Marilou Diaz-Abaya was born on March 30, 1955 in Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines. She was a director and producer, known for José Rizal (1998), Muro-ami (1999) and Bagong buwan (2001). She was married to Manolo Abaya. She died on October 8, 2012 in Taguig City, Metro Manila.

She and Fely Crisostomo are the only women to have won the FAMAS Award for Best Director.
She is the most awarded woman director in the history of the Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences. She has already received 4 FAMAS Best Director awards.
