Rising starlet Imogen Poots has joined the film adaptation of Nick Hornby's novel "A Long Way Down," which has Pascal Chaumeil at the helm. She'll star along side Toni Collette, Pierce Brosnan and Emile Hirsch, who previously joined the tale of four disparate individuals who meet one another on a London rooftop on New Year's Eve, all with the same intention to commit suicide. Instead of jumping, these complete strangers make a pact to stay alive and stay together until at least Valentine's Day. Lensing begins this September in London from a script by Jack Thorne, whose debut film "The Scouting Book For Boys" earned major praise. [THR]
Michael Winterbottom's "24 Hour Party People" featured an excellent performance by the versatile Steve Coogan as Factory Records head Tony Martin, and the actor is now set to return to the '70's British music scene. Coogan is joining Elaine Constantine's "Northern Soul, »

You can add Megalyn Echikunwoke and former “Prison Break” star Amaury Nolasco to the cast of the latest “Die Hard” movie, “A Good Day to Die Hard”. Bruce Willis returning for the fifth time around as New York supercop John McClane, who this time around finds himself in Russia battling Russian villains intent on doing, you know, bad stuff. But this time one McClane won’t be enough to save the day, so our hero teams up with his estranged son Jack (“Spartacus’” Jai Courtney) for twice the Die Hard power. Nolasco, last seen in the much-derided cross-dressing sitcom “Work It”, will get some of his dignity back by playing a pal of Willis’ John McClane, and appears early in the film. Meanwhile, “House of Lies” actress Echikunwoke’s role is unknown. But being that she’s purty, I’m guessing she’ll be the love interest for Courtney’s Jack McClane. »

A Good Day To Die Hard, the fifth installment and fourth sequel in the legendary Die Hard franchise, may currently be in production, but that doesn't mean that the movie isn't done recruiting cast members. Variety has learned that both Amaury Nolasco and Megalyn Echikunwoke have signed on to play roles in the upcoming action film with Bruce Willis. Both actors are best known for their work on TV, with Nolasco starring in series like Prison Break and Work It while Echikunwoke starred on both CSI: Miami and House of Lies. While the actress' role is being currently kept under wraps, Nolasco will apparently only have a small role in the movie, playing John McClane's (Willis) friend at the start of the picture. Based on a script by Skip Woods (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) and directed by John Moore (Max Payne, Flight of the Phoenix), A Good Day To Die Hard »

We’ve got a couple of casting stories to share this evening. First up, Harry Potter thesp Alan Rickman has landed the lead role in the biopic Cbgb. Variety reports that Rickman will play New York City’s famed nightclub owner Hilly Kristal in the film, with Randall Miller (Bottle Shock) set to direct. The film will plot the real-life story of Kristal’s Cbgb club and how it impacted the underground music scene with artists like the Talking Heads, the Ramones, and Blondie. The script was written by Miller and Jody Savin, and the two wrote the role of Kristal with Rickman in mind. Miller was supposed to first shoot the Dennis Wilson biopic The Drummer, but that film has been pushed back to the fall. Rickman is a stellar actor, and we recently learned that Rickman may be playing President Ronald Reagan in Lee Daniels’ historical drama The Butler. »

It's been a while since Whit Stillman's last release back in 1998 (Last Days Of Disco) but his latest film, Damsels In Distress, is well worth the wait.
Like Stillman's previous films, Damsels focuses on articulate characters obsessed with modern etiquette and social correctness but transports us to Sevenoaks University college campus. Here we meet Violet and her do-good chums, Heather (Carrie, MacLernore) and Rose (Megalyn Echikunwoke) who together run The Suicide Prevention Centre, giving doughnuts out and running tap dance therapy classes for heartbroken girls contemplating suicide. The centre is not their sole concern, as the gang also conduct “Youth Outreach” work by going to parties to help guys who haven't reached or realised their full potential yet.
Damsels opens with old style silent movie credits with full cast names rolling in keeping with the film's 50s' feel. Violet and friends dress in vintage clothes, the film's title is »

