ShockYa's Top 10 TV Shows Of 2011

31 December 2011 4:01 AM, PST | ShockYa | See recent ShockYa news »

Even though there were several TV misfires in 2011, there was a ton of good things about this year’s TV-watching season. Here’s a list of the top 10 shows of 2011 . 1.“Luther”: Idris Elba hasn’t been nominated for a Golden Globe for nothing. BBC/BBC America’s “Luther” is a critically-acclaimed show from across the pond that features a detective who fights crime while dealing with his internal struggle, sometimes, violently so. This show is also notable because, at least in America, it’s one of the few shows that has a person of color as their lead character, thus broadening the landscape of viable actors in Hollywood. 2.“The Walking Dead”: AMC »

Charlize Theron Opens Up On Her Role In Prometheus

30 December 2011 2:05 AM, PST | ShockYa | See recent ShockYa news »

Ridley Scott’s film “Prometheus” has been talked about as one of the biggest movies of 2012, if not the biggest one of 2012, period. Mostly because it’s Scott’s return to the sci-fi genre he helped redefine with “Alien,” but also because of the stellar cast, which includes Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Idris Elba, Patrick Wilson and Charlize Theron. Not much has been made of what Theron’s role is (or anyone else’s roles, for that matter), but Perez Hilton managed to get the scoop on what Theron will be doing in the film. According to the site, Theron said in a recent interview that her character is the opposition in the »

Judge Sends Ghost Rider Creator Packing

29 December 2011 4:12 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

With Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance getting set to make its theatrical debut in a few weeks, a lawsuit over who actually owns the character recently played out dramatically in the judicial system. Read on for the latest.

According to Deadline, rights to the flaming-skull, motorcycle-riding Ghost Rider belongs to Marvel Comics, a federal judge ruled. The vigilante played by Nicolas Cage in a 2007 movie and its upcoming sequel debuted in 1972 after Marvel freelancer Gary Friedrich first conceived him, the judge ruled. In his 2007 lawsuit, Friedrich claimed Marvel had infringed his rights to the character and its use in movies and merchandise. The judge said Friedrich relinquished his rights to Ghost Rider when he endorsed and cashed checks from Marvel. Those checks contained language relinquishing all rights.

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, directed by Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, stars Nicolas Cage, Nicolas Cage's hair, Idris Elba, Johnny Whitworth, »

The arts in 2012: the British blind spot

Mark Lawson kicks off our 2012 arts special by looking at how the Olympic Games will highlight the cracks in our culture

A theatre director recently told me that he would not be applying for the currently vacant job of artistic director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, because he wasn't sure what any of the three words in the organisation's name mean any more: monarchy, Elizabethan authorship and permanent acting troupes are all concepts currently in flux. In the same way, anyone seeking to promote "British culture" – a key marketing concept in the year of the 2012 London Olympics – faces the problem that the definition of the United Kingdom is contracting while the definition of culture is expanding.

Many things that would seem to qualify for a notional British pavilion in an entertainment fair soon require to be subject to qualification. The X Factor is definitely British – but is it culture? My Week with Marilyn, »

There's no doubt about it; the trailer for Ridley Scott's Prometheus turned a lot of heads upon its debut with fans on fire to dissect every little detail. Writer Damon Lindelof recently sat down with the L.A. Times to talk about what we saw in the trailer. Read on for his take and details.

“One part of me sort of wants to be working on something where I can say, ‘This is exactly what this is’ without being secretive or mysterious, but I think that with the genesis of this a couple of years ago - when Ridley announced that he wanted to make an ‘Alien’ prequel - that’s where this began, and where it’s evolved to is this conversation: Is it or isn’t it [an 'Alien' prequel]? And I think this little sort of dance that we’re doing basically existed prior to anybody seeing anything, »

Germain’s 10 Most Anticipated Films of 2012

27 December 2011 12:00 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

If 2012 is the end of the world, that's all right with me. Hollywood has overstocked the Mayan calendar's final year with so many potentially amazing movies that trying to cut it down to a top ten was virtually impossible. How could movies like The Amazing Spider-Man, Brave or Lincoln not be on this list? Ten then became twenty, which was more satisfying but there were still a few major films lingering. So, while I could have easily done 30, here are my ten most anticipated films with a bloated honorable mention list. Is your most anticipated on the list? Here are my honorable mention anticipated films of 2012, from least to most anticipated: John Carter, This is 40, World War Z, Gangster Squad, Wreck-It Ralph, Lincoln, The Amazing Spider-Man, Brave, American Reunion, Looper And now the top 10, complete with photos and brief descriptions. 10. Marvel Set Game Of Thrones’ Alan Taylor To Direct Thor 2

27 December 2011 5:00 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

The first of our superhero films from Marvel this year, Thor was an impressive box office and critical success when it came out in April this year, taking just shy of $450m. from its $150m. budget.

Pretty much ever since it found such success in cinemas, there’s been talk of a sequel, and it officially came out in the summer that the original’s director, Kenneth Branagh, was opting out of returning for the sequel, in what seemed to be a completely friendly parting.

Since then, there was first talk of Brian Kirk, best known for his work on Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones, coming on board the project, but then in October, Patty Jenkins officially signed on for the director’s job instead.

Earlier this month, though, word came that Jenkins and Marvel had parted ways based on creative differences, and the search has been back on »
