Mel Gibson’s ‘Hacksaw Ridge’ Dominates AACTA Awards

Mel Gibson’s return to directing was warmly welcomed in his native Australia where his “Hacksaw Ridge” won a total of nine Aacta Awards. “The Daughter” came second with three prizes.

The Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts’s performance awards were presented at a gala on Wednesday in Sydney. They followed an earlier ceremony on Monday at which technical awards had been handed out.

Hacksaw Ridge” added five performance awards to its four technical awards. They included best film, best director, best original screenplay, best lead actor and best supporting actor.

Miranda Otto took the best actress prize for “The Daughter,” while the film’s discovery Odessa Young was named best supporting actress.

Among the show’s highlights were the presentation of the Aacta Longford Lyell Award to Paul Hogan Am and the Aacta Trailblazer Award to Isla Fisher.

The third season of Screentime.s ABC drama Janet King, starring Marta Dusseldorp, goes into production this week.

Joining the established cast of Damian Walshe-Howling, Peter Kowitz, Christopher Morris, Andrea Demetriades, Anita Hegh and Hamish Michael for the third instalment will be Don Hany, Robert Mammone, Susie Porter, Andrew Ryan, Huw Higginson, John Bach, Steve Le Marquand, Arka Das and Adam Demos.

This season, Janet will confront .a hornet.s nest of illegal gambling, organised crime and money laundering, while investigating the tragic death of a young sports star..

Written by Greg Haddrick, Felicity Packard, and Niki Aken with Alexa Wyatt as writer/script producer, the season will be directed by Peter Andrikidis, Grant Brown and Catherine Millar.

“12 Monkeys” has been renewed for Season 3 on Syfy; Kris Jenner and more celebrities will appear on E! second season of “Hollywood Medium with Tyler Henry;” VH1 has announced Marc Lamont Hill as the host of its new late night talk show; and Netflix has debuted the first trailer for Season 3 of “BoJack Horseman,” in today’s TV news roundup.


Syfy has renewed “12 Monkeys” for Season 3, Variety has confirmed. The time-travel drama will return with a 10-episode third season in 2017. The show, based on the 1995 film of the same name, is currently in the midst of its second season, airing Mondays at 9 p.m. on Syfy. “12 Monkeys” stars Aaron Stanford and Amanda Schull and is executive produced by Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett. The show hails from Universal Cable Productions in association with Atlas Entertainment. EW first reported the show’s renewal.

Andrew Knight on Jack Irish: "I'm really pleased with it"

Asked how he's doing after a whirlwind year, screenwriter Andrew Knight is characteristically understated:.

"I'm alive and trying to construct a breakfast at the moment".

In between film work last year, Knight wrote new seasons of Rake and Jack Irish simultaneously, a process he calls "a blur"..
