Film Review: Legacy Matters in ‘Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom’

25 December 2013 6:43 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – The memory of South Africa freedom fighter Nelson Mandela, who passed away on December 5th, is filled with deserved accolades and iconography. Director Justin Chadwick and actor Idris Elba brings the man to human life in the essential “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.”

Rating: 4.0/5.0

This is the story that seemed lost in the overindulgent focus on the death of Mandela, but not the life. He was a radical and a freedom fighter, and fought a virulent and jack-booted white power base. He was thrown into prison for 27 years, and sacrificed his life, family and freedom for the cause he believed in. Focusing on that in the media after Mandela’s demise was impossible, they wanted the grandfatherly man who lived to the ripe old age of 95. “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom” reinstates the rabble rouser, the intellect and the social theorist who affected the 20th Century as much as any other man. »

Interview: Director Justin Chadwick of ‘Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom’

24 December 2013 1:39 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – When South African freedom fighter Nelson Mandela died on December 5th, there was a sense in the media that yes, he was a “great man,” but how he affected social change seemed lost in platitudes. Director Justin Chadwick fills in those gaps in his film adaptation of “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.”

Chadwick, and Mandela’s daughters, were at the London premiere of the film when they got the word that the great man had passed. There was speculation with the production company and distributor that the film release might be rescheduled. As Chadwick describes below, it was the children of Nelson Mandela that insisted that the film debut should go on, because of the stellar portrayal of Mandela – by actor Idris Elba – and the precise storytelling of his life by Justin Chadwick.

Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom Trailer

18 July 2013 7:25 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Thursday, July 18 was Nelson Mandela’s 95th birthday, and though he’s recently suffered a serious health scare, the former president of South Africa is still with us. It also seems the right day for the Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom trailer, which features Idris Elba playing him. Promising to unspool the story of the man behind the leader we know today, Walk delves into his radical activist past, his frustration with the way South Africa was governed, the crippling apartheid and his own desire to simply see his children live in freedom.Elba has a tough job here – Nelson Mandela is one of the most recognisable figures in the world, and while much of the film appears to take place at a time when the wider world wasn’t awash in news coverage about the man as in his later years, audience preconceptions are inevitable and will need overcoming. »

Film Review: ‘Vehicle 19’

13 June 2013 1:24 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The venerable “from hell” movie subgenre (e.g., nanny from hell, secretary from hell) picks up an unlikely addition — the rental car from hell — in “Vehicle 19,” a South African-made B-grade quickie looking to cash in on a time-tested combination of elements: Paul Walker and mass automotive mayhem. Neither particularly fast nor furious, this mostly preposterous high-concept clunker (which feels padded even at barely 80 minutes sans credits) makes a pit stop in a handful of North American theaters this week en route to a July 23 homevid debut.

Vehicle 19” turns on the modest novelty that, once Walker’s Michael Woods enters the titular Hertz minivan in the pic’s opening scene, he never leaves. Nor does director Mukunda Michael Dewil’s camera, making this something like the “Cosmopolis” of car-chase movies, though Dewil (a veteran commercials helmer) proves less adept than David Cronenberg at continually reinventing his claustrophobic locale. DVD Review: 'Vehicle 19'

20 May 2013 12:34 AM, PDT | CineVue | See recent CineVue news »

★★☆☆☆ American actor Paul Walker has carved out a career that largely consists of driving cars and being both fast and furious. Playing firmly within type, Walker returns to screens this week in Mukunda Michael Dewil's Vehicle 19 (2013). Alongside an international cast including Naima McLean and Gys De Villiers, Walker plays Michael Woods, a reckless ex-con determined to change his life for the better in an attempt to save his relationship with an estranged girlfriend. Unfortunately, a mix-up at a Johannesburg car rental company leaves Michael stuck with the wrong car and distressed hostage Rachel (McLean) in the boot.

