Joaquin Phoenix Is Jesus Christ in First Mary Magdalene Trailer

Joaquin Phoenix Is Jesus Christ in First Mary Magdalene Trailer
Universal Pictures UK has released the first trailer for Mary Magdalene, which has been slated to arrive in the U.K. on March 16, 2018 and in the U.S. on March 30, 2018. The trailer gives us our first look at actress Rooney Mara, who takes on the iconic role of Mary Magdalene for this historical drama. What will be interesting to see as this film gets closer to hitting theaters is if it will be the next movie to try and remove itself from the now-toxic Weinstein Company brand.

While Universal Pictures International is handling distribution in both the U.K. and Germany, The Weinstein Company is handling U.S. distribution, and after the Harvey Weinstein sexual harassment scandal, many of the company's projects have went to great lengths to distance themselves from the company. Awards season hopeful Wind River cut all ties with The Weinstein Company, getting outside funding for an

Mary Magdalene trailer, starring Rooney Mara

David Crow Nov 30, 2017

Mary Magdalene has Rooney Mara embodying the controversial Biblical figure, opposite Joaquin Phoenix's Jesus.

Mary Magdalene is certainly a figure who has been prominent in pop culture in the last 30 years or so, as well as really all Western culture for closer to 2,000 years. The woman who was worth mentioning a dozen times in the Bible’s New Testament (which is more than apostles Simon and James the Lesser got!) was still never fully counted as one of the apostles by the scriptures—and since one of the those 12 was Judas Iscariot, that is saying something.

Now, the Biblical figure takes the spotlight, with former The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo star Rooney Mara as the titular star of Mary Magdalene, joined by the ever-eccentric Joaquin Phoenix as her admired love interest with a famous dad. The film was directed by Garth Davis, who comes off the 2016 acclaimed drama,

Trailer Watch: Rooney Mara Embarks on a Spiritual Journey in “Mary Magdalene”

Mary Magdalene

Rooney Mara steps into Biblical times in the first trailer for “Mary Magdalene.” The film promises to tell “the untold story” behind one of Jesus’ most famous followers. We’re told the title character has brought shame on her family, but she insists that if there’s a demon in her, “it’s always been them.” She finds a friend in Jesus (Joaquin Phoenix), who believes that she “will do God’s will.”

According to the drama’s official synopsis, Mary leaves her home behind “to join a radical new social movement” led by Jesus, “who promises that the world is changing. Mary is searching for a new way of living, and an authenticity that is denied her by the rigid hierarchies of the day.”

“Are [women] so different from men you must teach us different things?” Mary asks in the spot. Paul the Apostle (Chiwetel Ejiofor) doesn’t appreciate her candor.

Rooney Mara is Mary Magdalene in First Trailer for 'Mary Magdalene'

"I'll be with you until the end..." Rooney Mara plays Mary, and Joaquin Phoenix plays Jesus, with a cast including Chiwetel Ejiofor as Peter, Tahar Rahim as Judas Iscariot, Ryan Corr as Joseph, as well as Ariane Labed. From the footage, you can see this is a very stylish new take on the classic story, and instead of focusing on Jesus carrying the cross, now we get to see what it's like from Mary's perspective. The synopsis for the film explains: "Mary defies her traditional family to join a new social movement." Ha, right, sure, what a great way to modernize this story. See below. Here's the first official

A new take on the story of Jesus is here, but this time, the focus is shifted onto one of the Bible’s lesser-discussed apostles of Christ: Mary Magdalene. Rooney Mara stars as the titular character opposite Joaquin Phoenix as Jesus and Chiwetel Ejiofor as the Apostle Paul. The trailer focuses on the tension between Mary and the other apostles because of her gender, and show Paul in particular repeatedly urging Jesus that she doesn’t belong with them. “People will judge us,” he says, for allowing a woman to travel with them. ‘Saturday Night Live’: Kit Harrington, Oprah, Eminem, and Others Audition for ‘The Lion King’ — Watch
The cast of Disney’s live-action remake of “The Lion King” was recently announced, and it’s unsurprisingly stacked: Donald Glover, Beyoncé, James Earl Jones, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Billy Eichner, Seth Rogen, John Oliver, and more are lending their voices to the latest childhood-ruiner.

For every actor who got cast in Jon Favreau’s new take on the animated classic, however, one hopeful contender did not. “Saturday Night Live” decided to speculate on those broken dreams with a sketch about the screen tests of everyone from Nick Offerman and Cardi B to Eminem and Kit Harrington. Watch below.
