Watch: ‘Stitches’ Throws a Perfect Game of Emotional Family Drama

21 June 2012 12:00 PM, PDT | | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Why Watch? Baseball is at the heart of Mike Eisenberg‘s short film, but its life blood is the bond between family members and the hard reality of losing that bond. In it, Sam (Steffan Argus) has to come to grips with his grandfather’s death. Gorgeously shot on the Red Mx, it’s not the kind of bombastic genre fare that usually gets notice. It’s contemplative and relies heavily on strong acting work and characters that mirror ourselves. Heavy in the right ways, this movie draws out emotion without leaving you empty. In the spirit of full disclosure, I know Mike, but the quality here should speak for itself. What will it cost? Only 14 minutes. Skip Work. You’ve Got Time For More Short Films »

18 May 2012 6:21 PM, PDT | | See recent news »

Welcome back to another edition of Kickstart This, FirstShowing's weekly column dedicated to spreading the word about cool indie projects that need your help to become a reality. This week, we've got three great film projects that we want to spotlight: a drama about a temptation that arises in young marriage called Homewrecker; a wild and kinetic Guy Ritchie-esque crime caper known as cockroaches; and finally a cool stop-motion practical effects movie called Sci-Fly. Take a look at these three latest projects, sound off in the comments below, and don't forget to toss the filmmakers a few bucks if you can. See them below! First up, there's Homewrecker. My friend Mike Eisenberg (who writes at The Movie Mash) has lamented the incessant appearance of infidelity as a plot point in movies these days, and I totally agree with him. Like in every other film, someone is being unfaithful to »

New, Longer Prometheus International Trailer

18 March 2012 12:28 PM, PDT | | See recent news »

In what’s a decidedly different version from the trailer released yesterday, nevermind it being a longer one too, watch this international trailer that debuted in Manila for 20th Century’s Fox wildly anticipated Prometheus. After the enthusiastic response yesterday at WonderCon and all over the internet, many were full of praise for the new preview:

Devin Faraci (@devincf): “New Prometheus Trailer rules. Brush up on your Chariots of the Gods.”

Mike Eisenberg (@Eisentower30): “Somebody give the trailer-makers a statue. They are unreal.”

Ed Douglas (@EDouglasWW): “The fact that Ridley Scott hasn’t won an Oscar is an enormous crime.”

Garth Franklin (@darkhorizons): “Scott’s certainly made The trailer for a film this Summer. Beats the crap out of any Avengers or Tdkr clip so far.”

The Playlist (@ThePlaylist): “Nolan’s move. Prometheus trailer is outstanding.”

Prometheus Trailer.

Book Review: Inception and Philosophy

25 January 2012 10:56 AM, PST | Nolan Fans | See recent Nolan Fans news »

From the moment the end credits rolled, I knew then (sitting in a darkened theater back in July 2010) that Inception was going to a film that would get audiences talking — and not just because of its ending. It’s a thought-provoking and awe-inspiring film. I didn’t really need to tell you that, I am positive you all agree with me. In fact, I’ve seen (and participated in) the many varied discussions and debates held in our discussion forums attesting to it. These discussions have been taking place in internet forums, living rooms, coffee shops, and emptied out theaters for the past year and a half. Naturally, Inception was a perfect candidate for the Blackwell Philosophy and Pop Culture Series of books; a collection of publications that dissect and philosophize various popular works of media, from Harry Potter to South Park.

So, what exactly is the book about? Inception »

On the latest episode of the Nolan Fans Podcast, Teddy and Alex talk with guest hosts Mike Eisenberg and Jc Blass about the 6-minute IMAX prologue and the theatrical trailer for The Dark Knight Rises. Coming in at a record length of 90 minutes, we get into a wild, tangent filled discussion about everything revolving around Christopher Nolan’s last entry in his Batman trilogy. We advise you not to listen if you haven’t seen the IMAX prologue… or Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, The Ides of March, Deathly Hallows Part 2, Marley and Me or Superman Return for that matter. Yup, spoilers for various movies are all over this podcast.
