Apart from some brief comments a few months back from Idris Elba about giant monsters, Guillermo del Toro's latest project Pacific Rim has been pretty much shrouded in secrecy. However, Warner Bros. has now given us a good idea of the story for the big budget sci-fi epic with the release of the following official synopsis...
From acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro comes Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ epic sci-fi action adventure Pacific Rim.
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. »

We’ve known the basic gist of Guillermo Del Toro’s upcoming robots vs. giant monsters film Pacific Rim since it was first announced last year, but now we can share the official synopsis – and it’s pretty wild stuff. Del Toro's latests is part mech-based anime series like Neon Genesis Evangelion, part Godzilla flick, with maybe a touch of Real Steel/Transformers thrown in for good measure. Can Del Toro pull this off? While we can’t answer that question, the signs would seem to indicate that the filmmaker is lining up all the right pieces to succeed. He’s got a solid cast led by Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba from The Wire, and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Charlie Day. He’s got a script...

With so many awesome summer movies headed our way in 2012, it's been a little hard to look to the future without getting lost in the shuffle. Guillermo del Toro has played it smart in keeping mostly quiet on his next project Pacific Rim. Principle photography has wrapped so that Charlie Day can get back to Paddy's Pub and Charlie Hunnam can jump back on his motorcycle, yet we've barely seen any spy pics, or heard any news from the principle cast about their experience.
Today, we get our first real sign that the movie actually exists. The official synopsis. If you had any doubts that this was nothing more than a giant monster movie ode to Godzilla and his ilk, you can squelch that noise right now.

"Pacific Rim" has so many of my favorite things. It's a Guillermo del Toro monster movie. It's a callback to Kaiju and anime culture. It stars actors from three of my all-time favorite shows: Charlie Hunnam of "Sons of Anarchy," Charlie Day of "Always Sunny," and Idris Elba of "The Wire" (bonus points for "Luther"). I do not need to know anything else to guarantee my attendance on opening day.
That said, I won't say no to reading the "Pacific Rim" plot synopsis, which only serves to sell the awesome-sounding movie even further. Check out the full synopsis and Legendary Pictures press release after the jump!

Guillermo del Toro's huge-monsters-versus-huge-robots-driven-by-humans picture Pacific Rim, set to launch July 2013 and star Charlie Day, Idris Elba, and Charlie Hunnam, now has a more specific plot description. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge." There was no doubt about it: This was Kristen Wiig's night. Of the three cast members rumored to be leaving "Saturday Night Live," I think we can go ahead and remove the word "rumored" off of Wiig and Samberg, who said his goodbye with "Lazy Sunday 2." Jason Sudeikis, on the other hand ... well, he introduced the Foo Fighters? In other words: There were really no hints throughout a show that he had very little to do with concerning his future (unless you want to read into Jagger mentioning that "many of you are moving on" in the final sketch). So if it was his last show, that's a shame. On to what turned out to be a quite emotional final Scorecard of the season...
Sketch of the Night
"She's a Rainbow" (Mick Jagger, Kristen Wiig, Ensemble) A perfect ten. Honestly, that was the most touching, emotional sendoff that I've ever seen "SNL" pull off. »

The last time Will Ferrell hosted "Saturday Night Live," the show (and that season) ended with an epic sing-along of Bill Joel's "Goodnight Saigon." Last night's offering did not have that same monumental feel to it -- even though there were guest appearances by Will Forte, Ana Gasteyer, Liam Neeson, Justin Bieber, Michael Bolton, Natalie Portman, Jon Hamm and Justin Timberlake. There were so many guest stars, it felt, at times, like the actual cast had been swept under the rug. Heck, at times, it felt like Ferrell himself was put on the back burner. Since I can't think of a third metaphor for "set aside," let's just move along to this season's penultimate Scorecard.

Peyton Manning hosted "Saturday Night Live" in 2007 and he was excellent. This was surprising. Athletes are usually not very good at hosting sketch comedy shows. (Apparently, when growing up, between those long summer two-a-days, athletes aren't trained on the finer points of hosting "SNL," you know, just in case.) But, Peyton Manning, for whatever reason, was terrific. This weekend, it was his brother Eli's turn, who can't just pass on his sibling's grades because life doesn't work like the movie "License to Drive." How was Eli? Alas, Eli wasn't as good as Peyton, but he certainly wasn't terrible. Let's go with the word "serviceable" for Manning -- a word that's a bit too strong when describing the overall quality of this week's show. (Also: I'm quite surprised that "Battleship" actor Rihanna didn't wind up in a sketch along the way.) Let's get to the Scorecard, shall we?