Director: Whit Stillman Writer: Whit Stillman Starring: Greta Gerwig, Analeigh Tipton, Carrie MacLemore, Megalyn Echikunwoke, Ryan Metcalf, Adam Brody, Billy Magnussen, Jermaine Crawford, Caitlin Fitzgerald, Zach Woods, Domenico D'Ippolito, Nick Blaemire, Aubrey Plaza, Hugo Becker, Meredith Hagner It should say something to us that Seven Oaks College utilizes the Roman alphabet rather than the more commonly accepted Greek alphabet in the naming of their sorority and fraternity houses, as this references the Romans' propensity for crude decadence over the Greeks' philosophical pursuits. Propagated by doofi (the plural of doofus), the fraternities of Seven Oaks have de-evolved into a state of idiocracy; the situation is so grim that two male characters do not even know the names of the basic colors. (Did writer-director Whit Stillman's name of one of these dimwits Thor [Billy Magnussen] as a reference to the Norse god or the Avenger?) We can only assume that this fictional New »

We’ve got the trailer and some great new images for Whit Stillman’s cutting Damsels In Distress, out this weekend in the UK!
Following a circle of women who undertake the task of challenging a male dominated environment and tackling their peers depression using the profound powers of tap dance and doughnuts, the film looks set to be an enjoyable watch. If not for the plot, definitely for Greta Gerwig whose deadpan brilliance is evident in the trailer.
Leading the gaggle of girls, Gerwig takes the role of Violet, the driving force in implementing change at Seven Oaks College alongside the prim and proper Rose (Megalyn Echikunwoke) and provocative Heather (Carrie MacLemore.) Analeigh Tipton (Crazy, Stupid, Love) as the new transfer student and Adam Brody (Cop Out) as her dashing admirer also star in this slightly forced depiction of the young and studious.

Four girls at an Ivy League college attempt to teach their male peers some manners in Whit Stillman's urbane comedy
During the golden days of Hollywood's big studio system, directors such as Michael Curtiz and John Ford made three or four films a year, hoping that perhaps every couple of years a Stagecoach or a Casablanca would survive. Over the past 40-odd years, however, few film-makers have had the opportunity to develop such large bodies of work, and some have come to owe a good part of their mystique to the very paucity of their oeuvre.
The most obvious examples are Terrence Malick (70 next year) and Whit Stillman (60). Either through bad luck or excessive fastidiousness, they have respectively made five films in 40 years and four films in 20 years. The lengthy gaps in between have created expectations that are hard to fulfil, and admirers have been inclined to overestimate their achievement. »

Damsels In Distress (12A)
(Whit Stillman, 2011, Us) Greta Gerwig, Analeigh Tipton, Adam Brody, Ryan Metcalf, Megalyn Echikunwoke. 99 mins
Stillman casts a wry eye across the college campus, and settles on Gerwig's clique of preppy girls who confuse charity with condescension. The result is distinctively articulate, witty, gently surreal and hilariously sarcastic. But as well as parodying these misguided teens, Stillman clearly has great sympathy for them. It's good to have him back.
Avengers Assemble (12A)
(Joss Whedon, 2012, Us) Samuel L Jackson, Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johansson. 142 mins
Considering the lack of leeway Whedon had with this superhero juggernaut, he pulls off a remarkable feat, keeping all the plates spinning with as much irony as he can get away with. It descends into a numbing effects orgy, but it's fast and fun along the way.
Albert Nobbs (15)
(Rodrigo García, 2011, UK/Ire) Glenn Close, Mia Wasikowska. 113 mins

College can often be a trying and even traumatic time for some, but on hand to help the students of Seven Oaks, a stately-looking East Coast establishment, are a trio of prim and proper female students comprised of group leader Violet (Greta Gerwig), Rose (Megalyn Echikunwoke) and Heather (Carrie MacLemore). Managing the campus’ Suicide Prevention Center, they dispense sagely advice alongside offering refreshments, donuts and the opportunity to engage in a number of dancing techniques, designed to help alleviate the stress of student life.
Into their lives comes Lily (Analeigh Tipton), a transfer student trying to find her feet. The girls instantly take a shine to their new classmate and decide to mould her in their own images, although she isn’t beyond criticising their peculiar methods and outlook.
After a 13 year absence from the big screen, Damsels in Distress is a welcome return for director Whit Stillman. Like his »

