‘CSI’ Finale: Creator Anthony Zuiker on Emotional Endings, Origins and Longevity

It’s one of TV’s great rags-to-riches stories: Young guy from Las Vegas delivers a global smash hit with his first-ever TV script.

Anthony Zuiker, 47, was not so far removed from his job driving a tram for a Sin City hotel when he managed to field the pilot for “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” for Jerry Bruckheimer TV and CBS in 2000. A well-arranged marriage of Zuiker with veteran showrunners Carol Mendelsohn and Ann Donahue set “CSI” off on a journey that would change the course of TV history and spawn three spinoffs, most recently the Patricia Arquette starrer “CSI: Cyber.”

With the mothership wrapping its 15-year run with a two-hour movie airing Sunday night, creator/exec producer Zuiker spoke with Variety about the emotional experience of writing the finale, reuniting with original “CSI” stars William Petersen and Marg Helgenberger and his deep appreciation for Mendelsohn, Donahue, CBS’ Nina Tassler, Leslie Moonves »

Actors, writers, producers and creators of CBS hit show “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” gathered Wednesday night for a panel to mark its series finale at the Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills. The Q&A concluded the 2015 PaleyFest Fall TV Previews.

Devoted fan and Entertainment Weekly writer Lynette Rice moderated the event and began with a question directed to creator Anthony E. Zuiker. Rice asked how he thought to redefine the television crime genre, singing the iconic theme song, “Who were you, who who who who?”

“I was watching a show called ‘The New Detectives’ on the Discovery Channel and saw a forensic docu-drama… about a cheerleader who was killed and they pulled a long blonde hair out of the headrest,” Zuiker started.

After a voice-over explained the cause of death from studying the strand, Zuiker said, “That’s when I learned that the body really is the perfect »

‘CSI’ to Wrap 15-Season Run in September with Two-Hour Finale

13 May 2015 6:24 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

CBS is saying goodbye to the show that turned the network’s fortunes around some 15 years ago. “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” will wrap its 15-season run in September with a two-hour finale that will reunite original stars William Petersen and Marg Helgenberger.

The finale will air Sept. 27 and feature other returning cast members who have been on the forensic procedural over its run. Ted Danson, the current “CSI” star, will relocate to the latest spinoff, “CSI: Cyber,” opposite Patricia Arquette.

“It’s easy to take it for granted,” said Kelly Kahl, CBS senior exec VP. “This is one of the strongest and longest-running dramas in TV history.” He noted its importance to CBS: “This was one of the shows that reversed our fortunes and put us in the right direction.”

“CSI” was a sleeper hit for the Eye in its debut in the fall of 2000. The show’s cinematic style »
