Daughter of former Saskatchewan Premier Tommy Douglas, who was the founder of Canada's Medicare.
Protested a Summit of the Americas meeting in Windsor, Ontario in June 2000.
Organized a meeting concerning possible private health care, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada with actress Sarah Polley, and band members from The Tragically Hip.
October 2003 she was presented the Order of Canada.
Spring 2004 she received her own star on Canada's Walk of Fame in Toronto, Ontario.
Grandmother of Sarah Sutherland.
She was awarded the O.C. (Officer of the Order of Canada) on October 10, 2002 for her services to the performing arts in Canada.

Was involved with the Friends of the Black Panthers; a fund raising organization. In 1969 she was arrested for conspiracy to possess explosives. She had attempted to buy hand grenades for the Black Panthers. She spent five days in jail for the hand grenade incident and was subsequently denied a work permit and was forced to return to Canada.
