'Toy Story 3' Writer Michael Arndt In Talks To Re-Write 'Catching Fire'

5 May 2012 9:41 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Lionsgate’s “Hunger Games” sequel “Catching Fire” is now packing some new heat. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Michael Arndt, who won an Oscar for his screenplay for “Little Miss Sunshine” and more recently wrote “Toy Story 3,” is being brought on board to polish the initial drafts that were written by “Slumdog Millionaire” and “127 Hours” writer Simon Beaufoy. “Catching Fire” is, of course, based on the second book in Suzanne Collins’ best-selling young adult series and will be the follow up to Gary Ross' runaway smash from earlier this year.

What’s interesting about this is it marks the first time, should the deal go ahead, that Arndt has worked outside of Disney since “Little Miss Sunshine” (which was released way back in 2006). While he’s been loosely attached to a number of projects (including Peter Hyams’ “Monster Squad” remake and a big screen version of “Sesame Street” for Warner Bros. »

‘Sin City’; ‘Mr. Toad’; ‘Muppets 2′; New Pixar films & ‘Battle Angel’ update

26 April 2012 12:17 PM, PDT | doorQ.com | See recent doorQ.com news »

Dimension Films has announced that deals have been made and casting is underway on a sequel to Sin City –the film on which director Robert Rodriguez exited the DGA because they would not let creator Frank Miller share directorial credit.

Since Disney has had a huge success in turning their Pirates of the Caribbean ride into four movies (and counting), they’ve decided to adapt Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride -one their longest-running attractions-  into a live action/CGI feature film. By the way, elements of Kenneth Grahame’s 1908 classic children’s book The Wind in the Willows have been adapted before by Disney, in particular the 1949 film The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad. And the ride is one of the few attractions that are still running at park since it opened in 1955. Pete Candeland, a commercial and video helmer, has been hired to direct, but the project is still seeking a writer. »

Pixar announces release dates, details for three new movie projects

25 April 2012 8:01 PM, PDT | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

Right now the nation's theater owners have assembled in Las Vegas for CinemaCon, the event where movie studios hype up their upcoming fares in the effort to whet the appetite (and open the checkbook) of the industry-goers. Studios are flying in talent, both actors as well as key personnel and suits, to present sizzle reels for movies coming out in 2012 and beyond.

At the Disney presentation Pixar's upcoming 2013 and Tba slate took everyone's attention. First up was the reveal of a new Pixar movie project to be directed by Toy Story 3 helmer Lee Unkrich set in the world of the Mexican holiday of Dia de Los Muertos, or translated, "Day of the Dead". This is the annual early November holiday observed in Mexico where the living pause and give remembrance to their loved ones that have passed on. Food, sweets and treats are presented to the spirits so they can »

Pixar Announces a New Film from Director Lee Unkrich About Dia de Los Muertos

In addition, the studio confirms a release date and new title for their Dinosaur movie, now titled The Good Dinosaur.  Also, they reveal a couple new details on their "Inside the Human Mind" thing from director Pete Doctor.  Read up on the latest for all three films after the jump.

First up, the new film.  We don't know much about it at this point, other than the fact that it will be directed by Toy Story 3 director Lee Unkrich and produced by Darla K. Anderson, also of Toy Story 3 fame (in addition to production roles on A Bug's Life and Monster's Inc).  Disney's press release goes on to call the project "a wholly original Pixar Animation Studios film that delves into the vibrant holiday of Dia de los Muertos."  Who knows when the project will hit, but I'm assuming Summer 2016 following the other films on Pixar's slate.  Only four years to go! »

Marvel, Pixar, Disney and DreamWorks Live-Action CinemaCon Recap; Includes First 30 Minutes of Brave, Wreck-it-ralph, Frankenweenie, More

When Disney took the stage for their CinemaCon 2012 presentation yesterday afternoon, they didn't mess around.  Loaded with footage, movie stars, filmmakers and information, the presentation was definitely aimed at letting exhibitors around the world know that the Disney umbrella (which now includes Pixar, Marvel, Walt Disney films, and distributing DreamWorks live-action films) is loaded with a lot of big properties and they have no intention of slowing down.  While some of the upcoming properties just had the stars and filmmakers talking about the movie (The Lone Ranger), others like Frankenweenie had Tim Burton on stage with Sean Bailey (President of Production at Disney) talking about why he wanted to make a stop-motion black and white movie, followed by the screening of a full scene. In addition to what I just mentioned, Kevin Fiege from Marvel talked about Iron Man 3, Captain America 2, Thor 2, and The Avengers.  Pixar's John Lasseter »

Pixar Officially Announces New Movies from Lee Unkrich, Pete Docter and Bob Peterson

25 April 2012 11:02 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

With Cars 2 finally giving Pixar their first critical failure last year, it has become painfully clear that the animation giant is no longer invincible. Fortunately, there is no reason to think that their future projects won't still be brilliant, and even though I'm not overly excited about Brave or the Monster Inc. sequel Monsters University, I remain confident that they will be solid flicks. But what will come after them? Up until 2010, there was a mysterious project called Newt in the works, but it ended up getting canceled -- possibly because it had a plot that was too similar to Rio. Now this week at CinemaCon, Disney has unveiled three new Pixar films aiming for release in 2014 and 2015. None of them are sequels, and they are about dinosaurs, the human mind, and Dia de los Muertos respectively. Disney sent out a press release this week with basic plot details, »

Pixar's Updated Film Slate and a Lazy 'Muppets 2' Poster

25 April 2012 10:30 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Let's begin with what is being called "early art" for The Muppets 2. While technically accurate, for an organization such as Disney to put such a small amount of effort into their product is a tad embarrassing. Really? All you could manage is the exact same logo as the first film with two Muppet fingers? Yeah, way to convince your audience you care. Moving along... Pixar has offered an update to their upcoming film slate beginning with what was previously known as director Bob Peterson's untitled film and targeted for a November 27, 2013 release, The Good Dinosaur will now open on May 30, 2014, which leaves Monsters University as the lone 2013 Pixar flick, hitting theaters on June 21, 2013. Not a lot is known about The Good Dinosaur outside of its pondering synopsis asking, What if the cataclysmic asteroid that forever changed life on Earth actually missed the planet completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct? »

New Pixar Slate: Pushed back a little from its planned November 2013 release date, the newly-christened The Good Dinosaur speculates on what might have happened if giant dinosaurs never became extinct. It's now due out May 30, 2014; Bob Peterson (Up) directs. The next film from Pete Docter (Monsters Inc., Up) will be out on June 19, 2015 (pushed back one year from May 2014), though its title is still up in the air; it promises to visit “the world inside the human mind.” Meanwhile, Pixar veteran Lee Unkrich (Toy Story 3) is working on a new project without a title or release date; all we know is that it’s “wholly original” and “delves into the vibrant holiday of Día de los Muertos,” the Latin American Day of the Dead.
