The Joker, Sailor Moon and nerdy ladies were the big winners at the Her Universe Fashion Show last night. It’s an event where strutting down the runway were women wearing a Greek goddess-esque dress version of Groot, an elegant winter coat modeled after the Tardis, and a frock with a skirt shaped and detailed to look like the Death Star, among other high fashion takes on characters beloved by nerdy fans. In its second year at San Diego Comic-Con, the fashion show crowned two winners from the 25 finalists who submitted “geek couture” designs to Her Universe, the sci-fi fashion apparel company behind the event. The judging panel-selected winner was a design called “Joker’s New Look,” designed and modeled by Kelly Cercone. The attendee-voted top prize went to a “Sailor Moon” design called “Usagi’s Transformation,” which was designed by Leetal Platt and modeled by fan-favorite cosplayer Chloe Dykstra. »

"Star Wars Rebels" Recap & Review: "The Siege of Lothal"

22 June 2015 8:00 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Cartoons generally fall into one of two categories: those for kids and those more appropriate for older audiences. Every so often, something will come along that kids and parents (or just older fans) can enjoy together all on the same level. "Star Wars Rebels" fills that niche and is yet another reason that this is a great time to be a Star Wars fan. The first season of "Star Wars Rebels" had its growing pains, as all shows will in their first season, but by building on the storytelling success that was the hallmark of the later seasons of "Star Wars: The Clone Wars", it quickly found its groove. Merging the cobbled-together family dynamic of a show like "Firefly" and the larger Star Wars universe, it could tell stories set in a time period ripe for exploration. TV Review: ‘Star Wars Rebels: The Siege of Lothal’

18 June 2015 11:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Star Wars Rebels: The Siege of Lothal” launches the animated program’s second season heading into Comic-Con and in advance of the next eagerly awaited live-action chapter of the franchise, and brings with it a major event for a little Disney Xd series: Darth Vader, with James Earl Jones providing the Sith Lord’s voice. Once again hewing closely to the spirit and template of the original, the show continues to revel in the latitude afforded by animation to dole out bountiful helpings of action, garnished with considerable wit and a welcome sense of fun.

Taking place between the events of “Revenge of the Sith” and the movie since rechristened “A New Hope,” the series centers on a ragtag crew of rebels, whose number includes the Jedi knight Kanan (Freddie Prinze Jr.) and the hotheaded youngster he’s seeking to train, Ezra (Taylor Gray). Emily S. Whitten: Geek Chic Spring Shopping

28 April 2015 10:00 AM, PDT | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

Three years ago right around this time, I was lamenting the fact that there was a sad, sad lack of comics and genre fashion merchandise geared towards women. At the time, my experience was that the available clothing for women to purchase and wear was mostly t-shirts, only some of which were actually fitted for or geared towards women. And accessories of the sort women might be interested in, like jewelry or handbags or less manly wallets, were mostly available only via Etsy or through other fan enterprises.

Generally speaking, what was available via licensed merchandisers was also lacking in the style, flair, subtlety, or imagination that I’d have really liked to see in female comics fashion. Despite being a fan of the comfort of a cute tee shirt, there are times when I’d prefer to be able to let fly the flag of my geek pride with »

Fangirls, assemble! Fashion retailer Hot Topic and Marvel have teamed up to release an Avengers clothing line for women.

Produced by Her Universe and Disney Consumer Products, the range of dresses and jackets are inspired by Captain America, Black Widow, Iron Man, Thor and Loki.

The outfits were designed by Her Universe founder Ashley Eckstein and Amy Beth Christenson and Andrew MacLaine, competition winners from Comic-Con 2014's "Geek Couture" fashion show launched by Her and Hot Topic.

The Marvel range will be available from Hot Topic's website and select Us stores from May 12.

Marvel and Disney have recently found themselves under fire for a lack of female superhero merchandise. Research from The Telegraph found that of 60 items released earlier this month, just three featured Scarlett Johansson's assassin character.
