Born in 1954, Arthur Dong has become famous for his documentaries Forbidden City, U.S.A. (1989), Sewing Woman (1983), Coming Out Under Fire (1994), Licensed to Kill (1997), and his latest film, Family Fundamentals (2002).
Dong's films have been awarded the Peabody Award, three Sundance Film Festival Awards, five Emmy nominations, and an Academy Award nomination, and have been shown on PBS, and at the Walker Art Center and at the Hawaii International Film Festival.
Dong is a graduate of the San Francisco State University film school and the AFI Center for Advanced Film and Television Studies. He is on the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, representing the newly-formed Documentary Branch.
