Warren Beatty's portrait of an American journalist who witnessed the October revolution in Russia in 1917 is everything a historian could want in a movie
Director: Warren Beatty
Entertainment grade: A–
History grade: A–
John Reed was an American journalist who witnessed the October revolution in Russia in 1917.
Sex
Earnest leftie Jack Reed (Warren Beatty) meets earnest leftie Louise Bryant (Diane Keaton) in Portland, Oregon, late in 1915. He impresses her with his thoughts on the profit motive in the first world war, somewhat anticipating Lenin's Imperialism: The Highest Stage of Capitalism, written a few months later. This was exactly the way to an earnest leftie's heart in the 1910s, and if only Reed had said something more specific about dialectical materialism it would probably have been pants off straight away. As it is, that takes them until the second date. "I'd like to see you with your pants off, Mr Reed, »

Hell's horses, that was a fun one, eh? Extreme spanking, torture, amputation, and the most alarming birth since American Horror Story made this week's Game of Thrones the leg-crosser of the season. Let's dig in!
The episode is of course preceded by my favorite letters in the Western alphabet: AC, Al, Gv, and N. Together, they spell H-a-p-p-y L-o-r-d-s D-a-y Y-a-l-l!
The opening credits let us know that we're going to be introduced to yet another new land - this one looks to be waaaaay out there. Like, Staten Island out there. It's called Qarth, which sounds like a home accounting software with a speech impediment.
Stark, raving mad (Richard Madden)
It's raining in Westeros (my haaaair is a meesssss...) and two Lannisterian soldiers are joking about in the dark about the fighting prowess of Lorax, the Knight of Flowers. One points out that he can't be that good of a swordsman, »

Last week’s most viewed commentaries!
Three titles hold over from last week, two new enter the battle. So let’s just get right to it. Same rules as last week; new releases don’t count.
Jack Hill on The Big Doll House
Jack Hill recalls the making of his mega-hit, the Roger Corman/Cirio Santiago jungle prison flick that started the avalanche of busty-broads-behind-bars pix that packed the drive-ins throughout the 70s.
Lloyd Kaufman on Tromeo and Juliet
The Bard gets Troma-tized. The story’s the same, but Troma adds all the toilet humor, explicit sex scenes and gratuitous gore that old Will thoughtlessly left out of his version.
Judy Geeson is a universe away from to Sir With Love as an astronaut abducted and inseminated by a yucky alien who causes her to start slaughtering and devouring her fellow crew members before giving birth to slimy muppet-like baby aliens. »

With Snow White: A Deadly Summer, master of schlock David DeCoteau, who seems to make at least a handful of films a year, has managed to capitalize on both the name being in the public domain and the two upcoming big-budget Snow White tales (Mirror, Mirror and Snow White & The Huntsman). Even the one with Julia Roberts has to be better than this one.
Without credits, Snow White: Ads runs a shade more than 75 minutes. To call those minutes excruciating is being way too kind. After 15 you’ll be wondering if it’s almost over, but that’s only if you sit down to watch it. Don’t.
This Snow White is a rich girl named Snow (Shanley Caswell) who is acting out because she doesn’t like her father’s (Eric Roberts, onscreen for a few minutes tops) new wife, Eve (The Brady Bunch TV show’s Maureen McCormick, »

Eric Roberts and Maureen McCormick? In the same motion picture? What did I do right with my life? Nevermind that “Snow White: A Deadly Summer” sounds like a movie that’s been reworked and retitled to coincide with all the other Snow White movies coming out this year — I’m just excited that Marsha Brady and Eric Roberts are finally in a film together. Sure, they probably don’t have huge parts to play, but beggars cannot be choosers. I’ll take what I can get. Check out the film’s official synopsis: In this edgy tale of horror, a troubled teenage girl finds herself in a web of lies and deceit when her stepmother attempts to murder her by sending her to a discipline camp. Lionsgate bows veteran director David DeCoteau’s “Snow White: A Deadly Summer” on March 20th, 2012. The trailer for this no-budget thriller resides below »

It’s been a while since we mentioned Dtv director David DeCoteau Snow White flick, Snow White: A Deadly Summer, which stars Shanley Caswell, Maureen McCormick and Eric Roberts. But now, thanks to Dread Central (and a helpful YouTuber) here’s a clip from the film featuring former Brady Bunch star Maureen McCormick in mad-cap action:
Devastated by her father’s remarriage, Snow (Shanley Caswell) begins to act out towards her new stepmother (Maureen McCormick). Given an ultimatum by his new wife, Snow’s father (Eric Roberts) sends his daughter off to a summer camp, unaware of its dark past. Snow soon learns that the camp was the site of a murder several years ago, and that the suspect fled into the woods, never to be seen again. Not long into her deadly summer, campers begin dying off and Snow feels as though a killer is watching her.

The only disc extra will be a stills gallery.

Saoirse Ronan (Hanna) is now a new New Snow White in a new New Snow White adaptation that isn't Mirror Mirror or Snow White and the Huntsman.
This time it's called Order of Seven and involves Kung Fu and is set in Hong Kong in the 19th century! Ronan plays British gal Olivia Sinclair, and she somehow becomes involved with some crusty old warriors (seven of them) who have become outlaws in a world that no longer values their skills. There's an evil empress, too, who they have to defeat.
Someone named Michael Gracey will be directing it this fall 2012.
Now, I ask you, (A) isn't putting poor Ronan in action flick after action flick kinda typecasting her (she's in the upcoming fantasy-action film Justin and the Knights of Valour and stars in the Stephanie Meyer fantasy action project The Host as well as the girl-who-is-forced-to-kick-ass-fighting in How I Live Now (I mean, »

If you got past the Puppet Master X part and are still reading, I'll weave you a tale of Nazis, my child...
Iron Sky is going to be the best movie ever made, by anyone, and that includes Citizen Kane.
Why? Because it is about Nazis. Any movie about Nazis that isn't Just about the Holocaust is an awesome, unforgettable enjoyment.
Iron Sky is a sci-fi/comedy directed by Timo Vuorensola and is due to come out in April 2012 in the United States. They say "theatrically" but... I mean, that's debatable. They might just be renting a theater for one night. Or who knows? Maybe this'll be one of those Paranormal Activity things and it ends up in your local $15-a-ticket Arclight scamhouse? In any case, it's screening at Berlinale (that's a fancy European film festival) in November 2012, so chances are reviews will be flying from that point.

Not related to the upcoming fable feature 'Snow White and the Huntsman', starring Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron, is David DeCoteau's modern spin 'Snow White: A Deadly Summer'. As previously reported this baby will be skipping out of a theatrical release and flowing directly to DVD. Lionsgate Home Entertainment will be unleashing it into homes from 20 March. Hottie Shanley Caswell ('Detention') plays the little apple biter and is joined by Eric Roberts ('The Dark Knight') and Maureen McCormick. Sadly the DVD bonus features are a little on the light side and only features a simple stills gallery. »

March 20th is the first day of spring. What better day to release a movie called Snow White: A Deadly Summmer? Yep, there’s yet another Snow White movie. That brings the tally to two upcoming theatrical Snow White movies and now two direct-to-dvd Snow White flicks, and that’s in addition to Snow White being an integral character on ABC’s “Once Upon a Time”. Fairest-of-them-all Mania is sweeping Hollywood.
