Although corny on the surface, Coronation Street writer John Fays drama about mill workers struggles against injustice is packed with compelling plotlines and vivid characters

A handful of porridge, an uncomfortable pitstop on the outside khazi, an iron bell to clock you in and its off to the spinning mules for the workers of Channel 4s The Mill, a period saga from Corrie writer John Fay that has one eye on industrial revolution-era Cheshire, and another firmly on the present. The fact that its based on events following the 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act seems incidental: so much of what it covers is still relevant, as anyone on zero hours will attest.

Drawing on the exploits of real characters who once staffed Quarry Bank Mill, Fays drama was something of a sleeper when it debuted in 2013. His compulsive writing drew clear battle lines and attracted a host of talent: a post-Pirates »
