Among the famous cases Dietl worked on, he investigated and brought to custody the two young males involved in the assault and rape of a nun in Spanish Harlem. Rumours said that Dietl closed the case with the collaboration of mobsters belonging to the Cosa Nostra, with whom he remained close.
The plot in Abel Ferrara's crime drama Bad Lieutenant (1992) is mainly inspired by Dietl's investigation of the rape of a young nun. Dietl even had a part in the movie as one of the investigating detectives.
Was one of the most decorated officer in the history of New York City Police Department. He even attained the highest arrest record during a ten-year period.
