Jared Leto teases Suicide Squad's Joker: 'He's a beautiful disaster'

22 February 2015 2:30 PM, PST | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

Jared Leto has described his version of Batman villain the Joker in Suicide Squad as a "beautiful disaster".

Director David Ayer's upcoming DC cinematic universe movie features Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Jai Courtney as super-villains sent on a mission of redemption by the government.

It is not yet clear how the Joker will fit into Suicide Squad's storyline, but Leto described the Clown Prince of Crime's characterization in an interview with Billboard.

"The opportunity to take on this nearly Shakespearean character - that's what graphic novels and comic books are becoming, right," he said. "[He's] this beautiful disaster of a character - what a big challenge."

Leto also joked about his struggle to put on weight for the upcoming movie.

"I'm trying to gain a lot of weight," he explained. "It means I have to eat every couple of hours - and I'm terrible at eating a lot. »

Will Smith has offered an update on the status of upcoming DC Comics movie Suicide Squad.

Director David Ayer aimed to begin shooting the super-villain team-up movie this spring, before Tom Hardy dropped out of the lead role as Rick Flag.

Joel Kinnaman, Jon Bernthal and Joel Edgerton are among the actors who are rumoured to replace Hardy as Rick Flag, who leads the villains on a mission of redemption.

Speaking to USA Today, Smith - who will play Deadshot - said that the recasting of Rick Flag has only led to a minor delay.

"[Ayer] turned the screenplay in before Christmas. What happens is Hollywood shuts down," Smith explained. "He was still working and he wanted to [start shooting] April 13. So it takes a couple weeks to gear back up at the top of the year and people have taken [other] movies. »

Jai Courtney will also be appearing as Boomerang, while model Cara Delevingne will be taking on the role of Enchantress.

Joel Kinnaman To Replace Tom Hardy In Suicide Squad As Rick Flag

13 February 2015 11:38 AM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

After what amounted to a bit of an extensive search over the past month, the trades are now reporting that Joel Kinnaman has replaced Tom Hardy in Suicide Squad. The RoboCop and The Killing star will play Rick Flag, the leader of the titular supervillain team working for Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller.

Hardy exited the highly-anticipated project last month due to scheduling conflicts with his next project, Birdman director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s The Revenant, as well as promotional obligations for Mad Max: Fury Road. After he vacated the role, rumors began to swirl that Jake Gyllenhaal, Jon Bernthal and Joel Edgerton were in contention.

Kinnaman may not be as big a star as someone like Hardy or Gyllenhaal, but I think he’s a great choice for Rick Flag. He displayed a tremendous amount of range in The Killing, and proved that he could handle a leading role in last year’s RoboCop. »

'Suicide Squad' Casts Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg

13 February 2015 11:28 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Warner Bros. may have found their new Rick Flagg, with The Wrap reporting that Joel Kinnaman is set to replace Tom Hardy in Suicide Squad. The news comes almost exactly one month after Tom Hardy left the project, citing scheduling conflicts with Alejandro Gonz&#225lez I&#241&#225rritu's The Revenant. There were unconfirmed reports that the actor actually backed away because his role was reduced in new versions of the screenplay.

If Joel Kinnaman's deal is finalized, he will join Will Smith (Deadshot), Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Jared Leto (The Joker), Jai Courtney (Boomerang), Cara Delevingne (Enchantress) and Viola Davis (Amanda Waller). Jesse Eisenberg has also been rumored to reprise his role as Lex Luthor from next year's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Joel Edgerton and Jon Bernthal were also in consideration for the Rick Flagg role, but it appears that Warner Bros. is now going with Joel Kinnaman. »

Joel Kinnaman Looks To Step In For Tom Hardy In 'Suicide Squad'

13 February 2015 11:18 AM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Since breaking out to international attention thanks to "Easy Money" and "The Killing," Joel Kinnaman hasn't quite translated that success to major studio movie roles. Everyone has already forgotten about the rom-com "Lola Versus," and at least the failure of "RoboCop" couldn't be blamed on him (it was just a bad idea from the start). Next month, he'll be pairing up with Liam Neeson in "Run All Night," but now it looks like he's taking another stab at a franchise project. THR reports that Kinnaman is in early talks to replace Tom Hardy in "Suicide Squad." Jake Gyllenhaal, Joel Edgerton, and Jon Bernthal were previously rumored as possible replacements to play Rick Flag in the comic book movie ensemble flick. The latter are apparently still possibilities, but for right now, Kinnaman is the frontrunner. Hardy exited the project over scheduling issues and due to the script, which hasn't been locked yet. »

