Mati Diop’s documentary Dahomey, about artefacts being returned from Paris to present-day Benin, was awarded the Golden Bear for best film at the Berlin International Film Festival tonight (February 24).
The film, handled internationally by Les Film du Losange, is the second from the African continent to take the Berlinale’s top prize after Mark Dornford-May’s musical U-Carmen eKhayelitsha in 2005. It is also the second year in a row that a documentary has clinched the Golden Bear, following Nicolas Philibert’s On The Adamant last year.

Dahomey, a documentary from French-Senegalese filmmaker Mati Diop, has won the Golden Bear for best film at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival.
The multifaceted docu-fictional essay explores the return, in November 2021, of plundered royal treasures of the African Kingdom of Dahomey from Paris to the present-day Republic of Benin, examining the complicated response of those in Benin, whose culture has developed for more than a century without these artifacts.
While taking the stage to accept her award, Diop made a direct political statement, calling out, “I stand with Palestine!”
Jury president, the Oscar-winning 12 Years a Slave and Black Panther actor Lupita Nyong’o, announced the Golden Bear winner from the stage of the Berlinale Palast Saturday night. Nyong’o is the first Black and first African to chair the Berlinale jury.

★★★★☆ Mark Dornford-May won Berlin's Golden Bear in 2005 for U-Carmen, his adaptation of Bizet's opera. He obviously hopes for similar success with his latest venture, Breathe Umphefumlo (2015), which transports Puccini's opera La Boheme from 19th century Paris to a modern-day township in South Africa. Lungelo (Mhlekazi Mosiea) meets Mimi (Busisiwe Ngejane) at university. She's a botany student while he's an aspiring poet and studying to be a journalist. They meet on campus in mid-summer. The students are engaged in preparations for the public holiday commemorating the 16 June massacre of Soweto schoolchildren in 1976. A concert is planned and singer Zoleka (Pauline Malefane) is due to appear.

Exclusive: Partners behind Breathe Umphefumlo reteaming on new slate of films.
The partners behind Berlinale Special world premiere Breathe Umphefumlo – Cape Town, South Africa-based Isango Ensemble, Advantage Entertainment, and the UK’s Film & Music Entertainment (F&Me) – are reteaming on a slate of new films starting with an adaptation of John Gay’s The Beggar’s Opera to shoot in Cape Town in August.
Isango will transport Gay’s 1728 satire/morality play to the jazzy underworld of 1950s Cape Town. Mark Dornford-May, who won the Golden Bear with U-Carmen eKhayelitsha, is again directing.
Dornford-May said, “The Beggar’s Opera is a savagely funny satire on money, morals and marriage — as relevant and biting today as it was when first written. Setting the film in post war colonial Cape Town will give it a visual style and a music flair that will inform the original – and take it further.”

Fortissimo Films has acquired worldwide rights outside South Africa to Mark Dornford-May’s Breathe Umphefumlo, which will premiere Out Of Competition at the upcoming Berlin film festival.
The film transports Giacomo Puccini’s opera La Boheme to contemporary South Africa and includes songs in Xhosa, one of the official languages of South Africa.
Dornford-May previously directed U-Carmen, which gave the same treatment to Bizet’s Carmen and won Berlin’s Golden Bear in 2005.
Produced by South Africa’s Advantage Entertainment and Isango Ensemble and the UK’s Film and Music Entertainment (F&Me), the film is written by Dornford-May and Pauline Malefane with musical direction by Mandisi Dyantyis.
The story follows a group of artists, writers and actors struggling to survive in the township of Khayelitsha, which has high rates of tuberculosis, in common with 19th Century Paris, the original setting of La Boheme.

The sales company will handle world rights on the film which is based on Pathé’s French hit What’s In A Name?. It tells the story of extrovert Paolo and the beautiful Simona who are expecting a child. Part of the Contemporary World Cinema slate at Tiff this year, director Mark Dornford-May’s Noye’s Fludde is a fascinating record of the exciting performance and dramatic art going on today. Based on English composer Benjamin Britton’s 1957 operatic retelling of the classic flood story from the bible, Dunford-May and the Cape Town theatre company Isango Ensemble create a story that’s cinematically compelling, but also imbued with all the energy and immediacy of live performance. This version of the classic biblical tale is set in present-day South Africa, though there is still a timelessness to the costuming and art direction that could place the action at any time. Here, Noah...

Exclusive: Unitel Group’s Unitel Classica label has boarded world sales for Unogumbe-Noye’s Fludde.
Mark Dornford May’s film will have its world premiere at Toronto next month.
It is Dornford May’s latest operatic collaboration with the Khayelitsha Township, South Africa-based Isango ensemble, which he previously worked with on Berlinale winner uCarmen eKhayeilitsa. The piece is adapted from Benjamin Briten’s Noye’s Fludde.
“Unogumbe follows the original opera plot closely but moves the action from medieval England to a present-day South Africa where the background and poverty of the township is a striking metaphor for man’s inhumanity to man,” say Mark Dornford-May. “Unogumbe is sung in Xhosa, with subtitles in medieval English and completely rescored for African instruments.”

BERLIN -- The 55th Berlin International Film Festival ended -- literally -- on a high note. The closing evening saw opera singer Pauline Malefane, the star of the Berlin's Golden Bear winner U-Carmen eKayelitsha, hold up the golden statuette and belt out an impromptu aria in her native Xhosa language. That Berlin's jury, headed by director Roland Emmerich, picked Mark Dornford-May's ambitious opera adaptation for the Festival's top honor came as a complete surprise to critics and handicappers at this year's event. In fact, Hany Abu-Assad's controversial Paradise Now, which tracks the final 48 hours in the lives of two Palestinian suicide bombers, was so heavily tipped to win that one major German wire service erroneously announced early Saturday that Paradise Now had taken the top prize. But in retrospect, it is easy to see the appeal of U-Carmen eKayelitsha. Set in South Africa's poor Kayelitsha township, the film combines fast-paced editing and camera tricks with a story and score based on Georges Bizet's classic Carmen, adapted and sung entirely in Xhosa.

The ambitious musical, which is performed entirely in the local Xhosa language, flew under the radar of both film critics and industry execs at this year's Berlin Festival. But it won over the jury. Marc Rothemund's Sophie Scholl -- The Last Days was another big winner at Berlin, taking two Silver Bears for best directing and best actress for German up-and-comer Julia Jentsch as the Munich resistance fighter Sophie Scholl, who was executed by the Nazis in 1943.
