Top Cat Begins Coming to UK Theatres in May

Classic cartoon lovers rejoice! That fantastic feline superstar returns to UK movie screens in just a few weeks. As the Hoyt Curtin TV theme proclaims, “…but above everything, he’s the most tip top…Top Cat!”. Tc, as close friends call him, did indeed debut on American TV screens on the then fledgling ABC network in September of 1961 (talk about your nine lives!). This show, along with “The Jetsons” and “Jonny Quest” was an attempt by animation studio Hanna-Barbera to replicate the prime time success of that “modern stone-age family “The Flintstones” just a year or so before. Unfortunately Tc was not the rating smash that Fred and company were, so only one season (30 half hour episodes) were produced. But the kitty con-artist and his pals endured as a Saturday morning staple, then a syndicated smash. As beloved as the show was in its native Us, “Top Cat” was an even bigger hit overseas,

Top Cat! The indisputable leader of the gang. He’s the boss, he’s a pip, he’s the championship. He’s the most tip top, Top Cat. Yes he’s a chief, he’s a king, But above everything, He’s the most tip top, Top Cat

Many will still remember the 1960 show and jingle – perhaps not all 30 episodes in exact detail, but the TV-show has successfully lived on since 1961 and is loved even by those who didn’t grow up with it.

The show became wildy popular in countries like Argentina and Mexico which explains why this 2011 film was made and released in Mexico and later dubbed to English for a wider audience.

Blu-ray Review: Top Cat – The Movie

Top Cat

Stars (the voices of): Jason Harris, Chris Edgerly, Melissa Disney, Ben Diskin, Bill Lobley | Written by Kevin Seccia, Timothy McKeon | Directed by Alberto Mar

I hope I’m not going to negate any of my assiduously collated street credibility, but when I was little I used to really like Top Cat. Looking back, I believe I’m correct in saying that it was a reasonably witty and funny programme and it’s not simply nostalgia that’s influencing these fond memories. I remember my sister and I used to watch a Top Cat VHS that we won in a competition run by Little Chef pretty much on loop some days. So when I was invited to attend the preview screening of Tc’s big screen debut, I was cautiously excited about it. Obviously, the film is aimed very much at youngsters, but surely there’d be plenty

This week's new films

The Angels' Share (15)

(Ken Loach, 2012, UK/Fra) Paul Brannigan, John Henshaw, Gary Maitland, Jasmin Riggins, Roger Allam, William Ruane. 101 mins

If anyone can cut it at Cannes, Ken can, and this recent surprise Jury Prize-winner sees Loach doing what he does so well: dignifying ordinary lives and chronicling social history as it happens. The tone is a little lighter this time, though, as we follow a violent young offender's potentially fruitful encounter with the whisky industry, thus bringing together the best and worst of Scotland.

Prometheus (15)

(Ridley Scott, 2012, Us) Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron. 124 mins

With all the zealous promotion and yet tight secrecy, this long-awaited Alien prequel couldn't live up to fans' expectations, could it? There's no way of telling at the time of writing, so let's just say it'll be a brilliant triumph, and a complete disaster.

Movie Review - Top Cat: The Movie (2011)

Top Cat: The Movie, 2011.

Directed by Alberto Mar.

Featuring the voice talents of Jason Harris, Chris Edgerly, Ben Diskin, Matthew Piazzi, Bill Lobely, Melissa Disney, Fred Tatasciore and Bob Kaliban.

Synopsis:

Top Cat has to contend with a new police chief who is unhappy with Officer Dibble's efforts to control Tc and the gang.

I have very vivid memories of watching all of those great old Hanna Barbera cartoons when I was a wee one, with The Flintstones being the obvious favourite, one that I used to watch over and over amongst breaks in watching He-Man, Ghostbusters or Thundercats. Their characters were always fun, and the comedy, both the set pieces and the physical tomfoolery, drew me in like a moth to a flame. As did Top Cat, the rapscallion alley cat who was always up to mischief.

Now, like many of the others, Top Cat has made it to the silver screen,

Knievel gets animated with Disney

Disney Xd, which is rebranding from Toon Disney in February, is partnering with daredevil "Kaptain" Robbie Knievel for a 2-D animated comedy series about a 12-year-old boy who wants to become the world's greatest daredevil.

"Kid Knievel," from Walt Disney Television Animation, marks the first animated show for Disney Xd, which is primarily targeted at boys ages 6-14 and their families. Knievel will serve as a stunt consultant on the series, which is in production for a fall 2009 premiere.

The series centers on a boy (voiced by Chris Edgerly) -- short in stature but big in heart -- who, inspired by Knievel, overcomes incredible obstacles in his quest to become the world's greatest and most extreme daredevil.

Matt Jones and Danny Cooksey also voice roles in the show, which was created by Sandro Corsaro. Chris Savino is the executive producer and director.

" 'Kid Knievel' sets the tone for the animated series to come,