Michael quickly becomes embroiled in a hot pursuit when he is chased across Johannesburg by a dangerous, corrupt and powerful Detective Smith (De Villers). Unable to go to the police and having already broken parole, Michael not only has the hostage's life to save, but he must also save his own »

Vehicle 19 DVD Review

19 May 2013 12:33 PM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Director: Mukunda Michael Dewil

Starring: Paul WalkerNaima McLeanGys de Villiers

Certificate: 15

Running Time: 82 Minutes

Synopsis: A foreign traveler (Walker) unknowingly picks up a rental car that will tie him to a web of corrupt local police.

Special Features: Making Of, Trailer

Seeing Paul Walker behind the wheel of a car for yet another action ‘vehicle’ doesn’t come as a surprise when you consider his signature roles in the Fast & Furious franchise and films like Joyride (aka Road Kill). He’s obviously comfortable in cruise-control and has rarely tasted success outside the fast-paced genre. He’s always appeared as a likeable chap (I personally have a soft spot for his dark modern fairytale Running Scared) and can pretty much pull off those types of roles with his eyes closed without really flexing his acting chops. Something I’ve never seen him do since his small supporting role in Gary Ross’ loveable Pleasantville. »

Star Trek Into Darkness, Mud, A Hijacking: this week's new films

Star Trek Into Darkness | Mud | A Hijacking | The Reluctant Fundamentalist | Our Children | Deadfall | Vehicle 19 | Village At The End Of The World | Journey To Italy

Star Trek Into Darkness (12A)

(Jj Abrams, 2013, Us) Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg. 132 mins

Those cinemagoers won over by Abrams's first Star Trek movie (even if they can barely remember it now) won't be disappointed with this finely tuned follow-up, which deftly balances action crises, sci-fi repartee and the ongoing Kirk/Spock bromance, but adds enough surprises to keep things interesting, largely by way of Cumberbatch's shifty supervillain.

Mud (12A)

(Jeff Nichols, 2012, Us) Matthew McConaughey, Tye Sheridan, Reese Witherspoon. 130 mins

Another distinctive, beguiling southern parable from Nichols, this time tracking the friendship between two boys and the mysterious fugitive they find down by the river. It's like a mix of Stand By Me, Night Of The Hunter and Terrence Malick. »

I know what you’re thinking: “Oh great, another movie in which Paul Walker drives fast in a car!” But wait, whilst Vehicle 19 does see everyone’s second-favourite Fast & Furious franchise star get behind the wheel of a car, this film is a whole different kettle of fish for Mr. Walker… Yet another in the line of “one man, one location” movies that have followed the successful release of Buried, the film takes it’s tale on to the roads of Johannesburg as Walker finds himself in the middle of mystery, knowing exactly as much as the audience does – that he’s definitely in the wrong rental car!

Paul Walker Loves Those Cars In ‘Vehicle 19′ Trailer

26 March 2013 3:00 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder, Laurel and Hardy, Johnny Depp and Tim Burton, the cinematic world is filled with great double acts, and the best of all would have to be Paul Walker and cars. After surviving 4 out of 5 The Fast And The Furious movies, with another on the way, you’d think Walker would be sick of the four-wheeled metallic transportation devices. You’d be wrong.

Vehicle 19 sees Walker pick up a rental car. Unfortunately for him, it’s the wrong rental car and inside he finds a gun and a kidnapped woman. If things couldn’t get any worse he’s a stranger in a foreign land And the police are in on it. Looking as though Walker never actually leaves the car, this could be both a claustrophobic chiller and a fast and angry (Ha! I didn’t say furious) action romp.

First Trailer for Paul Walker’s Latest Actioner Vehicle 19

2 January 2013 10:35 PM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Vehicle 19″ is one of those “contained thrillers” — that is, its big gimmick is that we, the audience, only knows/sees what the main character knows/sees at any given time during the film. You know the drill — Ryan Reynolds in a coffin, Stephen Dorff in the trunk of a car, and now, Paul Walker behind the wheel of a rental vehicle. It’s apparently set inside and around the car (though it seems to take some liberties in this regard) following Walker’s character as he tries to get himself out of a major jam involving guys with guns and a girl stuffed into his back seat. Good luck there, fella. Here’s the first trailer for “Vehicle 19″, from writer/director Mukunda Michael Dewil.
