The Good Wife Review: The Death and Desire Zone

3 October 2011 4:48 AM, PDT | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

Based on events from "The Death Zone," is it a coincidence that an anagram for The Good Wife is "Weighed Foot."

Okay, probably. But the presence of both Eddie Izzard as opposing British council and an anagram-loving barrister - sorry, solicitor - on the team of Lockhart/Gardner made this an especially enjoyable Case of the Week. It didn't hurt that The Wire's John Doman was at his pompous, shady best, either.

The libel suit also gave us another glimpse at a newly confident Alicia, who made Will both proud and aroused when she took initiative during the deposition. There are clear problems with these two dating, but the chemistry between the characters is undeniable.

It's like Alicia said to Will on the season one finale: it's not a question of feelings, it's a question of practicality. As the hot scene inside Will's apartment last week proved, and as »

Netflix Gets Borgia Drama Series After All

28 September 2011 7:18 AM, PDT | Deadline TV | See recent Deadline TV news »

When Showtime renegotiated its deal with Netflix earlier this year, the network made its current original series unavailable to the online streaming service. “With all the options out there, we want to be sure people know they have to subscribe to see Dexter or The Borgias,” Showtime CEO Matt Blank said at the time. Well, there will be a Borgias series available on Netflix soon. The company has acquired North American rights to a rival, European-produced series about the medieval Italian dynasty. Titled Borgia, the $30 million drama, which already airs in European markets, hails from Homicide and Oz alum Tom Fontana, with John Doman starring and Atlantique Prods, Eos Entertainment, Canal Plus and Etic Film producing in association with Zdf and Orf. The Showtime Borgias series, from DreamWorks TV, was created by Neil Jordan and stars Jeremy Irons. Netflix is currently in pre-production on its first original series, the David Fincher »

Interview: ‘Blue Valentine’ Director Derek Cianfrance on Intensely Personal 12-Year Journey

14 May 2011 5:32 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – “Blue Valentine” director Derek Cianfrance is happily married now with two young children, but the road getting there was turbulent and sometimes still is. While that’s real life, romance films often end with the lucky guy getting the pretty girl and them living happily ever.

By contrast, “Blue Valentine” is often much more, well, blue. More important, it’s just genuinely real. The romantic drama feels somewhat like a fly-on-the-wall documentary (Cianfrance’s primary experience is in TV documentaries) even though it’s not billed or scripted that way. It understands the true dichotomy between our happy and heavy hearts. The film, which was released on Blu-ray and DVD on May 10, 2011, is one of the best movies of 2010 that didn’t win an Oscar.

New this Week: ‘Bridesmaids,’ ‘Priest’ and ‘Aliens (Bd)’

11 May 2011 6:00 AM, PDT | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

Hitting movie theaters this weekend:

BridesmaidsKristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne

PriestPaul Bettany, Cam Gigandet, Maggie Q

Movie of the Week

Priest

The Stars: Paul Bettany, Cam Gigandet, Maggie Q

The Plot: A priest (Bettany) disobeys church law in order to track down the vampires who kidnapped his niece.

The Buzz: I’ve got to be honest, I think this film looks horrible. It’s ‘Movie of the Week’ strictly as a path of least resistance. If I happen to have any regular readers out there, they’re certain to know that I’m not going anywhere near Bridesmaids, not even with a blindfold, and so Priest suddenly shines with promise — relatively speaking of course.

Priest continues director Scott Charles Stewart’s working affair with Paul Bettany (whom last teamed together on the unimpressive Legion). Bettany bugs me a bunch, anyone else? I’ve just never taken him well, »

Exclusive: Derek Cianfrance Talks The Place Beyond the Pines

9 May 2011 9:51 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Last week we reported that Blue Valentine director Derek Cianfrance is writing and directing a new project entitled The Place Beyond the Pines, which will reunite him with actor Ryan Gosling. I recently had the chance to speak with Derek Cianfrance about the May 10 release of Blue Valentine on Blu-ray and DVD, and he spoke a bit more about this new project. Here's what he had to say below.

"The next film I'm making is called The Place Beyond the Pines, which we'll shoot this summer. We're just locking up all our financing right now. It's a film about fathers and sons. It deals a lot with ancestry. Ryan Gosling is going to play a motorcycle stunt rider who comes back to the town of Schenectady to find out he has a young son from this one-night stand. He has to choose whether he's going to be a father, or »

Exclusive: Derek Cianfrance Talks Blue Valentine

9 May 2011 1:07 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Blue Valentine director Derek Cianfrance discusses this drama's long road to the big screen, his directorial style, new projects and more.

At the young age of 23, director Derek Cianfrance wrote, directed and edited his first feature, Brother Tied in 1998. 12 years later, after initial difficulties to secure funding, his follow-up Blue Valentine was released, although, due to the critical acclaim of his second film, we won't have to wait that long for his third. This fantastic drama stars Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams as a couple trying to save their marriage, as we also see how their relationship started through a series of well-placed flashbacks in this intricately-structured drama.

Blue Valentine will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on May 10, and I recently had the privilege of speaking with Derek Cianfrance to promote the home video release. Here's what he had to say below.

I really enjoyed the movie, so it's »

From Sex to Acting to Nc-17 Rating, "Blue Valentine" Director, Derek Cianfrance, Explains the Film!

13 January 2011 11:12 PM, PST | Manny the Movie Guy | See recent Manny the Movie Guy news »

Passionate and intense, words to describe Derek Cianfrance. Same words I would use to define "Blue Valentine," the fantastic new movie starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams about the degradation of love.

This movie will pierce your heart.

I love talking to directors of films, they're the authors of their projects, and Cianfrance gave a deeply insightful look into the world of romance, love, and acting!

Oh yeah, he mentioned that controversial Nc-17 rating the film initially received from the MPAA.

In this interview, we talked about:

*** His interest in making "Blue Valentine"

*** Why he chose Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams to star in the film

*** The controversial Nc-17 rating that the film initially received. How did he fight it?