Robocop Star Joel Kinnaman Frontrunner To Play 'Rick Flagg' In Suicide Squad

13 February 2015 10:18 AM, PST | ComicBookMovie.com | See recent ComicBookMovie news »

It looks like Suicide Squad has finally found its Rick Flagg, with Joel Kinnaman said to be the frontrunner to take on the role in Fury director David Ayer's 2016 DC Comics adaptation. There were rumours that Tom Hardy departed the project due to his character not having a particularly large role, but the official explanation is that it came down to scheduling issues caused by shooting The Revenant and promotional duties for Mad Max: Fury Road. It very much sounds like this is all but a done deal, so expect to possibly hear something official about Kinnaman playing Flagg soon.  However, The Hollywood Reporter says that Joel Edgerton (Warrior) and Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead are also being considered. The rest of the Suicide Squad cast includes Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, Jai Courtney, Cara Delevigne and likely Viola Davis and Jesse Eisenberg too. The movie will be »

Buzz About the Cannes Lineup Hits Berlin

9 February 2015 10:00 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Even before the Berlin festival is over, and the Oscars remain under wraps, the thoughts of many executives have turned to Cannes.

At this stage, the selectors of Cannes different sections have seen very little, so there is no such thing as a certainty.

Following some of the chatter and looking at which films might have the right credentials comes up with a strongly international selection for Thierry Fremaux and his team to choose from.

From Europe, two-time Grand Prix-winner Matteo Garrone’s period fantasy-horror, “The Tale of Tales,” seems a likely competition contender, with Salma Hayek and Vincent Cassel heading the cast.

Fellow Italian, and previous Palme d’Or-winner Nanni Moretti, has “My Mother” (aka “Mia Madre”) while Paolo Sorrentino’s Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel-starrer “Youth” (aka “La Giovinezza,” aka “In the Future”) is also a strong competition contender.

The halls are starting to hum softly here in Berlin as the European Film Market swings into gear. This morning, FilmNation unveiled a series of offshore output deals for titles from Open Road, which will kick off with the Jamie Foxx/Michelle Monaghan-starrer Sleepless Nights.

Though it’s not likely to be a frenzy, and with currency concerns in the market internationally, Berlin should see more action in the coming days. In 2014, The Weinstein Company made a record-setting $7M deal for The Imitation Game which has now made about $140M worldwide and has an armful of Oscar nominations to boot.

New on Netflix: February 2015

27 January 2015 3:45 AM, PST | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

What will February bring to Netflix? "House of Cards" returns for its much awaited third season, but not until Feb. 27. If you can't wait for your Kevin Spacey fix until then, "Now: In the Wings on a World Stage" (2014), a documentary of Spacey starring in a production of Shakespeare's "Richard III," is available on Feb. 1.

And the 2004 "King Arthur," starring Clive Owen and Keira Knightley, isn't exactly Shakespearean, but look at how many great actors -- like Mads Mikkelsen, Ioan Gruffudd, Hugh Dancy and Joel Edgerton -- have gone on to much bigger things.

You can also stream "Joe," one of Nicolas Cage's best films in recent years; the overlooked indie "The Brothers Bloom" with Mark Ruffalo, Adrien Brody and Rachel Weisz; and the barely-in-theaters thriller "The Two Faces of January," starring Viggo Mortensen and Kirsten Dunst.

Here's a much larger rundown of what's new on Netflix in February 2015, provided by Netflix. »

'Suicide Squad' Director Teases Storyboard and Script

24 January 2015 1:19 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Director David Ayer apparently isn't too affected by the lack of having a Rick Flagg locked in for his big screen comic book adaptation Suicide Squad. While he hasn't provided an update on the actor search, he has decided to give us all a slight little tease, showing off his workspace, where he is in the middle of drafting the script and creating storyboards. It's impossible to read any of the words, or even make out the lone figure who we see depicted here, but it's cool to see this side of the production nonetheless.

David Ayer is writing the script himself, based on the popular DC Comic about a group of super villains who go on a secret mission to clear their name. It was his latest drafted that reportedly caused Tom Hardy to step away from the project. If we're to believe the rumors swirling around the production, »
