Chicago – Very few pieces of fiction have had the proven staying power of Charles Dickens’ “Great Expectations,” which gets yet another adaptation in a two-week mini-series Masterpiece version, starting this Sunday, April 1st, 2012, on PBS. The mini-series has some flaws (mostly in the performance of its protagonist) but it proves again why this incredible tale has survived so many interpretations and is worth seeing for some striking production design choices, the strength of its incredible source material, and strong supporting performances, including a very memorable turn from Gillian Anderson.
TV Rating: 4.0/5.0
Do teenagers still read “Great Expectations” in high school? I hope so. It’s a fantastic book that has lost none of its thematic power. The story of a young orphan who has his life turned upside down by an encounter with an escaped convict and the interest of a wealthy widow looking for a friend for her lonely daughter has timeless lessons. »

Daniel Radcliffe, The Woman in Black In The Woman in Black, Daniel Radcliffe may not have a megablockbuster on the scale of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (or even the more modest Deathly Hallows: Part 1); even so, the period horror thriller starring Radcliffe in his very first post-Harry Potter role may well top the North American box office this Superbowl weekend. According to early, rough estimates found at Deadline.com, CBS Films' The Woman in Black may reach close to $20 million by Sunday evening after grosses of approximately $8.1 million at 2,855 theaters on Friday. The Woman in Black has a 68% approval rating among Rotten Tomatoes' top critics, with a 5.9 average. Those are hardly "wide acclaim" figures. Even so, the combination of the Radcliffe and a mysterious ghost have been luring the curious into movie theaters. Directed by James Watkins, The Woman in Black also features Janet McTeer (a »

In honor of CBS Films' upcoming release of The Woman in Black in Us theaters tomorrow, February 3rd, Dread Central recently had the opportunity to chat with two producers on the latest out of the Hammer horror stable, Simon Oakes and Nigel Sinclair.
Both Oakes and Sinclair were integral to the relaunch of Hammer Films in 2010. In 2007 Oakes (Vice-Chairman of Exclusive Media Group) and Marc Schipper (Exclusive Media COO) led the acquisition and recapitalization of Hammer, and Oakes now serves as its President and CEO. Sinclair, the Co-Chairman and CEO of Exclusive Media, came on board Hammer as a non-executive director in 2007 after his other production studio, Spitfire, locked in a first-look development and production pact with the newly revived British horror studio at the same time.
During our interview with Sinclair and Oakes, Dread chatted with the pair about Hammer's legacy of horror, their thoughts on The Woman in Black »

As the frost of winter puts a chills our spines, The Woman in Black aims to do the same. Based on Susan Hill’s 1983 novel, this is the second ghostly retelling produced this time by the legendary Hammer Film Productions—the same production house that brought many of our beloved genre classics staring the greats: Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing.
Taking the lead role this time is Daniel Radcliffe of Harry Potter fame. Dread Central was allowed a candid glimpse into Radcliffe’s method, desire to direct; as well as his thoughts on being in his first horror film and what it took to exude the “darkness” he needed.
Heather Buckley: Tell me about The Woman In Black.
