What to Buy this Week: DVD and Blu-ray releases for July 11th

11 July 2011 4:00 AM, PDT | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

It’s another jam-packed week of DVD and Blu-ray releases, here’s the rundown of what’s available to buy from today, July 11th 2011.

Pick Of The Week:

Slaughter High (DVD)

For Marty, School Days were the worst days of his life… When the alumni of an all-American high school make a trip to attend a class reunion, they reconnect with their pasts in ways more bloody and fatal than they could possibly imagine in the 80s slasher classic Slaughter High. On arrival, they discover the school shuttered and in disrepair, as if the reunion were just a ruse to drag them back. Still, the old pupils decide to break in and celebrate anyway. A deadly error considering that Marty, the nerd whose teenage life they made a living hell, is lurking in the dank, dark corridors, waiting to bring fear, torment and slicing, dicing murder to each and every one of them. »

That’s What I Am review

A film produced by WWE that's got nothing to do with wrestling, That's What I Am stars Ed Harris. But is it any good?

Newsflash: bullying is wrong, and the 1960s were a time of rosy-tinted wonder. If either of these seem revelatory, then That's What I Am may be for you. If not, don't bother.

Written and directed by Michael Pavone and produced by the WWE Studios production company, That's What I Am isn't a wrestling spectacle. Instead, it's a dumb, blithely simple drama that is all moral and no content.

Andy (Chase Ellison) is a kid on the verge of teenhood who is assigned a collaborative piece of schoolwork with Big G (Alexander Walters), a loner who happens to be tall, supposedly ugly, and, horror of horrors, ginger. At first, Andy is anxious, as every social capital-conscious boy in an American school movie is, to be paired with such an unpopular classmate, »

That's What I Am Movie Review

Title: That’s What I Am Director: Mike Pavone Starring: Ed Harris, Chase Ellison, Molly Parker, Daniel Roebuck, Randy Orton, Daniel Yelsky, Alexander Walters, Mia Rose Frampton, Amy Madigan The fact that actual personal experience informs a movie’s narrative flavor doesn’t, of course, guarantee its quality in any way, shape or form — a fact reaffirmed by writer-director Mike Pavone’s “That’s What I Am”, an awkward mish-mash of observational coming-of-age cliches and half-baked moralizing that feels like a bloated, not particularly well sketched episode of “The Wonder Years”. Set in California during the 1960s, the film centers on 12-year-old Andy (Chase Ellison), a bright but small eighth-grade kid whose favorite teacher, Mr. Simon »

Wrestler Trailer Alert: 'That's What I Am' Is a Heavyweight Drama

13 April 2011 11:19 AM, PDT | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

The 1960s were a simpler time: geeks were geeks, teachers were role models and professional wrestlers didn't co-star in family oriented indie flicks. But this is the 21st Century -- and nothing proves this point more than the brand new trailer for "That's What I Am."

Here's the dilly: produced by WWE -- you know, the wrestling people -- "That's What I Am" is a heartfelt coming-of-age parable starring Ed Harris as an earnest English teacher who takes a regular kid (Chase Ellison) and a jug-eared pariah (Alexander Waters) under his wing during the mid-60s and teaches them the importance of not being douchebags. And, oh yeah, WWE star Randy Orton is also in it.

Oh, how times have changed.

Of course, this isn't the first film WWE has put together, but most of their earlier efforts had a bit more testosterone (see: "The Scorpion King," "The Marine") and a bit less, »

‘That’s What I Am’ Trailer – WWE’s Randy Orton Makes His Acting Debut Opposite Ed Harris

13 April 2011 10:00 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

[1] A new trailer has been released for WWE Studios' That's What I Am, starring Ed Harris, Amy Madigan, Molly Parker -- and professional wrestler Randy Orton. Yup, it's that WWE. The gargantuan sports entertainment corporation has been producing features through its filmmaking arm since 2002, including The Scorpion King (as co-producers), The Marine, and last year's Legendary. That's What I Am looks like a bit of a departure from the company's earlier projects, in that it doesn't seem to feature much in the way of action or wrestling. Watch the trailer after the jump. That's What I Am stars Chase Ellison as Andy, a typical eighth grader who learns lessons about courage and tolerance when he's assigned to work with an unpopular geek (Alexander Walters). Harris plays Andy's wise, compassionate English teacher, who faces troubles of his own when he becomes the target of a potentially destructive rumor. Madigan and Parker »

Review: That’s What I Am

22 February 2011 8:58 AM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

WWE Studios has been producing a steady stream of big, dumb action schlock since ’02, their only real winner being Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s starring vehicle, The Rundown. To be fair, they co-produced to Universal’s Strike Entertainment; I imagine someone had the good sense to lock Vince McMahon in a closet during the lion’s share of that film. The wrestling organization’s studio wing has in recent years been playing it up to the PG-13 crowd to cast a wider demographic net, and thus their film library has seen some variation from wooden wrestlers blowing shit up and punching faces. Basically, WWE Studios wants you to know they have a heart– and so we get That’s What I Am, television writer/director Michael Pavone’s big screen feature debut. That’s What I Am is the story of Andy Nichol (Chase Ellison), a middle of the road student in his last year of junior »
