Roman J. Israel Esq. review

Denzel Washington notches up another Oscar nomination for Roman J Israel Esq. Here's our review of the movie...

Denzel Washington is on fine form as the title character in Roman J. Israel Esq, the second feature by writer-director Dan Gilroy. Picking up his sixth Oscar nomination for Best Actor for his work, Washington is right at the centre of this legal drama about a tireless activist attorney who goes through his own moral Gift Of The Magi, discovering that he has inspired change at the precise moment that he sells out his own values.

For the past 36 years, Roman has worked at a small defence firm, covering the invaluable backroom work while his respected senior partner, William H. Jackson faces judges and represents clients. When William has a serious heart attack, his firm is dissolved and Roman is offered work by a much larger firm run by his partner's former student,

Roman J. Israel, Esq. Review

  • HeyUGuys
Author: Stefan Pape

Dan Gilroy’s second offering from the director’s chair is Roman J. Israel, Esq. and it opens with the eponymous protagonist outlining a lawsuit he’s taking out – against himself. It’s a rather bold opening sequence, for it’s wordy and full of legal jargon that will go over the head of the majority of viewers. And while this does seem somewhat concerning in regards to the rest of the picture, such is the strength in the narrative and characters within it, that it simply doesn’t matter. Much goes over our head, but little evades our heart.

With this first scene also comes a foreboding sense, for we gather that things do not turn out well for Roman, played here by the reliable Denzel Washington. At the start of play Roman is an idealistic defence attorney who works tirelessly behind the scenes for his partner,

Movie Review – Roman J. Israel, Esq. (2017)

Roman J. Israel, Esq, 2017.

Directed by Dan Gilroy.

Starring Denzel Washington, Colin Farrell, Carmen Ejogo, Amanda Warren, Tony Plana, and Sam Gilroy.

Synopsis:

After more than 30 years as the backroom brains of a small law firm, Roman J. Israel’s life is turned upside down. The company’s front man is in a coma and the business is handed over to a hot shot corporate lawyer. Roman is forced to work for him and soon finds himself facing a crisis of conscience.

What the J stands for remains a mystery. But in Dan Gilroy’s first film since Nightcrawler, it’s transparently clear what Roman J. Israel stands for. He’s an idealistic defence lawyer and he’s precise enough never to leave out the Esq. When asked what it means, he describes it as a term of honour – above a gentleman, but below a knight. In other words, something of an anachronism.
