Cannes, France -- A live outdoor television broadcast from the Cannes Film Festival was briefly interrupted Friday when what sounded like gunshots sent crew and spectators scurrying for cover.
Actors Christoph Waltz and Daniel Auteuil were among guests being interviewed on the Canal Plus program "Le Grand Journal" when what sounded like gunfire rang out.
Television footage showed Auteuil and Academy Award winner Waltz – a member of the Cannes festival jury – scrambling from the seaside stage with dozens of others as a voice said "there's someone shooting."
When transmission resumed minutes later, host Michel Denisot said the noise had been caused by blanks. There were no reports of injuries.
Photographs showed a man being wrestled to the ground by police near the stage beside Cannes' seafront promenade, the Croisette.
Local newspaper Nice-Matin reported that a man was detained by police with a starter's pistol, a pocket knife and a plastic grenade. »

Man fires shots from starting pistol during live TV interview with Christopher Waltz and French actor Daniel Auteuil
Actors ran for cover at the Cannes film festival on Friday after a man fired shots from a starting pistol during a live TV broadcast.
Oscar winner Christopher Waltz and French actor Daniel Auteuil were being interviewed by French TV station Canal+ on a beach-front set when two shots were heard.
"The bodyguards jumped over the barriers into the crowd and pulled him [the suspect] to the ground. The police arrived and told everyone to run because there was a grenade in his hand," one eyewitness told Reuters.
French authorities, who arrested the man at the scene, confirmed he was carrying a dummy grenade and a knife. A police source said: "It really appears to be a crazy guy."

Christoph Waltz and Daniel Auteuil were rushed off-stage after gunshot-like sounds were heard during an interview at the Cannes Film Festival today (May 17).
The two actors and Jury members were appearing on Canal Plus's Le Grand Journal programme when the noises were heard.
When the show came back on air, its host Michel Denisot said that the perpetrator had fired two blanks into the air and been apprehended with a fake grenade. He added that the individual was now in police custody.
No-one is thought to have been injured in the incident.
Earlier reports had claimed that the sounds were created by fireworks.
Yesterday (May 16), more than $1 million (£650,000) worth of jewellery was stolen at the festival.
Cannes opened this year with a screening of The Great Gatsby, while the second day's highlight was the world premiere of The Bling Ring.
