Laura Prudom: 'Supernatural' Finale Recap: Who Made It Out Alive?

18 May 2012 7:13 PM, PDT | Aol TV. | See recent Aol TV. news »

Note: Do not read on if you have not seen Season 7, Episode 23 of The CW's "Supernatural," entitled "Survival of the Fittest."

Reviewing a season finale is very different from reviewing a singular episode, and "Supernatural" finales are more challenging than most. The end of a season has to tie up loose story threads from the entire season preceding it, while still leaving enough dangling to create a compelling jumping off point for next year. Thankfully, despite a few (okay, more than a few) lackluster episodes this season, I think that the season finale managed to course-correct in a way that makes me truly optimistic for Season 8. The last couple of episodes didn't build up much momentum going into the finale, in comparison with the stellar runs at the end of Seasons 1, 2, 4 and 5, but a finale still needs to stand on its own merits, and against the odds, I felt like »

Archaeologists of the Impossible Meet Nigh Invulnerable Spoon!

Special delivery! Oh, Arthur! The thrill of modern postism!

This seemed like the too good to be true theme for someone of Matt Kindt’s talents. Warren Ellis and Jon Cassady’s Planetary is not only one of my favorite comics ever, it’s one of my favorite genre experiences partaken. Rather fitting for a book that so sublimely experimented with, or rather, traversed genre. In doing so, Planetary collided with several familiar speculative fiction entities during its run, and I thought it would be great to have a commission depicting a scene of the team running into The Tick, a character that simultaneously played what quickly became the ideal adventures of a superhero while absurdly spoofing the genre. A meeting between a superhero comic book’s comic book and  a panel of post-Human curiosity on them and their pulp heritage.

My first experience with The Tick was through the animated series, »

CW's "Supernatural" Shows that "Reading is Fundamental" When the Word is Out: A Television Review

10 May 2012 9:02 AM, PDT | 28 Days Later Analysis | See recent 28 Days Later Analysis news »

*spoiler alert Director/writer: Ben Edlund. Kevin Tran (Osric Chau) is more than your typical overachieving honours student prepping for his Sat. In "Supernatural's" latest, "Reading is Fundamental," he'll soon be the Chosen One, and that’s not because of what he knows. It’s in what he does not that makes this episode an interesting watch. His world is turned upside down because of all the supernatural forces chasing after him, Winchesters included. But if the angels have their say, he's going to become a hermit and will have to discover the Word of God. Ever since last season's purge, their numbers are few and they are still leaderless. The return of the angels and demons in the last few episodes should come to be no surprise. Crowley will no doubt appear. Ever since the Winchesters cracked the clay seal that they have stolen from Dick Roman, they »

Supernatural – “Reading is Fundamental” Review

7 May 2012 3:56 AM, PDT | Boomtron | See recent Boomtron news »

That was a lot better than I could have hoped for. For the last few episodes, Supernatural has stumbled trying to get its ideas across in a cohesive fashion. It’s managed to squeeze in some solid moments to break up the mediocrity, but at the end of the day this has been a pretty weak string of episodes. “Reading is Fundamental” doesn’t make anymore or less sense, but the combination of Ben Edlund’s strong direction and a visit from the new and improved Castiel at least drew your attention away from the plot holes. Even Meg somehow managed to not drive me crazy with her dry delivery of every line she has. Things don’t always work, but if you can make the audience forget things aren’t working, then you can trick them into having a good time regardless. In that sense, Supernatural succeeded wonderfully.

