Box Office: ‘Lego Batman’ Tops as Matt Damon’s ‘Great Wall,’ ‘Cure for Wellness’ Flop

20 February 2017 7:49 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Two mysterious billionaires, one of the toy variety, the other with a penchant for sex games, triumphed at the box office over a trio of new film releases during a muted Presidents Day Weekend.

Once again, “The Lego Batman Movie” loomed large at the multiplexes, picking up $42.5 million to take first place on the charts for the second consecutive weekend. The Warner Bros. release has now earned $107.1 million stateside. It focuses on a one-percenter who dons a bat costume in order to rescue Gotham City from the Joker.

Universal’s “Fifty Shades Darker,” a look at the bedroom habits of a titan of industry, came in second, picking up $24 million at 3,714 sites. The erotic drama has helped bring Bdsm into the mainstream, while earning roughly $92 million. That’s a solid result, although it trails its predecessor, “Fifty Shades of Grey,” which had made $131 million at a similar point in its run. »

Lego Batman Wins Weekend #2 at the Box Office with $34.2M

19 February 2017 11:16 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

After easily conquering highly-anticipated sequels Fifty Shades Darker and John Wick 2, Warner Bros.' animated spin-off Lego Batman Movie faced three newcomers in its second weekend at the box office. The animated spin-off will go up against Universal's big budget action epic The Great Wall, starring Matt Damon, Warner Bros.' comedy Fist Fight starring Ice Cube and Charlie Day and 20th Century Fox's A Cure For Wellness starring Dane DeHaan. As expected, The Lego Batman Movie retained its spot atop the box office with a better than expected $34.2 million

While there are certainly many factors that lead to The Lego Batman Movie staying on top of the box office, one of these factors is that it is still playing in hundreds of more theaters than any of these newcomers. The Lego Batman Movie debuted in 4,088 theaters last weekend, which, according to Box Office Mojo, remained unchanged this weekend. reporting »

Movie Review – Fist Fight (2017)

18 February 2017 1:00 AM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Fist Fight, 2017.

Directed by Richie Keen.

Starring Charlie Day, Ice Cube, Jillian Bell, Tracy Morgan, Dean Norris, Christina Hendricks, Kumail Nanjiani, Dennis Haysbert, JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Alexa Nisenson, Stephnie Weir, and Austin Zajur.

Synopsis:

When one school teacher gets the other fired, he is challenged to an after-school fight.

Fist Fight is exactly what it is billed as being, which is frankly some of the best information that could come out of a review for this over-the-top, outlandishly cartoony R-rated comedy. There actually is a knock em’ down, drag out fight between two wildly different high school teachers (Charlie Day is a lenient and meek pushover both as an English teacher and in life’s general confrontational situations, while Ice Cube is the scary, assertive, steely eyed history teacher that will chew out students with no remorse thanks to his hardened and weirdly explained out of place backstory). It’s »

Box Office: ‘Lego Batman’ to Tear Down ‘The Great Wall,’ Beat ‘Fist Fight’

17 February 2017 3:21 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Holy, box office champ! “The Lego Batman Movie” is heading for a dominant $41 million at the North American box office this Presidents Day weekend, taking in more than the combined haul of three new entries, early estimates showed Friday.

Action-fantasy “The Great Wall” was heading for $18 million at 3,325 sites for the Friday-Monday period, while high school comedy “Fist Fight” looks likely to finish around $14 million at 3,185 locations. Meanwhile, horror-thriller “A Cure for Wellness” was scaring up a modest $5 million at 2,704 screens.

The second weekend of “Fifty Shades Darker” appeared likely to challenge “The Great Wall” for runner-up as the erotic sequel saw patronage plunge by about 67% from its opening weekend. The follow-up to “John Wick” may also contend for second with a projection of $16 million.

“Lego Batman,” Warner Bros.’ spinoff of 2014’s “The Lego Movie,” is playing at 4,088 sites and will wind up the weekend with more than $103 million in its first 11 days. »

Fist Fight has arrived in theaters today with Charlie Day and Ice Cube going toe-to-toe in the ultimate teacher fight.

The film is about two high school teachers prepared to solve their differences the hard way after school. On the last day of the year, a mild-mannered high school English teacher Andy Campbell (Day) is trying his best to keep it together amidst senior pranks, a dysfunctional administration and budget cuts that put jobs on the line. But things go from bad to worse when he accidentally crosses his much tougher and deeply feared colleague, Ron Stricklan (Ice Cube), who challenges Campbell to an old-fashioned throw down after school. News of the fight spreads like wildfire and ends up becoming the very thing this school, and Campbell, needed.

It also stars Tracy Morgan, Jillian Bell, Dean Norris, Christina Hendricks, Dennis Haysbert, Kumail Nanjiani and JoAnna Garcia Swisher. »

‘Fist Fight’ Review: Damn, It Feels Good To Be A Teacher [Not Really]

17 February 2017 12:59 PM, PST | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Teaching is a noble profession. Dedicated men and women devote their lives to educate our children in hopes that those children will one day grow up to make the world a better place. It is often a thankless job, and the rewards are few, but those dedicated few who push through believe in a better world, and know, deep in their hearts, that they are making a difference. The new movie Fist Fight shows us what happens when the exact opposite occurs. This film highlights the consequences of teacher shortages, poor pay, long hours, and an administration that just doesn't care. Did I mention this is a comedy?

Fist Fight stars Charlie Day and Ice Cube as two teachers in a Georgia high school during the annual Senior Prank day/last day of school. Andy Campbell (Day) is a dedicated father and husband, and an english teacher who tries to »

'Fist Fight' Review: Ice Cube Comedy Is One Big Swing and a Miss

Charlie Day owns one of the highest-pitched male squeaks in the business and he puts it to hilarious use on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. I could watch him in anything – but Fist Fight is pushing it, given that's it's always raining a storm of comic clichés that quickly drowns any semblance of audience goodwill.

Film Review: Report Card on ‘Fist Fight’ is a Failing Grade

17 February 2017 9:13 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – “Fist Fight” is such a thin premise it can’t even sustain its own two minute trailer, much less a feature length film. That premise, what there is of it, is simple – English teacher (Charlie Day) and History Teacher (Ice Cube) get involved in an altercation with a student on the last day of class, at a failing high school known for senior pranks.

Teacher Ice Cube gets fired, and blames Charlie Day. So they act like children and settle their differences with a fist fight outside.

Rating: 0.0/5.0

And that’s it. The entire running time is spent with Ice Cube glowering, and Charlie Day sputtering about trying to avoid the impending beatdown. There have been a lot of crappy studio comedies over the past few years, but this one stands out as something you can imagine even Adam Sandler turning down because of its shoddiness.

The film has no basis in reality, »
