The Best One-Season Wonder TV Shows That Never Got Renewed — IndieWire Critics Survey

16 May 2017 9:11 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)

This week’s question: What is the best one-and-done show, a.k.a. a One-Season Wonder? (This refers to shows that only got one season and tragically did not get renewed, as opposed to limited series that never intended to continue.)

Allison Keene (@KeeneTV), Collider

There are so many! But for me the best will always be “Freaks and Geeks.” It’s a show that I watched at an age before I really understood the whole TV renewal/cancellation process, but even then I knew it was unjustly short. The show was such a great blend of smarts, snark, and genuine emotions, in a way that could actually be painful to watch. »

Prison Break Season 5 Episode 1 Review – ‘Ogygia’

5 April 2017 8:21 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Shaun Munro reviews the first episode of Prison Break season 5…

Some eight years after the show’s original run wrapped up, Prison Break has been resurrected by Fox amid their current obsession with nostalgic retreads, reuniting most of the principal cast members with series creator and writer Paul Scheuring. For better and indeed for worse, the new limited event series kicks off in spectacularly ridiculous fashion, likely to serve as familiar comfort food to fans who will themselves admit they’re not watching for particularly coherent storytelling.

Smartly opening with a handy summary of the story up to this point, the first episode nevertheless appears to suggest that this season will be a largely self-contained affair. Yes, new viewers won’t appreciate the character dynamics or various callbacks to prior seasons, but on the basis of “Ogygia”, it functions relatively well on its own.

Spoiler alert: Michael Scofield is alive!

Fox’s Prison Break revival kicked off Tuesday night with the rather obvious reveal that Michael (Wentworth Miller) did not die from his brain tumor — nor from a fatal electrocution, as The Final Break insinuated. His brother Lincoln (Dominic Purcell) uncovers in the premiere that Michael actually has been in a Yemeni prison under the name Kaniel Outis, who is apparently a renowned terrorist.
