrelson's father Charles was convicted of the 1979 murder of a federal judge on a contract from a drug dealer. Occasionally boasting that he killed John F Kennedy, Charles died in a supermax prison cell in Colorado four years ago. Ellroy's mother Jean was found strangled and dumped by a roadside in 1958. Her son, 10 at the time, believed the crime went unsolved because of police apathy in investigating it. That haunting suspicion propelled him into writing novels about cops and killers, including La Confidential, The Black Dahlia and American Tabloid (which climaxes in the Kennedy assassination), and a 1996 book, My Dark Places, that attempted to find the identity of his mother's murderer. So Harrelson's starring role as a wayward cop in Oren Moverman's Rampart, co-written by Ellroy from his story, »

'Rampart' Review (2011)

22 November 2011 8:29 PM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

With Rampart, director Oren Moverman has created what is essentially an art house version of Training Day as he explores one man's descent into Hell. With famed crime novelist James Ellroy, Moverman co-wrote the script and has re-teamed with Woody Harrelson, the Oscar-nominated star of his last film The Messenger, who plays Dave Brown, a chain-smoking renegade cop and member of the Los Angeles Police Department circa 1999. Despite my anticipation, the film was in no way what I expected as Moverman follows Brown's path from on the edge police officer to an unrecognizable street demon to the point he leaves him to wander the streets of L.A. alone.

A Vietnam veteran and a lifelong dirty cop, Dave is referred to as "Date Rape" Dave, a moniker he earned several years ago after killing a serial date rapist without cause. Now, amidst the late-1990s Rampart scandal, Dave represents the last of a dying breed. »

‘Rampart’: aiming more for a sunshine coast ‘The Wire’ than a nervous ‘Lethal Weapon’

Rampart

Directed by Oren Moverman

Written by James Ellroy and Oren Moverman

Starring Woody Harrelson, Cynthia Nixon, Robin Wright, Sigourney Weaver, Anne Heche & Steve Buscemi

Two years ago debut director Oren Moverman directed Woody Harrelson to his second Oscar nomination with The Messenger, an under-seen and unappreciated home-front military drama, with next years Rampart, an La bad-cop drama he may have just provided his muse with a sweltering part that could embezzle the coveted gold statuette come next February. Pilfered from the mind of La crime savant James Ellroy we’re billy-clubbed into a blistering Los Angeles, circa 1999, and the Rampart division of the City of Angels black and whites are embroiled in a tornado of controversy, following allegations of widespread corruption, witness beatings, suspect kickbacks and violent apprehensions. "Woody Harrelson is the most corrupt cop you've ever seen on screen." That statement, brought to us by the new poster and trailer for Rampart, is one helluva way to grab your attention. Immense First Trailer Arrives For Corrupt Cop Drama Rampart With Woody Harrelson

21 November 2011 11:00 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Oscar-nominated writer-director Oren Moverman’s return to the director’s chair for his second film, Rampart, is absolutely brilliant. I was lucky enough to catch the film at the London Film Festival back in October and thought it was utterly flawless.

The film sees Moverman collaborating once more with the stars of his first film, The Messenger, Woody Harrelson and Ben Foster, having co-written the script with none other than James Ellroy, heralded as one of America’s finest crime novelists, writer of the original L.A. Confidential book upon which the 1997 film is based.

Apple have now put out an immense first trailer for Rampart, and it gives a brilliant glimpse at Harrelson’s tour de force performance throughout.

Rampart Trailer Starring Woody Harrelson

21 November 2011 10:41 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

I didn't hear all that much about Rampart when it premiered at Tiff earlier this year, but it has since been picked up by Millennium Entertainment and has started being promoted as a potential Oscar contender. Directed by Oren Moverman (The Messenger), the movie stars Woody Harrelson as "the most corrupt cop you've ever seen on screen." I'm not sure if that quote actually comes from a critic's review or if Millennium just came up with it themselves, but it's certainly attention grabbing and more than a little ballsy. Especially considering that Millennium also released Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans just a couple of years ago. I liked Moverman's first film The Messenger quite a bit and also thought Woody Harrelson was good in it, but he was sort of overshadowed by Ben Foster. This time around Harrelson is clearly the star of the show, although Ben Foster »

O'er the 'Rampart' We Gallantly Stream Woody Harrelson's Trailer

18 November 2011 2:33 PM, PST | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

The brand new trailer for Woody Harrelson's "Rampart" has just arrived and it promises that he will be "the most corrupt cop you've ever seen on screen."

But is that a good thing?

So far, critics seem to think so, as Harrelson has already been earning some Oscar buzz for his portrayal of Los Angeles police office Dave Brown, who is caught on tape beating the unholy hell out of a dude. And the accolades are no surprise; after all, Harrelson is re-teaming with "The Messenger" writer/director Oren Moverman after that collaboration earned both of them Oscar nominations.

And the rest of the folks involved with "Rampart" are no slouches either. Based on a novel by James Ellroy ("L.A. Confidential"), the film also features stars like Robin Wright, Sigourney Weaver, Steve BuscemiNed Beatty, Ben Foster, Ice Cube, Anne Heche and Cynthia Nixon, so it's not exactly short on talent. »

‘Rampart’ Trailer: Woody Harrelson Makes the Bad Lieutenant Look Like a Boy Scout

18 November 2011 1:30 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

From the moment I heard about Rampart the movie placed high on my 'must-see' list. The Messenger director Oren Moverman reunites with Woody Harrelson and Ben Foster to tell a story about the Lapd's disgraced Rampart division, with a script originally written by La crime master James Ellroy. Ice Cube is a good cop and Ned Beatty is in the movie, as are Sigourney Weaver and Steve Buscemi. The movie has hit some festivals and I'm already hearing so much about how good Harrelson is in the film that I've just had to shut down all of the chatter until I get a chance to see the film. Rampart is scheduled for a limited Oscar-qualifying run in New York and La starting next week, but most of us won't get a chance to see it until January 2012. There is a trailer right now, however, so you can get a taste »

Woody Harrelson, “Rampart” get one-week qualifying run – Awards Alley

By Sean O’Connell

hollywoodnews.com: Woody Harrelson started receiving raves for his searing performance in Oren Moverman’s “Rampart” right after the film world premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. Certain Oscar bloggers have been championing Harrelson’s inclusion in the Best Actor race, a category that appears to be relatively crowded with assumed nominees like George Clooney (“The Descendants”), Jean Dujardin (“The Artist”) and Brad Pitt (“Moneyball”).

Millennium Entertainment believes in Harrelson, and the film. They’ve scheduled a one-week qualifying run for the police drama at Laemmle’s Sunset 5 in Los Angeles beginning Wednesday, Nov. 23. “Rampart” then will open wider on Jan. 27, hopefully with some awards heat.

The novel writer Dashiell Hammett is involved in the investigation of the mysterious disappearance of a beautiful chinese cabaret actress in San Francisco.

Dashiell Hammett was the original hard-boiled noir crime writer, clearing the path for Raymond Chandler and, more recently, James Ellroy to follow with their depictions of the corrupt criminal underbelly of West Coast USA.

This film is born out of Joe Gore’s book, which fictionalised Hammett’s life, putting him front and centre in one of his own dime-store detective novels. Having left Pinkerton’s detective agency to »
