Cannes rolls out the carpet for a bumper 65th year

19 May 2012 4:12 PM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

A vintage Cannes offers a whale of a drama, a Chinese mystery, and a dainty slice of dysfunctional family life from Wes Anderson. Meanwhile, Woody Allen and Roman Polanski have some explaining to do

Like the Godfather of film festivals that it is, Cannes keeps its friends close and its enemies closer. Over the 65th edition's early days, Cannes clawed back any deserters or doubters with a storming selection, confirming it as the best showcase for challenging cinema from around the world.

Andrea Arnold, the British director whose career Cannes nurtured by promoting her films Red Road and Fish Tank, showed her version of Wuthering Heights at Venice last year. Cannes immediately installed her as a member of this year's jury.

Regulars such as Woody Allen and Roman Polanski, neither of whom have a film showing here, have instead been rewarded with warmly respectful documentaries, made and populated by high-profile friends and fans. »

Review: Rust & Bone by Jacques Audiard, Cannes 2012 competition

17 May 2012 11:18 PM, PDT | DearCinema.com | See recent DearCinema.com news »

Back for the third time in the competition at the Cannes Film Festival where he has already been awarded twice (Best Screenplay in 1996 with A Self-Made Hero and Grand Prize in 2009 for A Prophet ), Jacques Audiard has once again made a hit with his sixth feature film, Rust & Bone.

It’s a new masterly work in which the director manages to express his immense talent in two spheres with very complex alchemy, melodrama and social film noir, all this directed with cinematic science consumed and carried by two exceptional actors who find light in the heart of darkness: French star Marion Cotillard and actor revelation Matthias Schoenaerts.

Diving as usual into the great depths of a society that he observes frankly, Jacques Audiard this time orchestrates an astounding love story with echos of the Beauty and the Beast, striking the iron of his extremely well-mastered intensity on the friction point »

Will see all films with same attention and same respect: Nanni Moretti, Jury President, 65th Cannes Film Festival

16 May 2012 11:07 PM, PDT | DearCinema.com | See recent DearCinema.com news »

Nanni Moretti

On May 16 at the Cannes Film Festival, Jury president Nanni Moretti answered questions, accompanied by the eight members of his jury: Andrea Arnold, Emmanuelle Devos, Diane Kruger, Hiam Abbass, Ewan McGregor, Alexander Payne, Raoul Peck, and Jean-Paul Gautier.

How will you fulfill your role as president of the jury?

Nanni Moretti: In a very democratic way. I am one of nine, and only a sort of head of the class. What is important is to see all the films with the same attention and same respect. And to meet often so as not to forget films that we might have seen too many days before. We will meet every other day to talk about four films we have seen. But I don’t understand the jury press conference after the winners are announced, which didn’t exist a few years ago. Jurors were then supposed to maintain total discretion. »

Ewan McGregor Begins His Cannes Film Festival Judging Debut In Today's Twitter-Wood

16 May 2012 11:48 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Today marks the beginning of the 2012 Cannes Film Festival! As actors, directors and filmmakers head to France over the next two weeks, certain stars are already making their splash. For instance, Sacha Baron Cohen (in character as Admiral General Aladeen) hosted a press conference in Croisette, Cannes' famous promenade, to promote "Dictator." Immediately following he hoisted himself on a camel—albeit with a struggle—and rode away for some shopping. Of course he did.

What an honour to be amongst this group. Here we are doing our press conference. 1st movie tonight. Wes Anderson. twitter.com/mcgregor_ewan/…

Ewan McGregor (@mcgregor_ewan) May 16, 2012

Also in attendance is Ewan McGregor, who's acting as a judge on the Cannes jury alongside fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier, french actress Emmanuelle Devos and Diane Kruger among others. The festival opens with the Wes Anderson film, "Moonrise Kingdom."

Nanni Moretti

Known For: His political edge, as well as an omnipresence in Cannes, where he’s appeared 14 times, winning awards twice.

Best Work: He won the Palme d’Or in 2001 for The Son’s Room, though many regard 1994′s Dear Diary, which won an directing prize at Cannes, to be his best.

Little known fact: Organized an estimated 200,000 protesters in 2002 to a gathering in the square in front of Rome’s San Giovanni basilica to oppose legal reforms planned by the right-wing government of Silvio Berlusconi. He was quote during the protest as saying “The Italians who voted for Berlusconi were following a dream — and they woke up in a nightmare. »

Cannes jurors range from Ewan McGregor to Jean-Paul Gaultier

What do Hiam Abbass, Andrea Arnold, Emmanuelle Devos, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Diane Kruger, Ewan McGregor, Alexander Payne and Raoul Peck have in common? Okay, no prizes for this one -- you've already seen the headline. This year's Cannes Film Festival competition jury, who will serve under previously announced jury president Nanni Moretti, is a typically motley crew, sufficiently diverse to stump any pundits trying to handicap the Palme d'Or race in terms of what the people voting might be looking for. It's hard to imagine what cinematic common ground off-the-wall French fashion designer Gaultier might find with stern Haitian filmmaker and political »

Cannes 2012: festival jurors announced

25 April 2012 10:10 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Ewan McGregor and Andrea Arnold provide British presence on nine-strong panel tasked with selecting Palme d'Or winner

Shortly after declaring the lineup for its official selection, the Cannes film festival has announced the jury for its 2012 edition, whose job it will be to pick the winner of the Palme d'Or.

Joining Nanni Moretti, whose presidency of the jury was announced in January, will be four men and four women, with the usual mix of star glamour and serious-minded cinephilia.

Two of the jurors are British: actor Ewan McGregor and writer-director Andrea Arnold. The latter, particularly, owes much to Cannes' influence, as her first two films, Red Road and Fish Tank, both won the third place jury prize (in 2006 and 2009) after competing for the Palme d'Or.

France has supplied veteran actor Emmanuelle Devos, probably best known internationally for the 2001 thriller Read My Lips, and eccentric designer Jean-Paul Gaultier.
