Adam Dubin, a graduate of the NYU film program, co-directed the classic Beastie Boys music videos "Fight For Your Right To Party" and "No Sleep Till Brooklyn." In 1998, MTV voted "Fight For Your Right To Party" the number one comedy music video of all time. In 2001, TV Guide included "Fight For Your Right To Party" in their list of the 50 greatest music videos of all time. In 2007, Fuse TV aired a 30 minute episode about "Fight For Your Right To Party" as part of their series "Videos That Rocked The World."
1976: Adam Dubin attends first rock concert; Kiss at Nassau Coliseum. The effect is profound.
1977: Adam Dubin receives a sound movie camera for his birthday. The effect is also profound.
1982: Adam Dubin begins NYU film program. He moves into Weinstein dorm and meets his new roommate, Rick Rubin. He also befriends former NYU student and film maven Ric Menello who runs the Weinstein front desk.
1986: Adam Dubin graduates from NYU. He co-directs with Ric Menello his first music video "Fight For Your Right To Party by the Beastie Boys. The following year, he co-directed again with Ric Menello the Beastie Boys follow up video "No Sleep Till Brooklyn.
In 1990, Adam began a long working relationship with Metallica when he began documenting the band as they recorded their legendary "Metallica" album. The in-studio filming lasted 10 months. Adam directed a 15 minute film presentation which opened for the band on their worldwide tour. Adam directed the music video for "Nothing Else Matters" which was the third single release from the "Metallica" album. In 1992, Adam continued to document Metallica on tour across North America and in London at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert For AIDS Awareness. Adam spend much of the year assembling two feature length documentaries of the album and tour called "A Year And A Half In The Life Of Metallica Parts 1 & 2." At the time, it was the fastest selling rock VHS and number one on the Billboard charts. Adam continued to work for Metallica for many years directing documentaries for "The Cunning Stunts" tour, the "S&M" concerts and the making of the "Garage Inc." album.
In 1994, Adam co-wrote and directed the underground cult feature film comedy "Drop Dead Rock" starring Adam Ant and Deborah Harry. The film premiered at the Aberystwyth Film Festival and played at many international film festivals including the South By Southwest Festival. It played on pay-per-view TV outlets and was released on DVD.
In 1999, Adam began working with cutting edge stand up comedians. He co-wrote and directed the short film, "Sidesplitters: The Burt & Dick Story" starring Lewis Black and Jim Norton. Also in the film are comedians Jim Gaffigan, Eddie Brill, Jim David and Judy Gold.
Adam directed the feature length concert/documentary starring SNL comedian Jim Breuer "Heavy Metal Comedy." The documentary footage was a yearlong odyssey following Jim across the United States as he honed his material for the concert. The concert was a unique blend of a comedy show with a rock concert. The film premiered at the Tampa Bay Film Festival and on pay-per-view TV. It came out on DVD in 2002.
Adam co-wrote and directed the award winning "American Dummy" starring Otto & George, Jim Breuer, Lewis Black, Jim Norton, Pete Correale, Greg Giraldo and porn legend Nina Hartley.
In 2001, in the wake of the tragedy of 9/11, Stone Temple Pilots recorded a version of the song "Revolution" by The Beatles. Adam directed a music video which documented the recording of the song. The song and the music video were issued on a CD whose proceeds went to help 9/11 charities. This video also proved to be the last music video of this great band who broke up the following year.
Adam co-wrote and directed his third short comedy film "The Gynecologists" starring Pete Correale, Greg Fitzsimmons, Lewis Black, Jim Norton, Judy Gold, Vanessa Hollingshead and Rich Vos. All three films came out on DVD under the title of "Wash Your Mouth Out With Soup!" "Sidesplitters: The Burt & Dick Story" and "The Gynecologists" are also available on a DVD called "A Pair Of Lewis Black Shorts."
Adam continues to work with stand up comedians completing a series of webisodes for the Bonnaroo Music Festival. The short films include Lewis Black, Dave Attell, Flight Of The Conchords, Nick Kroll, David Cross, Finesse Mitchell, John Bowman and Lynne Koplitz.
Adam directed the DVD extra portion of Dave Attell's 2007 HBO stand up special "Captain Miserable."
Current projects:
In 2006, Adam directed a five camera HD concert of Glenn Tilbrook of Squeeze and his band The Fluffers at the Canal Room in New York City.
Adam has written and directed an animated short film featuring the voices of Jackie Mason, Lewis Black, Greg Giraldo and Nick Kroll. It is being animated now.
Adam is presently working on a personal project, a documentary about John Lennon in New York City. Adam has spent over ten years researching this film. Since 2005, Adam has filmed over twenty interviews with people who had first hand involvement with John Lennon during this period.
2006 brought a different creative endeavor for Adam as guitarist for The Stoned, a hard rock band with Kory Clarke (Warrior Soul, Space Age Playboys), Scotty T. Dimebagger, and Sebastian Correa. But that is another story.
