Israeli Oscar Entry ‘Baba Joon’ Features Iranian Actors, Farsi Language
As the U.S. and Israel continued their spat over a looming nuclear deal with Iran, a tiny Israeli film bowed at Toronto to an audience packed with proud Iranian expats. “Baba Joon,” the freshman feature from Israeli helmer Yuval Delshad, made its world premiere in Tiff’s Contemporary World Cinema section, and in doing so made a little bit of history — the pic is the first-ever Israeli film in Farsi, and one of only a handful on record to feature dozens of Iranian actors.

Navid Negahban, the Iranian-born, L.A.-based actor best known to American audiences as terrorist mastermind Abu Nazir in “Homeland,” stars.

Delshad, whose own parents were born in Iran and belongs to the 200,000-some strong population of Iranian Jews in Israel, penned the semi-autobiographical script. The supporting cast includes Iranian-born actors David Diaan and Viss Elliot Safavi as well as several Iranian-Israeli non-pros.

TheWrap Screening Series: ‘Baba Joon’ Filmmakers on ‘Lyrical’ Father-Son Journey
Movies about father-son dynamics tend to transcend language — but what about when the father and son in question don’t speak in the same tongue? That was one of the impressive feats of “Baba Joon,” Israel’s Oscar entry for Best Foreign Language Film, director Yuval Delshad revealed at TheWrap’s Screening Series on Monday. Moderating the affair at Los Angeles’ iPic Theater, TheWrap founder and editor-in-chief Sharon Waxman welcomed Delshad and cast members Navid Negahban (“Homeland”), Viss Elliot Safavi and David Diaan for a panel following the film. First Look: Trailer and Poster for Ophir Winner and Israeli Oscar Submission 'Baba Joon'

First Look: Trailer and Poster for Ophir Winner and Israeli Oscar Submission 'Baba Joon'
"Baba Joon," winner of five Ophir Awards from the Israeli Academy of Film and Television and Israel's 2016 Oscar submission, stars Navid Negahban ("Homeland") as Yitzhak, an Iranian immigrant in Israel who hopes his teenage son, Moti (Asher Avrahami), will take an interest in the family turkey farm. When Moti refuses, preferring instead to fix up junked cars, the ensuing conflict exposes the generation gap, as a son's demands for independence come up against his father's determination to honor tradition. The film is directed by Yuval Delshad and costars David Diaan ("The Stoning of Soraya M.") as Moti's uncle, Darius. The poster, following the film's appearance in Toronto, offers a glimpse of Ofer Inov's Ophir Award-winning cinematography, with a striking image of Yitzhak and Moti, eyes downcast, amid a sea of turkeys—and the trailer features a similar sense of inter-generational drama. "I want to do what I love," Moti tells his father.

‘Baba Joon’ a predictable coming-of-age story in an exotic setting

Baba Joon

Written by Yuval Delshad

Directed by Yuval Delshad

Israel, 2015

This year’s edition of the Haifa International Film Festival has a strong Iranian inflection, highlighting a Mohsen Makhmalbaf retrospective and Yuval Delshad’s Baba Joon, the first Farsi-language Israeli feature film. Baba Joon premiered internationally at this year’s Tiff and is Israel’s submission to the Academy Awards foreign language category. Yuval Delshad’s feature debut stars Homeland’s Navid Naghaban as Yitzhak and British actress Viss Elliot Safavi as Sarah, an Iranian-born turkey farming couple in an early 1980’s agricultural settlement somewhere in the Negev desert of Southern Israel, and newcomer Asher Avrahami as Moti, their only child.

The crux of the drama is a time-worn premise of inter-generational conflict and changing times – thirteen-year-old Moti’s distaste for turkey farming goes against his father’s and grandfather’s ambitions of continuing the family business. In fact,

Film Review: ‘Baba Joon’

Film Review: ‘Baba Joon’
In this period of greater nuclear tensions between Israel and Iran, who would have guessed that Israel’s foreign-language Oscar submission would be mostly in Farsi? “Baba Joon” is a coming-of-age drama from debuting feature writer-director Yuval Delshad set in a Persian-immigrant moshav in the Negev during the early 1980s. Although some may find it a tad too sentimental and under-nuanced, the film depicts the ways of a community infrequently seen on Israeli screens. More universally, it provides a metaphor for the struggle between the migrant generation, which is holding on to the past and traditions from another country, and the sabra generation born into a new identity and seeking out a fresh path. Expect generous fest and niche arthouse play offshore.

Three generations of the stubborn Morgian family struggle to manage a ramshackle turkey farm in an isolated desert community of Farsi-speakers. There’s the aging grandfather (Rafael Faraj

3 Actors From The Interview on the Movie’s Cancellation
If you thought you were disappointed about Sony yanking the release of The Interview, just imagine being one of the film's actors — and then imagine being one of the movie’s actors who isn't Seth Rogen or James Franco, who have the benefit of 24-hour security. The Interview's main cast seems to have been placed under a cone of silence following Sony's announcement on Wednesday. So we called up three of the supporting players — Tommy Chang, David Diaan, and Thomas Cadrot — to see how they're coping. What were your roles in the movie?Chang: I play one of Kim Jong-un’s bodyguards. In the original script, I’m in it from the get-go — with the president throughout every scene that he’s in. They edited me out in the vast majority of the film, but at the end, I actually get killed by Kim Jong-un for telling him the

‘Homeland’ Actor Stars in Israeli Indie Feature

‘Homeland’ Actor Stars in Israeli Indie Feature
Navid Negahban’s most famous alter ago, “Homeland” terrorist mastermind Abu Nazir, was certainly no fan of Israel. But Negahban, whose quiet, almost sympathetic performance of the jihadist shot him to fame in 2011, fell in love with the Jewish state while filming “Homeland” in Tel Aviv, so much so that when he was offered the lead role in an Israeli helmer’s low-budget debut, he jumped at the chance to return.

Baba Joon,” the first feature from newcomer Yuval Delshad, above with Negahban,is a coming-of-age story set in an immigrant-heavy Israeli farming village. Negahban plays Yitzhak, a turkey farmer struggling to pass his Iranian traditions onto his precocious Israeli-born son. Delshad, himself the child of Iranian immigrants, penned the semi-autobiographical script, which features mostly Farsi dialogue and offers a window into Israel’s oft-forgotten population of Iranian Jews.