TV Recap: 'Supernatural' Episode 721 - 'Reading is Fundamental'

6 May 2012 9:00 AM, PDT | FEARnet | See recent FEARnet news »

Supernatural Episode 721 "Reading is Fundamental" Written & Directed By: Ben Edlund Original Airdate: 4 May 2012 In This Episode... Dean takes a hammer to the slab he and Sam stole from Dick Roman. With each strike, freak lightning and thunder strikes across the country. One of these bolts of lightning strikes an overachieving Michigan honors kid named Kevin Tran. He convulses, blacks out, loses times, and is essentially possessed. Something else happens when Dean strikes the slab: Castiel wakes up. Meg calls the boys to come down - he is acting weird. The boys head to the institution to see Castiel. He is definitely different. He is not vengeful god-like Castiel; he »

Supernatural Ep. 7.21, “Reading is Fundamental”: Purposeful pacing builds momentum towards finale

Supernatural Review, Season 7, Episode 21: “Reading is Fundamental”

Written by Ben Edlund

Directed by Ben Edlund

Airs Fridays at 9pm (Et) on the CW

This week, on Supernatural: Kevin is an honor student, Meg’s handy with sharp implements, and Cas wants you to pull his finger

Picking up right where we left off, this episode opens with the reveal of the red clay as nothing more than packaging for a stone tablet containing (part of) the Word of God. With a few episodes still remaining in this season, it may have been tempting to hold off on this, but luckily the writers go a different way and kick things in to gear. The storm triggered by Dean’s chiseling is effective, instantly adding gravitas and foreboding to the proceedings, and bringing in Kevin, yet another clueless human Chosen to have his entire life turned upside down, is smart, »

'Supernatural' Sneak Peek & Star Misha Collins Talks Castiel

4 May 2012 5:35 AM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

The CW's "Supernatural" (Fridays at 9 p.m. Et) seems to pride itself on putting its characters through the wringer. Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) have both been to hell and back, literally, while their angelic sidekick, Castiel (Misha Collins), has been exploded multiple times, fallen victim to Leviathan possession and is currently suffering from Lucifer-centric hallucinations ... Needless to say, they're all long overdue for a vacation.

The May 4 episode -- "Reading Is Fundamental," written and directed by genre favorite Ben Edlund -- sees Castiel awaken from his catatonic state not a moment too soon; a new prophet has been activated, and there are archangels on his tail, leaving him in desperate need of some divine intervention. HuffPost TV has an exclusive sneak peek at the episode below and last week, we caught up with Misha Collins to find out what's coming up for the ever-evolving Castiel, including his relationships with Dean, »

'Supernatural': Have Dean and Castiel been acting out of character?

1 May 2012 5:16 PM, PDT | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

When Dean and Castiel first reunited on "Supernatural" this season, our favorite moment of the episode was when Dean returned Castiel's trench coat, which he'd been hanging onto in the months since Castiel's "death." It revealed a lot about Dean's hope for his friend's return and his ability to forgive what he considered to be a betrayal.

Not everyone felt quite the same way about that scene. This week, stars Jensen Ackles and Misha Collins appeared at a convention in Rome and discussed their struggle with the dialogue written for their characters.

First of all, when asked whether Dean had forgiven Castiel for breaking Sam's wall, Ackles replied with a definitive "No," and added that Dean would not forgive Castiel this season. "Maybe next year, we'll have to see."

Dean's lack of forgiveness made the trench coat scene difficult for the actors. "I believe that Misha said something along the »

Supernatural 7.21 Photos: Castiel Returns and a New Prophet Comes to Town

When we last saw Castiel on Supernatural he didn't remember who he was.  While searching for a healer to help Sam, who was stuck in a mental hospital, Dean was shocked to find his old friend living a normal, suburban life.  Of course, that life was destroyed when Meg and Dean encouraged Cas to remember his true angelic identity in order to get through a group of demons who were guarding the hospital.

Unfortunately, Castiel couldn't heal Sam's broken wall, but he could transfer Sam's Hellucinations into himself, which is precisely what he did.  As the Winchesters drove away, we saw a scrubs-wearing Cas sitting quietly on the bed, starring at the wall, while Meg stood guard as a new employee of the hospital.

