‘The Lying Game’ Recap: Is Rebecca Really Sutton & Emma’s Mom?

Is the big mystery really over, or is this just another lie? Either way, Rebecca terrifies me now. If there's one thing you should take away from the Jan. 23 episode of The Lying Game, it's that Rebecca (Charisma Carpenter) is not to be trifled with. But since we didn't discover why until the very end of the episode, let's hash out some of the other lessons we learned this week. Sutton & Ryan have a sexy, awkward history: Yes, kids, it looks like we might have a new love triangle on our hands. Mads' (Alice Greczyn) new British squeeze Ryan (Misha Crosby) apparently hooked up with Sutton (Alexandra Chando) in ninth grade. I'm not sure how far they went, but Rebecca is (probably) Emma & Sutton's mom: I know we all pretty predicted it, but when Annie Hobbs (Stacy Edwards) told Sutton and Emma she wasn't their real mother, and Rebecca appeared

Hawaii Five-0 1.17 “Powa Maka Moana” Review

Just like last week, Hawaii Five-0 provided us with a fine but unspectacular standalone offering last night. (Although, this was arguably a little more disappointing than all the jungle-based action.) ‘Powa Maka Moana’ wasn’t an entirely weak episode, but, upon reflection, I find that it had moments that I enjoyed, rather than being wholly satisfying in its entirety. In my review of one of Five-0’s more impressive episodes, ‘Ke Kinohi,’ I mentioned the idea that there’s a standard “type” for kidnapping plots, which includes ominous phone calls, not paying the ransom (which inevitably leads to at least one hostage dying), and other such infuriating clichés. ‘Ke Kinohi’ defied those clichés, but this didn’t, and as a result it ended up being a predictable and relatively dull hour.

The story for the episode was about a group of pirates (even if their outfits initially made me think

Choose The 1998 Academy Award Winners!

I love that a heated discussion over Titanic’s infamous Oscar sweep of 1998 has already begun over at Laurent’s excellent retrospective. I guess it’s just the nature of this particular film. There is something about Titanic that hits a raw nerve in people and they feel a need to defend/criticize it so passionately.

As it happens, I fall in the ‘unconditional love’ category and I’m not afraid to admit it. To this day I have a passion for Titanic, a film that so perfectly matches what a glorious, spellbinding, big spectacle romance against an historic backdrop should be, and those films are so rare, especially when they are made with such precise and meticulous detail from James Cameron.

We shouldn’t be embarrassed over how much we loved Titanic in the 90′s. We should embrace it. So as our third ‘Choose The Winners’ article, we are

"Back to the Future" in Blu, Uwe Boll's in "Darfur" and More New DVDs

  • IFC
A look at what's new on DVD today:

"Back to the Future: 25th Anniversary Trilogy"

Directed by Robert Zemeckis

Released by Universal Home Entertainment

Yes, we're finally getting the footage of the original Marty McFly, Eric Stoltz, for the first time, but for many simply having the hi-def version of Robert Zemeckis' time-travel franchise will be good enough. Commentaries, deleted scenes, a full-length documentary and much, much more come on this new set of the trilogy.

"Alien Anthology"

Directed by Ridley Scott, James Cameron, David Fincher, Jean-Pierre Jeunet

Released by Fox Home Entertainment

While not as much of an upgrade over its previous DVD release as "Back to the Future," the Blu-ray update of the four "Alien" films worth owning now boasts isolated scores for each film, all of Ridley Scott's sketches for the first "Alien," the uncut documentary of David Fincher's ill-fated "Alien 3" as

Episode Recap: The Mentalist - 3.02: "Cackle-Bladder Blood"

  • TVStar
I have to say, I'm really starting to be optimistic about this season. The writers at Heller and Co. seem to have heard our gripes about the things that went wrong in season two and are fast on the way to fixing them! Although, this is probably the worst title for an episode, ever. We are met with Jane, still isolating himself in his "Bat Cave," at Cbi headquarters, playing with a remote control helicopter. He receives a call from his brother in law, Danny Ruskin (Kevin Rankin), who has gotten himself into a bit of trouble and needs Jane's help. This is the first family we've seen for Patrice Jane, other than flash backs of his wife and daughter, so it should make for some interesting interactions. Of course, Jane goes to meet Danny, and in true Jane-style, digs himself in deeper. Police arrive at an office building to
