Sam Worthington vs. Ryan Reynolds for Flash Gordon?

29 December 2009 5:07 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

News on a new Flash Gordon movie has been scarce and we’ve not heard of any official developments since nearly a year and a half ago when Neil Moritz acquired the rights to the film and Breck Eisner was picked to direct. That changes this week as rumors surface of who is being looked at to play the lead role. Hollyscoop is reporting that an insider of theirs informed them that Sam Worthington and Ryan Reynolds are up for the role of Flash against two others.

For those unfamiliar with the classic sci-fi tale, the story of Flash Gordon takes place when our planet is hit with a meteor strike. We find out through the story that these meteors are weapons from the planet Mongo sent by Ming the Merciless, their evil ruler. Flash Gordon and friends make their way to the planet and adventure ensues.

Rumors: Worthington as Flash Gordon, McAvoy as Ian Fleming

29 December 2009 2:52 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Some interesting casting rumors for you to chew on today. Our friends at Pajiba are reporting that James McAvoy has been cast as James Bond creator Ian Fleming in a biopic in development at Animus Films and Palmstar Entertainment. The film will supposedly focus on the (younger) years in Fleming's life (when he was in the British Navy) that gave him inspiration for the character of James Bond. Additionally, the not-as-trustworthy website HollyScoop is reporting that Sam Worthington is in the running for the role of Flash Gordon in Breck Eisner's remake of the 1980 sci-fi film. I actually like the sound of both rumors. The biopic is tentatively titled Ian Fleming and is being independently financed with an early budget of $40 million. I'm not sure if this has any relation to the DiCaprio-produced Fleming biopic we first wrote about in 2008. That project is based on an original screenplay »

Sam Worthington to Play Flash Gordon?

29 December 2009 8:02 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Hollywood is currently shut down for the holidays, but that's not stopping a few casting rumors from leaking out. According to Hollyscoop (who are probably just as reliable as the dude who sells dope on the corner near your house), both Sam Worthington and Ryan Reynolds are two of only a handful of actors on the Flash Gordon shortlist. Hollyscoop' source is, of course, one of those shady "Hollywood insiders", though we already know they're gearing up this film for a potential 2012 release, and so I'm sure there's a little bit of truth here, especially since Worthington and Reynolds would be the go-to frontrunners for these types of roles (I wouldn't be surprised if we hear Worthington mentioned for Captain America, too).

"But he's Australian!", you might scream. That's why one insider says it could be a pretty big deal if Worthington lands the part of the All-American Flash Gordon, »

Sam Worthington in Consideration for 'Flash Gordon'

24 December 2009 12:26 AM, PST | Celebrity Mania | See recent Celebrity Mania news »

There is a chance Sam Worthington will be a comic book hero in his next feature project. Recent report has suggested that the leading man of the James Cameron-directed "Avatar" is among the top contenders for the lead role of "Flash Gordon" should Columbia Pictures move on with its feature project plan.

"Right now it's between Sam, Ryan Reynolds and one or two others for the lead role should the project actually get off the ground," a Hollywood insider talked about the likelihood of the 33-year-old taking the title role. Considering that Sam is an Australian actor, the insider added, "If he gets the role it would be quite a big deal as Flash is an all-American hero."

"Flash Gordon" is based on the classic strip originally drawn by Alex Raymond. The story centers around a young polo player who has been kidnapped and taken to planet Mongo. In the strange planet, »

New The Crazies Stills; Director to Shoot The Brood Remake

23 December 2009 1:09 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

The countdown has begun for Breck Eisner's remake of The Crazies. With a new trailer recently revealed, Overture Films has also released two new photos from the movie, which don't depict some of the horror imagery of the trailers but do depict Timothy Olyphant and Radha Mitchell in some tense situations.

A side-effect of The Crazies is helping Eisner establish himself as a credible director of horror remakes. Having turned down the opportunity to remake The Creature of the Black Lagoon earlier this year, Eisner will direct the remake of David Cronenberg's The Brood. Cronenberg's 1979 flick followed a woman who telepathically controls a, well, brood of mutant children who do her bidding, which gives screenwriter Cory Goodman a broad and unusual storyline to work with.

The Brood marks Eisner's second horror remake from the 70s. We're not sure which will be next, but Fox's The Fury remake doesn't yet have a director. »

Terror Tidbits (Fango #290): Mad About The Crazies

21 December 2009 10:00 PM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Blam! Brains and blood splatter the windshield of a big rig as the character who just took a shot to the head flies backward, slamming down on the concrete. Elsewhere in the truck bay/workshop, the smell of burning flesh hangs heavy in the air (actually, the chemical stench of a previously safely-on-fire stuntman). Gunfire echoes in the hangar-sized building; “Cut!” is called, playback watched, and then on to another setup on the remake of George A. Romero’s The Crazies.

It’s a slightly nippy March night in Georgia, and day 12 of the nine-week shoot on the latest gruesome facelift of a ’70s horror movie, being directed on a significantly higher budget by Breck Eisner (whose credits include Sahara and Fear Itself’s The Sacrifice). Having an estimated $25 million to play with gives Eisner the opportunity to take Romero’s core concept and give it an action-packed approach the »

Director updates on Creature from the Black Lagoon and The Brood

19 December 2009 7:13 AM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

It's been taking rather a long time for the Creature from the Black Lagoon to re-emerge on to the big screen for the planned remake. And now it's evolving yet again...

The project has been in development at Universal for more than a quarter of a century and the studio has just hired a new director, Carl Rinsch.

Rinsch, whose previous work is mainly in commercials, was recently linked to the new Alien prequel (now being helmed by Ridley Scott) and will be in the hotseat for the samurai film 47 Ronin (starring Keanu Reeves).

Meanwhile, Breck Eisner - who had dropped out of the Creature remake earlier this year - is now directing a new version of The Brood, David Cronenberg's 1979 horror film about mutant children instructed to carry out violence through a psychic link with their mother.