Whit Stillman's comeback is a charming campus comedy
Whit Stillman is back after 14 years with another elegant, eccentric and utterly distinctive movie: a gorgeously if oddly coloured butterfly of a film, liable to get broken on the wheel of incomprehension or exasperation. It's a campus comedy of romance that does not render up its style and identity with the zappy eagerness of most movies. You have to let the film's language grow on you, and this is not a quick process, perhaps especially because the register of instantly readable irony is not present.
Greta Gerwig stars as Violet, a weirdly self-possessed student whose mission is to humanise and civilise the yobbish males on campus. She is the leader of a doe-eyed quartet of pretty, serious-minded co-eds, including Rose (Megalyn Echikunwoke), who affects a British way of speaking, at one stage earnestly deploring a guy's pickup moves as those of »

Damsels In Distress follows a trio of beautiful girls who set out to revolutionize life at a grungy East Coast College – the dynamic leader Violet Wister (Greta Gerwig), principled Rose (Megalyn Echikunwoke) and sexy Heather (Carrie MacLemore). They welcome transfer student Lily (Annaleigh Tipton) into their group, which seeks to help severely depressed students with a program of good hygiene and musical dance numbers. The girls become romantically entangled with a series of men – including slick Charlie (Adam Brody), dreamboat Xavier (Hugo Becker) and the mad frat pack of Frank (Ryan Metcalf) and Thor (Billy Magnussen)—who threaten the girls’ friendship and sanity.

U.S.A., 2011
Oh, the hoards and hoards of films which try valiantly to dissect and study teenage and young adulthood, those formative years when boys and girls learn so much of themselves while at school. There are dramas, horror films, the not so cleverly coined ‘dramedies’, and so on and so on. Most of us have lived through those unforgettable experiences, whether we reminisce them fondly or otherwise being an entirely different matter. Because many understand what they mean, there is an endless supply of material, be it adapted or original, to create more of such movies to the delight or annoyance of many. College, or university as it is recognized in Canada, is unfortunately not solely the domain of the bright and brilliant. Stars: Greta Gerwig, Adam Brody, Analeigh Tipton, Carrie MacLemore, Megalyn Echikunwoke | Written and Directed by Whit Stillman
The opening film of the Bradford International Film festival, Damsels in Distress is an interesting film… I found at first that the style Whit Stillman’s approach to college life took quite a while to get used to. The girls of the Suicide Prevention Centre have quite a unique way of speaking and the world they live in is as crazy as their view of the world, or at least their world (the college life).
The story centres around the Seven Oaks college campus and a group of four girls that have taken it upon themselves to save their fellow students from themselves. They run the suicide prevention agency with the aim of finding students that may be in danger of succumbing to the harsh nature of their lives and trying to kill themselves. »

Chicago – The sly satires of Whit Stillman have cultivated a fan base that appears to consist largely of his fellow peers. Manhattan-based filmmakers such as Wes Anderson, Noah Baumbach and Lena Dunham have cited his subdued comedies as an influence on their own similarly mannerist yet considerably more accessible work. For many moviegoers, Stillman’s brilliantly constructed, emotionally distant pictures are easy to admire but difficult to like.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
The young, upwardly mobile “urban haute bourgeoisie” that populate his films serve as the target for Stillman’s observational, deeply affectionate humor. These characters may have big vocabularies and even bigger egos, but they are ultimately no less vulnerable and naive than their fellow peers in the lower social classes. I’ll never forget the hilarious scene in Stillman’s best film, 1998’s “The Last Days of Disco,” where a group of twentysomethings utilize their long-winded skills of analyses to pick »
