Warning: contains major plot spoilers for Top Boy’s final season.
We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Dushane and Sully’s reign over Summerhouse has officially come to an end, and there definitely won’t be any reboots this time.
The final season of Top Boy has arrived on Netflix, and while it’s bittersweet because it’s goodbye, the ending did not disappoint. As expected, the six-episode season was full of betrayal, guns and murder. Viewers saw the deaths of fan-favourite characters such as Kieron (Joshua Blisset), Lauryn (Saffron Hocking) and even top boys Dushane (Ashley Walters) and Sully (Kane Robinson).
This season also told the story of Stefan (Araloyin Oshunremi), who fought with the decision to get revenge on Sully for killing Jamie (Michael Ward), and of Jaq (Jasmine Jobson) who struggled with the guilt of dealing drugs.
But as the series ends for good,...

Writer-director Fridtjof Ryder makes an impressive debut with Inland, which had its world premiere at the BFI London Film Festival this evening. The German-English filmmaker – who also produces – has delivered an atmospheric meditation on family, loss, nature and the environment, with terrific turns from Mark Rylance and newcomer Rory Alexander.
In the credits, the latter’s character is known as The Man, and the contemporary story pays tribute to the ancient Green Man legend. Set in Gloucester, UK, on the outskirts of the Forest of Dean, it sees him returning home after time in a facility. His mother has gone missing, and his father figure, mechanic Dunleavy (Rylance), welcomes him back with a gentle jokey greeting: “You Silly Billy.” It’s a telling phrase that sets the tone of an affectionate relationship and a character who falls back on humor when the conversation is in danger of getting serious.

Barbadian British author Malorie Blackman’s popular and critically acclaimed “Noughts + Crosses” series, which uses the setting of a fictional dystopia to explore racism in the present day, is coming to NBCUniversal’s recently launched streaming service, Peacock. The timely and thought-provoking six-episode drama, which is set to launch Friday, September 4, follows the love story of two star-crossed young adults who are divided by their skin color, in an alternate universe where the racial power structure is turned on its head.
In this world, Africa — or “Aprica” as it’s referred to in the novel — invaded Europe centuries ago, enslaving its people. In present-day London (known as “Albion”), slavery is an institution of the past, but Jim Crow-esque segregation laws maintain the power dynamic: A ruling class of Black “Crosses” control the country’s politics, wealth, and culture over an oppressed, impoverished underclass of white “Noughts,” who are at the brink of revolt.

Billie Piper’s Rose Tyler still has one of the most memorable exits from Doctor Who in the show’s history, with that final scene with her and the Tenth Doctor on a beach being an emotional high point for the series. Since that moment, Piper has popped up for small cameos as well as appearing in Big Finish audio dramas alongside David Tennant. Now, Big Finish have announced that Rose is returning for her own series – Rose Tyler: The Dimension Cannon – and she’s bringing her family with her.
The Dimension Cannon was first mentioned in the 2008 episode “Journey’s End,” in which Rose explained how her parallel universe Torchwood team had created a device allowing her to leap between worlds. There is perhaps no more beloved children’s book or character than Winnie the Pooh. For nearly a century now, kids have been delighted by this bear. As such, there’s an avenue for a biopic about author A.A. Milne and the origins of this story. Opening on Friday, Goodbye Christopher Robin seeks to transform Milne’s tale into something that will touch audiences of all ages. Unfortunately, this is a pretty standard issue biopic, without any thing to really set it apart. Awards prospects are slim, but more on that later. Pooh fans might see it as a curiosity, but this writer mostly just views it as a disappointment. The film is, as mentioned above, a biopic of writer A.A. Milne (Domhnall Gleeson), the man who created Winnie the Pooh. Struggling after seeing the horrors of World War I, A.A., or Alan, finds peace by creating a world with his son C.

[Nb: With the film now – finally – available to buy in the UK (The Forgotten is out today from Metrodome), here’s a repost of my review of the film from the 2014 London Frightfest]
There has been, over the past few years, a growing trend in British horror for setting movies in abandoned housing estates and tower blocks. Joining the growing ranks is The Forgotten, which sees a father and son forced to squat in an empty London council estate scheduled for demolition, seemingly abandoned by the mother. A dark, creepy and foreboding place, the flat is no place for a family; even less so after 14 year old Tommy starts to hear strange noises coming from the boarded-up flat next door…

PBS Masterpiece Breathless
On 24 August PBS Masterpiece will debut a new British TV show — Breathless. The 60s era medical drama has been variously described as Britain’s answer to Mad Men or ITV’s response to The Hour. Based purely on ratings, the comparisons were off the mark as the show was cancelled after it’s first season in the UK. Nevertheless, PBS hope the show’s all-star cast will entice a healthy audience. Leading the way is Jack Davenport (Swingtown) who plays Otto Powell, a high flying surgeon who performs illegal abortions when he’s off-the-clock. Shaun Dingwall (Doctor Who) is his work place frenemy Dr Charlie Enderbury. Joanna Page (The Syndicate) plays Dingwall’s love interest. The series has been formatted into three, two-hour long episodes that will wrap up on Sunday 7 September.

If horror movies have taught us anything, it's that killers can never actually be killed with attempts to end their lives only making them more pissed off. Serving as further proof of that fact is the upcoming UK thriller Scar Tissue, which has been given both a release date and a teaser trailer. Dig it!
Scar Tissue has been dated for UK theatrical release on July 25th, followed by a DVD/VOD roll-out on August 4th. At the present time no Us release has been announced.
Written and directed by Scott Michell, the film stars Danny Horn, Charity Wakefield, Kenneth Colley, Daniel Fraser, Helen George, Mark Cameron, Imogen Bain, and Shaun Dingwall.

