Julia Sweeney was a force of comedy during her years on “Saturday Night Live” from 1990 to 1994, where she created memorable characters, including the androgynous “Pat” (no one could tell if she was a man or woman). She moved on into one-woman shows,

Scream Factory Unleashes Loads of Deadite Fun When Epic 3-Disc Collector’s Edition of Army Of Darkness Arrives This October!

The Evil Dead series is one that I hold very close to my heart (and my knuckles, which are tattooed with just that: Evil Dead). My adoration towards Sam Raimi’s 1981 directorial debut and the series that followed is unparalleled by most series, and I don’t know many horror fans who aren’t absolutely drawn to Bruce Campbell’s Ash character. With each film, the tone slowly changed from a straight up terrifying mood with the first film, to a “splat-stick” somewhat Three Stooges horror approach in Evil Dead 2, to full on action adventure horror with 1992’s third entry into the franchise, Army Of Darkness. A definite fan favorite, Army Of Darkness saw Campbell’s Ash character transported to the Medieval era and fully made the character a legendary one.

By now, we’ve seen countless releases of the film, and though some have said that there isn

Tribeca 2015. Searching and Drifting

  • MUBI
Aferim! This year, Tribeca moved back home, swapping out the East Village’s AMC Loew’s 7 for the venue they once used, the nearly invisible Regal Battery Park Stadium 11 as one of the festival’s main theater locations. Whether it is coincidence or just one of the festival’s grand themes, the finest films I saw were about movement. Characters search high and low for someone or something. While carrying strange cargo, they journey to the West, to the East, wherever, going from point A to point B. If not travelling, then characters are stuck, stranded, or even trapped in a spot, but desiring to move, move, move. There’s a whole lotta riding and talking going on in Radu Jude’s Aferim! Shot on black-and-white film (Kodak Double-x), the film is set in 1855 Wallachia, a time in which the Romani people had subhuman status, being slaves to landowning Boyars,

Crowdfunding Friday: guerrilla sci-fi filmmaking and more

  • Den of Geek
Feature Ryan Lambie 11 Apr 2014 - 06:26

This week's Crowdfunding Friday includes a sci-fi film secretly shot in Beijing and starring dissident artist Al Weiwei...

At the time of writing, there are just six days to go before Julian Gollop's Kickstarter campaign for Chaos Reborn comes to a close. In case you missed it, we covered the game in more detail a few weeks ago; based on the 80s Zx Spectrum game Chaos, it's both a revival and comprehensive expansion on that tactical fantasy classic.

We've had a chance to play with the prototype multiplayer bit of Chaos Reborn, and while it's still being polished, it's every bit the engrossing battle of wits an necromancy we were hoping. Each bout is short, sharp and tense, with the screen quickly filling up with goo, fire and fantastical monsters as each wizard casts their spells - Chaos was and is an appropriate

My favourite film: In the Mood for Love

Peter Walker continues our writers' favourite film series with Wong Kar-Wai's melancholy tale of love and loneliness

Did this review get you in the mood? Write your own reflections here or whisper them in the comments below

In the Mood for Love was released when I was living in Hong Kong, albeit a very different city to that of the film's 1962 setting. Like Tony Leung's Chow Mo-wan, I was also working there as a journalist. Sadly, that's where my resemblance to his almost absurdly handsome, mournfully dapper character begins and ends.

My tenuous geographical connection to Wong Kar-Wai's 2000 masterpiece is, ultimately, a bit immaterial. Unlike many contributors to this series, my favourite film doesn't reflect something particular in my own life. On the contrary, In the Mood for Love's glory is its universality. A seemingly slight plot – man and woman move into the same cramped apartment building,

Nyaff 2011. Lineup

  • MUBI
The New York Asian Film Festival has announced that its tenth anniversary edition will open on July 1 with the North American premiere of Yoshimasa Ishibashi's Milocrorze: A Love Story ("one solid slab of psychedelia," promises the festival; image above) and close on July 14 with the New York premiere of Na Hong-Jin's The Yellow Sea (aka The Murderer), which has just screened at Cannes in Un Certain Regard (see the roundup).

There'll be two Centerpiece Presentations, Benny Chan's Shaolin, with Andy Lau, Nic Tse and Jackie Chan, and Takashi Miike's Ninja Kids!!! — which, you may remember Danny Kasman caught in Cannes, and got quite a nice kick out of it, too. The festival will also be screening Miike's "director's cut" of 13 Assassins.

There'll be three special focuses. First off...

Wu Xia: Hong Kong's Flying Swordsmen

Tsui Hark's Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame

The 2011 New York Asian Film Festival Lineup

The 2011 New York Asian Film Festival Lineup
The Tribeca Film Festival has the stars. The New York Film Festival has the award winners. But the New York Asian Film Festival has the coolest, boldest, and strangest genre movies, and that's why it holds a special place in my heart. While most festivals specialize in quote-unquote arthouse fare, Nyaff brings the Asian mainstream -- the stuff that would almost never play here otherwise -- to America.

We're big fans of the Nyaff at IFC and we're looking forward to another excellent edition this year. The lineup was just announced and it looks stacked. It includes a few superb films I saw at last year's Fantastic Fest, including the entertaining exploitation documentary "Machete Maidens Unleashed" from "Not Quite Hollywood" director Mark Hartley. The stuff I'm jazzed to see for the first time includes the world premiere of Takashi Miike's "Ninja Kids!!!" (their exclamation points, not mine), "Ocean Heaven,
