In the opening scenes of “Headshot,” a man sporting a shaved head and clad in the orange robes of a Buddhist monk enters a courtyard, turns toward a group of thugs, pulls a gun from a small bowl and fires at them. This superb fan poster by Rebecca Leigh for In the Mood for Love fills a void. I felt that there was never a really great poster for Wong Kar-wai’s masterpiece which was a crying shame since if ever a film both deserved and lent itself to an extraordinary graphic interpretation it was that one. The posters that do exist, like the American, French and Japanese designs below, all make do with Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung looking beautifully languid, utterly gorgeous and ineffably sad, and perhaps that’s all that one needs, but none of them do anything to quite match the soul and invention of Wong’s film.

Well, say what you will about M. Night Shyamalan, but his films -- even at their worst -- have always looked pretty damn good (the exception being the abysmal "The Last Airbender"). Shyamalan has always had a knank for picking great cinematographers to work with on his films including Tak Fujimoto ("The Happening," "Signs," "The Sixth Sense"), Roger Deakins ("The Village") and Eduardo Serra ("Unbreakable"). However, one of his most famous collaborations occured when he somehow managed to wrangle the cranky, Hollywood-hating, but exceptionally gifted Christopher Doyle for "The Lady In The Water." The longtime cinematographer for Wong Kar-Wai (though they haven't worked together since "In The Mood For Love") is known for capturing astonishingly beautiful and unexpected moments. The Newtown Flicks Film Festival hasput out its call for entries for the 2012 festival.
Festival director Martin Kelly said: “Newtown Flicks is launching its 6th season and the 2012 festival looks to be the best one yet.”
Judges for the festival include Genevieve Lemon, Garry Maddox, Bruce Beresford and Ada Nicodemou. Dates for the festival have not yet been announced.
Filmmakers will receive 20% of all income from collections.
Design agency Interbrand have created the trailer and artwork for the festival Chris Doyle, design director said: “Our work for Newtown Flicks is more than a labour of love. It’s so satisfying to be able to produce, edit and deliver a piece of film that is not only cost effective, but also celebrates what is at the heart of the festival itself — the growth and encouragement of young independent film makers in Australia.”