Read the previous part in this series: the film careers of Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant, here.
By 2009, the new version of Doctor Who had become not only an integral part of Saturday night television and a huge Christmas ratings winner but also an international success all over again. David Tennant, who had played the Time Lord since 2005 and was, arguably, more popular than any Doctor since the mighty Tom Baker hung up his scarf in 1981, had announced his resignation from the part he loved in October 2008. Many wondered how the incoming showrunner, Steven Moffat, would follow Tennant and what kind of show would emerge.
Tennant spent much of 2009 on stage in Hamlet and was only able to devote small amounts of time to Doctor Who. Occasional specials...

Curtain Poirot’s Last Case
All good things must come to an end, even Poirot – well the David Suchet version anyway. Rather fittingly, ITV rolled out the big guns for Suchet’s last dance and the cast were a veritable Who’s Who of British TV. Anne Reid (Last Tango in Halifax), Philip Glenister (Life on Mars), Helen Baxendale (Friends) and Shaun Dingwall (Breathless) were just some of the A-listers who came to pay homage to Britain’s favorite Belgian. Also on hand was Poirot’s old chum, Hastings (Hugh Fraser). The duo have been through plenty of trials and tribulations over the years but as the end drew near for the frail looking Poirot, Hastings was asked to be his “eye and ears” on one last detective quest.
The setting for Poirot’s Last Case was a familiar one, Styles House where the duo first met no less than 30 years ago.

Pete Tyler
Portrayed by: Shaun Dingwall
Doctor(s): Ninth Doctor, Tenth Doctor
Story: 3 stories (4 episodes): “Father’s Day” (May, 2005), “Rise of the Cybermen”/“The Age of Steel” (May, 2006), “Doomsday” (July, 2006)
Background: Pete is one of only a handful of characters on Doctor Who that audiences meet in separate dimensions, including Companions Liz Shaw, the Brig, Mickey Smith, and ally Jackie Tyler (though we only meet her doppelganger very briefly). First introduced as Rose’s father who’d died when she was a baby, a bit of a dreamer and get-rich-quick schemer who, though his heart was in the right place, wasn’t the best husband, the Pete we spend more time with is an incarnation from an Alternate Dimension, affectionately called “Pete’s World” by the Doctor. This version found success with one of his early schemes and is a well-respected, incredibly wealthy executive and inventor. In this timeline,...

★★★☆☆ Equestrian artist Alfred Munnings' love affair and disastrous marriage to aspiring painter Florence Carter-Wood is the subject of Christopher Menaul's involving costume drama Summer in February (2013). It's 1912 and Munnings (Dominic Cooper) is a prominent member of the bohemian Lamorna Group, a colony of artists living and practising their craft in Cornwall. Fleeing London, an oppressive father and an unwanted suitor, Florence (Emily Browning) joins her brother here. Her fragile beauty and sensitive nature consequently attract the attention of local land agent and army officer Gilbert Evans (Dan Stevens).
A prolific painter, Munnings is much admired by others in the colony, including acclaimed artists, Laura (Hattie Morahan) and Harold Knight (Shaun Dingwall). Munnings can have any woman he desires but is also drawn to Florence. She models for him and before long he is proposing marriage. Florence accepts but the couple discover, too late, that their hasty courtship obscures a multitude of differences.

Following the success of one-off Victorian drama The Suspicions of Mr Whicher, aka The Murder at Road Hill House, shown on British television in 2011, a follow up was commissioned. Again it stars Paddy Considine as the title character and again it’s based on a book by Kate Summerscale, but unlike the infamous story of Constance Kent, The Murder in Angel Lane is entirely fictitious. Angel Lane is set several years after the 1860 case that ruined Jack Whicher’s career in the Police force. Whicher is now working as an occasional private detective and living in modest, if not squalid conditions. He is a different character now, a paranoid, broken man, disheveled and ignored.
Lucinda Wright thankfully returns as costume designer having done such a spectacular job first time around (read our original interview Here). The tone and palette is murkier, with London itself the primary backdrop rather than the rural South West.

There’s a great short starring Martin Freeman making the rounds this week, and I recommend watching that two-year-old film, titled The Girl is Mime, when you get the chance. But there’s another short led by the actor that I’d like to showcase this weekend in anticipation of The Hobbit. Way back in 1998, before Freeman was in Sherlock or The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy or Love Actually or even his breakthrough, the original UK version of The Office, he had two small yet notable gigs. One was appearing alongside Doctor Who‘s Shaun Dingwall in Vito Rocco’s music video for Faith No More’s cover of “I Started a Joke.” The other was starring in the 11-minute black and white film I Just Want to Kiss You. Written and directed by Jamie Thraves, best known for music videos he’s helmed for Blur, Radiohead and Coldplay, this...

The last time we reported on a casting story featuring Dominic Cooper, he passed on the film (Motor City) shortly afterwards, thanks to a scheduling clash. So the producers of action thriller Dead Man Down will be hoping he actually signs on. Dead Man Down finds original Girl With The Dragon Tattoo director Niels Arden Oplev reuniting with his star, Noomi Rapace and adding Colin Farrell for a tale of revenge and death.Farrell will be a grieving husband and father infiltrating the crime syndicate responsible for his family’s death, who also deals with Rapace's mysterious, scarred, beautiful woman who knows a lot about his past. Assuming he signs, Cooper will play Darcy, a family man who helps Farrell on the street. With prolific producer Neal Moritz aboard and a script by The Mexican’s Jh Wyman, Oplev is set to kick off shooting next month.Cooper will crop...
