From Best To Worst: The Playlist's Complete Tribeca Film Festival Coverage

2 May 2012 12:38 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

That's it. It's a wrap. The Tribeca Film Festival is over for another 12 months. And while it was an improvement from years past, despite a promising line-up the festival proved to be somewhat disappointing: most of the best regarded films ("2 Days In New York," "Take This Waltz," Searching For Sugar Man" being three prime examples) had premiered elsewhere, while the more high-profile, star-laden of their world or North American exclusives landed with a thud.

However, even while the festival still grapples with its own identity, there were some real gems in the line-up: there are a few films that justify whatever else we had to sit through in the course of the last few weeks. And let's not forget the festival did secure "The Avengers" and "The Five-Year Engagement," two films we loved (though try and ask any civillian who got into either and you'll hear a lot of crickets). [Tribeca Review] Side By Side

24 April 2012 9:30 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

As someone who grew up knowing Keanu Reeves as one half of the dopey dude Bill and Ted duo – of Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and Bogus Journey - it was strange to imagine him attempting to tackle the ever-sprawling debate of photochemical film versus digital. But really, he’s the perfect guide for a journey through this complicated issue, both as the face of The Matrix, which questioned what is real and what is a construct of a computer, and as an actor whose had to adapt to the different workflow that digital demands. Plus, his infinitely-relaxed persona effortlessly sets each of his interviewees at ease, allowing for a frank and eye-opening conversation about the pros and cons of film and digital filmmaking.

In this incredibly comprehensive and thoughtful doc, Reeves sits down with a long line of heralded filmmakers, editors, cinematographers, colorists, special effects creators and actors to »

Nicole Kidman 4 Film Collection (Cold Mountain, Dogville, The Others, Rabbit Hole)

DVD Reviews

Cold Mountain (2003)

Directed by: Anthony Minghella

Cast: Nicole Kidman, Jude Law, Renée Zellweger

Running Time: 2 hrs 34 mins

Rating: R

Due Out: April 3, 2012

Plot: As the Civil War nears its end, a Confederate soldier (Law) makes the long journey home to reunite with the woman he loves (Kidman).

Who’S It For? Anyone who appreciates an old-fashioned romance, horrific depictions of war, or rich production values should find something to like about Cold Mountain. Though not ideal if you want a lightweight love story, it’s worth watching once.

Movie:

Cold Mountain is an occasionally great film, but the best word to describe it is “grueling.” Some of that feeling is appropriate, such as in the brutal opening war scene; unfortunately, more is due to it being overlong. While there are a handful of great moments, this isn »

Chris Hemsworth Spotted in Set Photos from Ron Howard’s Racing Drama Rush

8 March 2012 10:34 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Director Ron Howard is currently busy shooting his F1 racing drama Rush, and he’s been keeping fans quite involved in the filming process via his Twitter account. While he hasn’t shared any set photos featuring the actors yet, someone else recently managed to snap star Chris Hemsworth decked out in his racing gear. The film focuses on the 1970s rivalry between Austrian F1 driver Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl) and British driver James Hunt (Hemsworth). It’s a dramatic story filled with more than a few dangerous racing accidents, and producer Brian Oliver previously told Steve that cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle (Slumdog Millionaire) was working on some experimental camera mounts to capture the treacherously fast races. The Hemsworth set photos aren’t anything crazy, but we do get a good look at him in his racing getup. I’ve also included a few photos of Howard’s that give »