Castiel returns in the upcoming May 4 episode, written and directed by fan favorite Ben Edlund. »

Supernatural Preview: Castiel Returns to Help Defeat the Leviathans

The race to stop the Leviathans really began with this week's Supernatural.  The Winchesters headed back to the mountain cabin to regroup and Bobby stopped by to deliver information about Dick Roman's plans, which he saw before he died.  That's when they got a message from Frank, who warned that someone was trying to break into his hard drive and could find information on the brothers in there.

As it turns out, Dick Roman had found Frank's hard drive and asked an employee in his It department - Charlie - to crack it within 3 days or she's fired.  After Charlie witnessed a Leviathan killing her boss, she ran home, desperate to escape.  That's when the Winchesters caught up with her and they came up with a plan for Charlie to hack Dick Roman's email.  Thus began the caper, with »

Supernatural Spoilers: When Will Castiel Return? And Will the Winchesters Face Angels Again?

One of our favorite Supernatural angels was last spotted in episode 7.17.  After Sam had a breakdown and was committed to a mental hospital, Dean went in search for a true healer that could fix his brother.  What he found was a man named Emmanuel, who was actually an amnesiac Castiel.  Dean brought his old pal back to save Sam, but didn't want to reveal his true identity until they were faced with a group of demons they couldn't get past.

Castiel did manage to smite the hell out of the demons and remembered everything, including the sins he had committed in an effort to defeat Raphael.  Later, he was unable to heal Sam, as the wall in his head was simply too crumbled to piece back together.  Feeling horribly guilty for having put Sam in this position, »

The Lost, Forgotten & Undersung Projects Of Joss Whedon

11 April 2012 8:04 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Joss Whedon is about to have a very good week. The writer/director/producer has, until recently, been best known for his work on television: he turned his poorly-received screenwriting debut "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" into one of the most beloved cult series of all times (which itself got a long-running spin-off, "Angel"), and followed it up with the short-lived but passionately followed sci-fi Western "Firefly," a show that lasted a single season, but managed to get its own cinematic sequel, "Serenity," which marked Whedon's big-screen directorial debut.

Until now, "Serenity" has been the director's best-known entry into the movies, but that's all about to change. He wrote and produced the inspired, raucous horror flick "The Cabin In The Woods," which hits theaters on Friday, and tonight sees the world premiere of "The Avengers," the Marvel superhero team-up movie that is one of the most keenly anticipated films of the year, »

Supernatural 7.17 Review: You Broke It, You Bought It...Or, Is This What Redemption Looks Like?

A curious thing has happened to Supernatural.  However you may feel about Sera Gamble as a showrunner and however you may feel about the season-long arcs (which, admittedly, I have had a few problems with lately), the truth is that Ms. Gamble has emerged as one of the strongest writers on the show.  Together with Ben Edlund, Gamble has, this season, delivered (in my humble opinion) three consistently solid episodes.  Episodes that not only do justice to the Winchesters, but also to the other two characters that make up the core of Supernatural: Castiel and Bobby.

This week's episode, "The Born-Again Identity", not only re-introduced Castiel and Misha Collins to the show, but it also reminded me why I love Supernatural.  For all of the frustration that some fans may have on both sides of the Castiel argument, »

'Supernatural' Stars Talk Castiel's Return

This week's "Supernatural" sees the return of Misha Collins' fan-favorite (yet divisive) character, Castiel. During a recent visit to the show's Vancouver-based set, HuffPost TV discussed the reintroduction of Castiel with the series' frontmen Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki.

The charismatic actors also delved deeper into Sam's breakdown and where the latter half of the season will take the Winchesters. They dropped a few hints about what we can expect from their characters in upcoming episodes and on the introduction of a female hunter who has a romantic history with both Sam and Dean (lucky her!). We also caught up with executive producer Sera Gamble, who wrote the Castiel comeback episode, via phone to talk about the big episode and those to come, including some updates on the new and recurring characters we can look forward to seeing in the weeks ahead. Tread lightly, there are spoilers ahead.
